On tap at the brewpub in Eureka. Sampled immediately after the regular Downtown Brown.

Pour is dark amber-brown. Excellent head and sticky lacing. Clear. Better, creamier head somehow.

Aroma: medium malts with a good hint of chocolate and a strong dose of natural raspberry.

Flavor: Raspberry is a bit overdone, and lingers on even in the aftertaste where it seems less natural.

Feel: medium bodied with soft, medium carbonation level. Smooth.

O: good chocolate raspberry beer, but there;s nothing subtle about the raspberry.

Serving type: on-tap

I tried this beer again a few years after the first taste. I was a bit disappointed yet not surprised.
The appearance was not all that impressive- the dark liquid smells just like cherry coke to me. The stuff even tasted like cherry coke. Hints of cherry and berries.
Not a fan of flavored beers.
Overall not too impressive. I would't recommend this to many people, if I were to then it would be to a woman.

22 oz. bottle poured into a nonic pint.

A- Clean, dark brown body. 1-finger, tan head that drops to a thin film quit quickly. Not a ton of stick.

S- Tons of raspberry that seems natural and fresh, both tart and sweet. Dark bread comes through later.

T- Raspberry up front with a solid, bready malt through the middle. Something of a dark, whole wheat toast.

M- kind of thin, verging on watery. A little light on the carbonation.

O- It's definitely a raspberry ale. It reminds me of the beers I cut my teeth on in college (Olde Peninsula Raspberry Wheat). It does pull off the fruit flavor, staying very drinkable. I won't have a problem putting back the 22. Something I could share with my wife.

Here's one of those brews that caught my eye due to the oddity of the combination; Raspberry!? Brown Ale!? What manner of chicanery is this!? Well it is Lost Coast Brewery and Cafe's Raspberry Brown, of course!

Poured from a 650ml bottle into a nonic pint.

A: Raspberry Brown presents well with a perfect clear mahogany body and a light dusting of an off-white head on top.

S: Fresh picked raspberries upfront with a hint of a nutty hop and toasted malt base. The raspberry smell is fantastic, like they were picked from a field yesterday.

T: The flavour is as fresh as the aroma, of course the raspberries dominate the taste, but there are noted characters of the aforementioned nutty hops and that toasted malt base adding a slight sweetness. It's a got a hit of cocoa as well. Then as you drink it the flavour starts to taste more and more like raspberry cordial, that first sip is deceptive, not good.

M: Mid to light bodied with some ever present wateriness and medium carbonation. It feels a bit unhinged here as well.

D: This brew begins like quite a pleasant chap, then somewhere halfway through the bottle it becomes a bit twisted and maleficent... some sort of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde kind of brew then. I actually had a bit of difficulty finishing the whole bottle and overall I was disappointed by what started out so promising and finished so *blerrrk*. Avoid this beer.

Food match: If you really have to drink this then I would recommend desserts such as; cakes, tarts, etc. The sweetness that morphs from natural fructose into cough drops becomes too distracting for a savoury dish.
