April 12th, 2016 - I took these notes in 2016, but am now reviewing the pandemic, like an ill omen. This beer tried to warn me about 2020 but I wouldn't listen. I did perceive the deep lovely raisin and fig flavors though, with the pepper and beef jerky overtones. The flavor is even better, with lots of dark chocolate, some spice and vanilla. The body is a little thinner than I would like, but the complexity of the flavor compensates.

A-almost black in color with dark brown highlights, has a dark tan head that disappears almost immediately
S-smell is of chocolate and dark roasted coffee
T-chocolate, coffee, caramel, dark fruits, and a bit of roast
M-medium body but pretty flat
Overall the beer starts out promising but the lack of carbonation is pretty disappointing

Bottle:
Pour almost like oil, black. Deep tan head that lasts a little while, but fades to almost nothing. Early look is pretty nice, but the end result is fairly disappointing.
Smell is burnt toast or dark grain toast, and a little hint of spice: licorice or sasparilla perhaps. Not too complex, decent strength.
Taste seems to follow the profile of a Baltic porter to me, which would seem to fit into "imperial porter." The taste has a sweetness to it atop a muted dark toast note, almost overwhelming it. Beer is fairly flat in feel, yielding a little flat root beer flavor. Little slick in nature, the lingering flavor is a light lingering of that toast.
The feel really kills this beer for my overall enjoyment. The other components aren't bad, if straightforward and perhaps style blurring. Just is missing the tingle of carbonation to liven up the beer.

This beer is almost firing on all cylinders, except for a flat appearance, pouring out like an oil slick. Slick, slippery body, aroma carries some wine like essences, along with some molasses and soy sauce. Alcohol warmth right up front, woody, sweet taste. Medium sweet finish.

This review is based on a draft quaffed at Baltimore Alewife: The color is pitch black, dark as a glass of ink; there is a wispy head on top. The nose is an intense whiff of malt and molasses. The palate is overwhelmed with a heavy blanket of toast and toffee, laced with hits of licorice, chocolate and brown sugar. The body is smooth and creamy - yet filling. This is my first 3 Star beer and hope not the last.

Look is pitch black with a thin coffee colored head.
Smell is astringent.
Taste is roast with a slight sweet sourness. Sweet is like syrup with a balanced tart note. Slight astringent note.
Maybe not what I'd expect from a porter. But not bad to drink.

Had on tap in Leesburg.
Pours a deep dark brown, near black, but looks a little thin.
Nose is a bit on the light side - coffee and malt come through but not much more for me.
Flavor is right on for an imperial porter - rich, dark, sweet and bitter in great balance. Notes of coffee, chocolate, and alcohol all present.
Feel is a bit on the light side with a pretty quick finish.
