Chestnut mild ale. Chestnuts are a unique brewing ingredient in Italy. Eataly Birreria’s Wanda is a moderate dark traditional mild ale with hints of roasted chestnuts.

Draught @ Birreria: This one poured a ruby tinged chestnut brown color. It has a bit of an off-white head that leaves a little lacing. An interesting nose. Definitely a whiff of chestnuts. Some sweet malts also. The taste is good. Body was a hair lighter than I expected. A little yeasty and bready, hints of the chestnuts, malts. Interesting and definitely worth having a second one.

Served on cask in a pint glass at Birreria.
Wanda pours a dark mahogany, lightening slightly towards amber at the very edge of the glass. The khaki colored foam is initially about two fingers tall atop the beer. While there's much lacing left behind, the head never really goes away completely either, there's at least a dusting of it all the way down the pint glass. The nose is disappointingly weak, though some toasty bread and nutty aromas are appreciable. The flavor profile has a little more life to it. Bread and biscuit maltiness and a definite nuttiness are the main attraction again here, but a subtle roasty, chocolate note creeps in to add a little depth to the beer. The body isn't overly chewy or rich, but it does have a little bit of sturdiness to it. The carbonation is predictably low given that it's served on cask, but that plays just fine with this beer. I enjoyed Wanda a bit more than the other Birrera beer I had (a witbier), and it's much more conducive to he cask conditioning they do with all their beers.

Review from notes:
Poured from cask at the Birreria into pint glass. Pours a hazy brown, not much head. Sweet malty and nutty aromas. Taste is similar, of nutty sweet malts. Very lacking in wow, especially for $10 a glass... Its ok, but not amazing. I expected much more...

Had at the Birreria, this is an interesting chestnut brown ale--evidently a common Italian style but not one I had had before. It's very dark brown with a thin tan head and some cloudiness, and smells like green roasted chestnuts, a little bit sharp still. This continues in the taste, which is lots of rich nut and earth with a smoky quality and some sweet/yeasty flavors. Very smooth mouthfeel with minimal carbonation--I could have used a bit more heft, I think, but it does drink very well. I liked it but suspect you could do slightly better with the style.
