Best by 02/2020. Beautiful golden-orange color with a huge, fizzy, white head that explodes once poured into the glass (not to mention it fizzing out of the bottle once opened) with the last few ounces being cloudy, yeasty goodness. Nose is very funky and barny with hints of citrus, white grapes, and hay. A very promising, pleasant aroma but a slightly disappointing taste following all of that. Funky, fruity, and effervescent. I think it's just too boozy or stronger than it should be. Maybe I prefer lighter or table versions of this style. The feel is great although it can be a bit chalky as is typical of this style. A damn good beer that I would recommend but probably wouldn't buy again. Though I'd like to try Szech 'n Bretta.

375 ml bottle, best by 11/2019, into a tulip.

OK, maybe I jumped the gun on drinking this ... 2019? But it's still excellent!

The appearance is a real gusher. Big foamy head, golden color, nice lacing.

Aroma is mostly about the yeast. I won't pretend to know the difference between conventional Belgian yeast and the Brett, but all together, this is a yeasty package.

The flavor is a wonderful mix. It is a bit fruity (I guess that's the pears), but not very sweet. There is some citrus, but it's not tart, not compared to a lot of saisons. There's a lot of yeast. And it has a peppery kick to it.

Medium mouthfeel. It's carbonated. It's neither thin nor heavy, but probably a bit on the light side compared to some farmhouse ales.

Overall, great stuff. Highly recommended.

Beautiful shade of golden yellow. Head dissipates shortly after decanting, but leaves behind nice lacing around the glass and a scant but persistent whitish crown of bubbles. Just a tiny bit hazy. Carbonation is great, lots of little bubbles zipping their way from the base of the glass.

Scent is a familiar farmhouse ale aroma of noble hops and slightly funky Brettanomyces character. First sip, wow! A really delicious combo of citrusy flavours (reminiscent of lemon peel), low to moderate sourness, and a nicely bitter hoppy zing. Great mouthfeel. Complex but very, very clean tasting. The wild yeast taste reminds me of a crisper, cleaner Orval, actually -- except for the fruity notes.

There are at least two things I'd never have guessed about this brew: that it was primed (partially?) with pear juice, and that it's 8% ABV. This is far and away one of the best U.S. saison-style beers I've had, totally drinkable. Highly recommended.

Bottle No. 80455; Best by: 12/2019.

I first learned of Logsdon Farmhouse Ales from Erica Shea & Stephen Valand's book "Make Some Beer." Their story of visiting the brewery after finding an unmarked bottle of Seizoen Bretta is enough to evoke envy out of any adventurous craft beer fan. Needless to say, I popped the cap off this one anxiously and an eruption of foam began gushing out the top of the bottle as soon as it was opened.

First, the good.

The beer looks great. Beautiful amber color with a large, delicate white head that has excellent retention. Some sparse lacing on the glass.

The aroma is downright intoxicating. Lemon, pepper, and pear. Fruity, funky, and spicy. Rustic farm-like qualities abound. It's not even worth talking about the malt or the hops, because this is a total yeast showcase. Which makes sense since Dave Logsdon is the co-founder of Wyeast Laboratories.

Now, the not so good.

Admittedly, I opened this beer when it was too cold. I acutally prefer my beer on the cold side, but I let this sit out for 15 mins when I took it out of the fridge and it was still too cold. Logsdon recommends serving it at 48-54 degrees F and I'd have to agree. Letting it warm a bit works wonders. Initially, the flavor was too empty and the mouthfeel was thin. As the temperature rises, the flavor improves. Strong fruit and spice. Unfortunately, the body is way too light for its strength, carbonation, and complexity. I hate to say it, but it comes off as a bit of a watery mess.

Maybe I got a bad bottle? Or maybe it just needed another year or two for the brett to do some work. Whatever the case, this was very disappointing. I wanted to love this beer. I wanted to love this brewery. Everything about it is right up my alley. If you're going to make a rustic saison weighing in at 8%, you better give it enough malt backbone and enough body to support the complex flavors. A decent American saison, but Avec Les Bons Voeux this is not.

Wow, smell that fresh, fruity goodness! I get a huge amount of citrus, peach, apricot, and cherry. Let it open up some, and waves of brett funk appear. I love how rustic it seems - it tastes very rustic, too. It opens up with fresh orange juice notes, before transitioning into subtle brett earthiness. A distant aftertaste of sesame seed, black pepper, and grass adds to this beer's complexity even more. It seems slightly sweet and fairly full, yet the finish is oh so crisp and dry. This one is friggen' wonderful - it's deep, nuanced, rustic, and easygoing. In fact, it's one of the best American saisons I've sampled.

Carbonation is not an issue here; there's plenty of it. A beehive of foam quickly climbs three fingers up the glass - even at two and a half years past its 'best before'. I don't know what the label's talking about - this bottle of Seizoen Bretta looks vibrant and youthful, with energetic bubbles and a healthy, blinding golden shine (at least until the bottle sediment turns it into a milky sand and pineapple pulp cocktail).

Sublime has a smell - and this is it. The Brett has done its work. The aroma is tart, fruity and incredibly distinctive. Even serious attempts at describing it come off pretentious and preposterous: orchard fruit essence, balm of fresh bread, tincture of rose and grass. It sounds like the stuff of perfume ads.

The particulars of wild yeasts are indeed tough to characterize. When all goes well the beer tastes like a holy trinity of sweet, fresh bread, tart, overripe fruit, and pungent, unpasteurized cheese - but all in small doses. Despite how that sounds, this particular concoction isn't anything to be afraid of; the acidity is mild and while it is tart, it's certainly not sour. As far as wild ales go, this thing's a teddy bear.

The fingerprints of Brett are all over the palate crime scene as well. Seizoen Bretta drinks with the tang of tropical fruits and chewiness of warm oats but it finishes with a crudely earthy and notably farm-like 'barnyard' aftertaste. The pear juice, though added for carbonation, helps sweeten that finish.

The label might as well say 'Orval' - not only for the similarities in rich, mysterious Brett character but also because this too is a divine, near perfect specimen of a beer. I still have no idea who exactly these Logsdon guys are but I'm fast-tracking them to the top of my 'most wanted' list. Gambling in mother nature's casino is tough but the wins are significant. And Seizoen Bretta is the big jackpot.

Bottle serving. Pours light gold. Smell: i get a lot of pear juice at first. But, i can smell the brett funkiness and also a bit of spice. Taste: when cold, too much pear juice. Let it warm. It gets way better. Funky Brett notes all over, spicy character, rounded out by a but of hop and malt flavors. Feel: fairly good. Overall: an interesting experience. Good beer. Not for everyone. Good for me though.

Update: Had a second bottle of this. Once you drink this beer at the suggested temperature per bottle, it's freaking delicious. I really got into it. It's a very refreshing, delicious, and complex saison. Absolutely excellent representation of the style; I've just bought another bottle and upped my rating here because this beer deserves it.

I really like this beer. Great balance of saison / farmhouse favors, fruit hops, and tartness. Low to med tart moderated by light fruity sweetness. Maybe that is the pear they add for conditioning. Moderate to full body balances the rest. Very Nice breadth to the favors - moderately complex and quite interesting to drink. The complexity / natural character reminds me of sante adairius.

Honestly, the beeswax seal is a bit of a pain in the ass--it took me a while to open the bottle cap and as I did bubbles started to ooze out of the top. The resulting head was a manageable three fingers thick. Decent streaky and chunky lace. When pouring the golden liquid, you can see the yeast flowing down the center bringing a white hue to the glass. Despite the light color, the haze prevents you from seeing through any part of glass.

First impression is of the strong raw yeast smell. It's a bit like smelling a freshly opened pack of brewer's yeast. Behind this I get a lot of hard cider with both a sweet and sour element. I also note some spices like rosemary and thyme.

This not a mellow beer. I detect almost no malt base. Instead, I get some freshly ground black pepper and dried orange rind. There' sandy element of Belgium in this with that classic bite on the back of the tongue. Sour finish, but bitter aftertaste. The complexity makes this an intriguing beer. The body is above average while the carbonation leans the other way. It still seems balanced in the mouth because of the spiciness.

Pours a cloudy light amber with a ferocious, fuzzy white head that keeps growing and lingers forever. Nose wafts dust, grape skins, sweat, leather, horse blanket, fermenting Pears. Super complex nose that is slightly different with each whiff and at each temperature. Taste is a bit less complex - or perhaps just a but soapy. Begins with dry, dusty fermenting pears, before dusty grape must, then a kind of soapy finish. Body is medium, while the carbonation is boldly present if smoothly hidden, as is the heat.

750 ML bottle purchased from Binny's in Champaign IL. Poured into a Prairie Artisan Teku Glass.

A: Pours a beautiful, vibrant and hazed orange color. A billowing white head forms with excellent retention and rings of lace left all the way down the glass.
S: I get big black peppery aromas on first whiff. Which makes me pull back a little, as this breaths and warms it becomes much more nuanced. Musty basement cellar, lemon and citrus rind. Lightly estery fruits like bananas and peach. Maybe a touch of pale malts. Fantastic.
T: Follows the nose with a big black peppery spice. Earthy, basement cellar like musty flavors. Fruity esters, once again the yeast and Brett character here is out out of this world. Lemon, citrus, light grapefruit. Actually grassy and grapefruit hops build towards mid palate. Banana like esters are stronger in the finish. Again, maybe a touch of pale malts, but the yeast is the entire show for the most part. Love it.
M/O: A light body that is really spritzer like. Perfectly effervescent, with that firm crispness that is also ultra smooth. Beautifully dry as well. I get just a touch of heat on the back of the throat. The alcohol is a little stronger than I would like for the style, but so incredibly enjoyable to drink that is more than forgiven.

Every time I have this, it is a treat. I am glad I was able to find a bottle for myself to enjoy, instead of smaller pours at shares. Like I said before, they make the best Saisons in America.

Very different, unique beer. Pours with a beautiful large white head and hazy. It was a gusher. Very fruity and sweet upfront before it takes a dramatic turn to finish very dry and crisp. Taste is funk, melon, and pear. Very enjoyable.

Look: Gorgeous beer, first glass poured almost completely clear, with a nice thick head. beer is a light golden color and some lacing on the glass.
Smell: Tart and slightly funky, smells like a sour beer (not sure how else to describe)
Taste: A little peppery, sour, and tart. Slight medicinal taste that I usually get in sours. It also finishes with a slight herbal/grassy finish. Not sure if it is from the yeast or hops.
Feel: Perfect feel, a little thick, with a good level of carbonation
Overall: A really enjoyable beer. Glad they are distributed to MA now. I live in CT and I am looking forward to trying some of there other beers. This beer is good, but I am not sure I will buy many more at the $13ish price range.

Pours a slightly frothy cloudy gold with champagne-like character and about a half-inch head, which finally settles to about 1mm. Smells of coriander, orange peel, lemon zest and banana... really amazing. Taste follows through on the lemon zest and is only somewhat sour/funky, barely though.

A strange sort-of chalky feel lingers on, some residual brett possibly? It doesn't detract too much from the overall flavor though. This really reminds me more of a tripel than a saison, specifically La Fin Du Monde, with it's full and thicker flavor profile and especially the prominent banana smell. I can't believe I'm just now trying this.

Pours gold. Smells like a rawer, less tart Sofie. Big, jagged nodes of grass and pepper against tart brett and lemon.

Tastes almost as complex as the aroma, only with some more pronounced wisps of cereal grain. Tart lemon, pepper, barley, and a little bit of funk. Nice, but the back end is a little watery.

I enjoyed this just about equally as the oak-aged version, which is pretty neat because they taste very different.

Purchased at the Craft Beer Cellar in Waterbury for ~$12.99. Poured into tulip glasses and shared on a warm evening. Pours a bright and hazy straw yellow with a thick and fluffy white head that slowly dissipates and leaves great lace. The aroma is composed of yeast and bread, citrus, barnyard funk, and sweet wheat malt. The taste is a wonderful, smooth and funky classic saison. Mouth feel is nearly perfect, a silky medium body with nice carbonation. Overall, this is just a classic bretted saison. One of the best out there.

Pours a nice bright honey straw color. Little head.
Aromas are a nice unique mix of brett and saison yeast.

Interesting. Brett is not a style I have much, but was on tap at Row 34 so thought I'd try. Pours clear, little head, and lemony. Initially hit me as a sour, and I didn't like initially. But this grew on me and paired well with oysters. Just ordered a second one, so thumbs up. I will update this review after my 7th or 8th one. May not be spelled as well or make any sense

750 ml into a tulip glass.

Pours a hazy, golden yellow, big head with average pour, foamy cling throughout. Smell is strong Brett at the open, Belgian yeast, black pepper, some malt, and an overall fruity aroma. Taste is Belgian yeast, Brett- not overwhelming, but noticeable and complimentary. Pear flavor is more discernible than the general nose fruit, especially as it warms, and still picking up the pepper. This is really good. Dry, crisp, refreshing.

This is an awesome saison, one of my favorites, and I look forward to trying some of their other ones. Lucky to have this come to the Chicago area- if you can get this, don't walk, run.

L: Pours hazy orange under a 2” cream colored head S: Spicy aromas with cinnamon, citrus, saison yeast, over ripe fruit.
T: Bread, light caramel, big fruit flavors, a fruit tartness, pome fruit, lemon, suggestion of rosemary, with a dry herbal finish.
F: Very creamy soft in the mouth with medium high carbonation and medium body.
O: An excellent, complex funky saison for all occaisions.

Fairly new to the style but this just seemed very average with little wow factor. Some medium funk, brett, lemon, and earthiness. The appearance is a murky orange with noticeable sediment. I didn't really taste the pear juice or any other noticeable citrus notes.

Very good Brett Saison. Appearance is a mammoth off-white, extremely frothy head that settles slowly, loads of lace, and a hazy orange amber color. Aroma is yeast, malt, pears, plums, spice. Flavor's similar to nose, slightly sweet at first, then a bit of carbonic tang, followed by rest of characteristics and finishing again with a bit of bittersweet. Body is very good for this style and is the soft side. Overall, quite a drinkable beer.

The beer pours a cloudy hay colored yellow. The ecru head quickly dissipates to a thin collar that leaves great lacing. The scent is somewhat subdued with difficult to identify fruity notes and the anticipated barnyard funk that gives the impression of decomposing grass in a very pleasant manner. Hint of lemon and leather too.

The taste begins with a general fruity complexity that leans towards pears. Midway the yeasty phenolics and black pepper round out the flavor. Nice crisp and dry finish with a moderate level of carbonation. I'd like to age a few bottles to see how the brettanomyces continues to develop. I feel the additional aging would help create more depth and complexity. Nonetheless, very enjoyable.
