Very dark copper pour with a moderately sized tan head that slowly fades.
Aroma consists of mil chocolate, roasted malt, sultanas and just a hint of vanilla (it merges with the chocolate).
Loads of chocolate grain evident upon tasting: lots of nutty and toasty note with a hint of roasted grain but little of the roasty bitterness. Some light chocolate is apparent.
Good medium body, I would have liked it to be richer/creamier.

Brew from BobbyHeenan. Cheers!

From a bottle into a snifter
Brewed with Dutch cocoa and vanilla beans

APPEARANCE: Clear brown pour produces a one finger, loose, crackly, cream colored head with lousy retention. Head quickly fizzes down to nothing really. Looks flat rather quickly. Clear dark brown body with no carbonation. Finishes flat.

SMELL: Dark malts, chocolate malt, light vanilla and caramel on the nose. Cocoa and sweet creamy as well. Bold enough.

TASTE: Quite empty really. Not much up front at all. Light cocoa perhaps but that's reaching perhaps. Some light chocolate, burnt malts and a touch of sweet cream lingers after the swallow. Slightly metallic finish isn't all that enjoyable. A plastic, metallic flavor accompanied by stale chocolate lingers and lingers long after the swallow.

PALATE: Thinner body and higher levels of carbonation. Bubbly on the palate, goes down airy and finishes slightly sticky. Too light and bubbly, unfortunately.

OVERALL: Not my cup of tea. The look was rather lousy, while the metallic, plastic, artificial and stale chocolate didn't really do it for me either. The thin and bubbly body didn't help the situation either. Thanks again for the box Bobby. They can't all be winners.

Bottle: quality solid brown 330mL bottle, typically funky Holgate label - I like it.

Appearance: the body is quite thick, very dark brown leading to black. A very thin tan head hangs about for quite a time. Nice.

Aroma: heavy cocoa, roast coffee and some sweet chocolate on the nose. A reasonably rich aroma for a porter, which is a nice change. There's some more light fruit over the top - grapes or cherry.

Taste: heavy chocolate up front, with heavy fruits backing up and a definite cocoa-and-coffee bitterness over the top. The only problem I can see is that the flavour is not very strong at all, if anything it seems too demure - a bit wishy-washy almost.

Aftertaste: that coffee bitterness hangs about, but not much else. Not a great aftertaste.

Mouth feel: quite solid and creamy in body with lower to moderate carbonation. Helps the beer slide down nicely.

Overall: not a bad beer at all - at least it's well made and has all the right flavours across the profile. It is very coffee though which is not my thing, and a little demure. Too expensive at full price - AU$110 a case of 24 (2013).

330ml bottle. Winter is here, it's cold, but not that cold, so, well, oh, what the hell...

This beer pours a clear, very dark amber cola hue, with two fingers of foamy, somewhat creamy beige head, which leaves a low ebbing wall of painted lace around the glass as it rather quickly sinks away.

It smells prominently of medium chocolate, edgy vanilla, some wavering nuttiness that is, and isn't, hazelnut, some almost unnoticed roasted caramel malt notes, and relatively mild fruity, earthy hops. The taste is decent powdered cocoa, blended with a more sedate vanilla bean essence, lightly toasted caramel malt, some quite understated fruity cherry notes, a taunting, weak sourness, and tame earthy, leafy hops.

The carbonation is fairly subdued, though hardly absent, the body an adequate medium weight, with caveats of thinning here and there, with a suitable lulling smoothness for the style. It finishes on the sweet side, the cocoa, now astringent vanilla, and slightly weird fruitiness facing little in terms of opposition.

An enjoyable enough brew, though I'm not getting much to qualify this as American in style, and what I do get for the London side is just a bit too ethereal in which to place belief. Whatever, this Aussie offering is doing well enough all on its own - though I do wonder what they would consider 'winter' conditions over there...

Bottle from Beer Deluxe. Hope this goes better than tap.

A - Pours black with a two finger khaki head. Good carbonation coming up. Spotty lace and a film of retention.

S - A bit of roast with a good amount of chocolate.

T - Roasty, burnt toast, dark chocolate is mild and some coffee. Not nearly as much chocolate as you'd expect. It's there but not so strong.

M - Good carbonation, medium body and a mildly chocolatey finish.

O/D - I don't buy into this beer's hype at all. Whatever chocolate they want to come out here clearly isn't working for them. Not bad, but certainly what you'd expect.

On tap at the Local Taphouse St Kilda - Feb 2012

Pours a very dark brown with a very enticing, creamy-chocolate head.

Straight up I get the prominent coffee and dark(bitter) chocolate notes. Dark malt is king in this wiff. I don't get any of the advertised vanilla. There is a dark fruit hint as the beer warms - prunes/raisin.

Initial taste is not promising, Hops take an expected back seat in this beer, leaving the bitterness to do its thing in a restrained way - though it does linger in the aftertaste. Possibly too much on the IBUs in this take. As it warms, it almost becomes too much.

Coffee and chocolate notes are back in the taste but extremely restrained. All of the above smacked with a shovel by the absolute thinness in mouthfeel! The more I drink the more I am distracted by the extremely thin, almost watery quality about the beer. By the last mouthful, there is bare minimum flavour and plenty of lip smacking to clear the palate.

Overall, not a fan of this particular beer. Whether it was a conscious decision to create a thin beer, I won't know. But it seems they went out intending to create a lucious chocolate porter, and a dark-malt flavoured light beer came out the other end. Disappointing considering the ABV.

330ml bottle poured into a leffe glass

Pours a very dark amber brown with almost no head that disappears quickly.

Bam! Chocolate. Milky, nutty, sweet chocolate. Theres some nice yeasty aromas in there aswell.

On the palate this beer is pretty simple. Chocolate, and lots of it. There's a dry gritty dark roasted chocolate, a sweet milky chocolate, and strong notes of vanilla.

The mouthfeel is a little thin, although I'm starting to see I generally think this about most beers - perhaps it's my problem.

Overall this is a nice porter, and probably one of Australia's best.

A - Thin, tan head receding to a collar almost instantly. Very dark brown, almost black in the body.

S - As advertised, chocolate at the forefront. Backed by coffee and treacle.

T - Powdered dark chocolate, coffee, caramel and vanilla.

M - Moderate body and carbonation.

O - A nice, after dinner beverage with or for dessert.

Bottle into a snifter.

A-Deep black/brown with a 1cm tan head.

S-Chocolate, sweet chocolate, a bit of molasses, and brown sugar.

Taste-Wow, sweet to bittersweet chocolate through the whole mouth. Finishing with a light bitterness that seems more from the roasted malt than any kind of hop bitter.

M-Smooth, a bit more carbonation would have been nice--this would be amazing on nitro, probably close to Left Hand's Milk Stout.

O-Great beer, wonderful taste, but not a fake chocolate. Would definitely buy this again.
