One of my couple favorite beers and my favorite saison there is.

A - wonderful. Copper-gold cloudy color, billowy huge (slightly) off-white head that sticks around for a while.

S - wonderful again. It smells effervescent and summery - spritzy somewhat tart lemon, peach, hay, barnyard, a very slight touch of spicy hop. Immediately on opening a tiny hint of banana yeast, but it's gone quickly.

T - pretty much perfect. Lemony tartness but not overwhelming or dominant. The excellent summer, saison notes of grass, hay, flowers - a field. Slight spiciness to balance it out. Initially a bit of honey, pear-like sweet malt, but it finishes perfectly dry. Extremely refreshing but also complex as you could want. What an export strength saison should be, and what brett should contribute - an accent that blends in with the excellent base beer.

M - nicely dry finish, a little prickly carbonation but could be juuust a bit moreso. Again excellent.

Overall, an amazing beer. As a saison lover, this would have to be my favorite saison. Hits the notes from classic Belgian examples but adds the wonderfully fruity, tart brett accent. Well worth seeking out. Honestly don't understand why this isn't massively sought-after.

Consumed on 8/21/2013. Poured into a goblet-style glass.

Pale, glowing orange and hazy with a big white foamy head that sticks around for the whole experience. Funky aroma with musty orange, lemon zest, and damp hay. This has a very refined taste - the flavors are mild but also complex and full. Damp earth, with a nice dry finish. Super creamy in the mouth and just a little bit tart and funky. At the same time it's also amazingly light and crisp. Just a wonderfully crafted Saison. The bretta does some great stuff to the beer.

BB Dec 2017

Beer is cloudy golden. A large white head with terrific retention on top. Good lacing.

Brett is strong on the nose. Tart cherry, mild farmhouse funk. Light fruits, quite bright.

Taste is great. Brett is strong, telltale funky, cherry flavours and a notable dryness. Strong fruit flavours are there as well; the pear is quite big and gives a balancing sweetness to the dry funk. Spices and a bit of grassy hops. Finish is very dry and a bit bitter. So much happening in here.

Medium bodied, moderate to high carbonation. Very soft bubbles. Refreshing and velcety.

Overall, very nice stuff.

750 ml bottle served in a wine glass. Recent pick up at a bottle shop in Lake Tahoe.

A: Pours a hazy orange color with a two fingers of dense, white foam forming on the pour. It recedes to a thick collar and thin film. Sticky sheets of lace are left down the glass.

S: Great Brett on the onset. Fruity, pear and apples mostly, with a nice funky undertone. Bordering on barnyard and cheese. A nice mix of both. Some stone fruit and light lemon grass are there with a light, white bread malt body. Mild, peppery yeast as well.

T: Funky up front with a big burst of citrus. Lemon and lime with a ton of fruity esters. Dry yeast notes with some great peppery spice. A little peppercorn, fresh oak and light bready malts.

M: Medium high carbonation with smooth and light mouthfeel. Medium level residual funk lingers on the finish. Crisp.

O: Absolutely delicious. I really enjoyed this one and finish the bottle with ease. Very well balanced and the Brett compliments the base so well.

Best Before: 04/2018.

(4.25) A: Attractive orange-copper colour with a sizeable puffy head. Commendable retention and wavy lacing.

(4.5) S: Straw, cloves, orange, grapefruit/lemon pith, sweeter mango, mothballs, honey, and a variety of spices. A wonderfully smooth and mellow aroma with bold juicy and spice qualities. One of the best farmhouse aromas I’ve experienced to-date.

(4.25) T: Tart grapefruit/lemon, cloves, straw, pepper, honey, and faint banana. As this warms there are some orchard fruit qualities including apple and pear. Pleasantly tart (nearing sour) with a diverse mix of flavours that are very funky. Dry and crisp would be an understatement.

(4.25) M: Medium bodied with a moderate-higher carbonation that works well.

(4.25) D: This is a fantastic and unique farmhouse ale (with brettanomyces) that I was very impressed with – across all categories. I’m glad I heeded that stranger’s advice in the beer aisle to give this a try – probably the best advice I’ve ever received from a stranger?
