Picked up a 750 mL corked and caged bottle of 3 Stars' Pandemic Porter. I believe this is the initial bottling run of this beer from the up and coming brewery, which is pretty cool, especially for one such as myself who really wants to see great brewing being done in the D.C. area. Poured into my Tired Hands flute glass.

Appearance: Extremely dark, the dark brown head (disappointingly) fizzles out quickly, as if it were soda. This scared me a bit at first, since these glasses were clean and I've never seen foam retreat so quickly. However, my fears are somewhat assuaged since thisseems, at least visually, to be a well-carbonated beer.

Smell: Massive roastiness--notes of espresso and char (almost smoky) are dominant, along with some chocolate and dark fruit, such as figs and dates, likely a product of the chocolate malt and considerable ABV. This beer has an outstanding nose on it.

Taste: The taste follows the nose nicely, with a huge dose of espresso/coffee-like roastiness, but with more chocolate added. There's an underlying charred note that was present in the nose that adds dimension to the flavor as well. Some sweet alcohol also adds depth and contributes a bit of a dark fruit element. A very good tasting imperial porter!

Mouthfeel: Medium. Not thick but slick. Pleasant carbonation level, though this beer cries out for a creamier mouthfeel.

Poured from the bottle into a nonic pint glass. We shall for go the big snifter this time! Quit tieing these cages on with a hammer drill, they are impossible to get off. Minimal pop off the cork with some tugging.

Quick half finger dark cocoa brown head that dissolves very quickly to a thin fine collar. Collar after sometime is completely gone. No retention, lots of soda snapping carbonation on the pour. Bottle contents slap and hit wet out of the gate, filling with a simple dark brown walnut and opaque color. There's some sheen legs around the edge of the glass. Otherwise the beer looks really dead on arrival.

Solid porter character, and a very impressive coffee note and dried bean aroma on the nose. Hints of berried fruit, almost raspberry and a faint note of dark chocolate. Pretty good nose all things considered, and definitely large.

Palate is pure sugar. Lots of thick sweetness and hints of just sugar and water, not honey, not brown sugar, not caramel, or sweet chocolate, just sugar. Coffee like aftertaste marred by molasses and more sugar rush. Not boozy at least, but hits with a big stomach warmth after some time. Cola like body and flat soda feel. Borderline drinkable with an almost syrup raspberry soda quality aftertaste. Nothing gels and the flavors are all over and melded by what seems like an overly sugared brew.

This brew has a solid inviting aroma, with a bunch of pieces that really need improvement. This needs work.

This is the pandemic porter base beer.

Pours a dark brown, very full and thick tan head.

Smell is roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, oats. It smells very sweet, lots of alcohol.

Unfortunately, this is too sweet, heavy malts. Sweet and sticky, not very smooth. The roast comes through, which is nice, but too much brown sugar flavors and alot booze, which overpowers the coffee and chocolate.

Overall, this is a bit messy, but still enjoyable.
