Beer review from 10/26/2011; pours opaque pitch black with a 2 finger frothy dark tan head that faded slowly and left a frothy layer on top; this beer looked like a coffee drink and it left great foamy lacing sticking to the sides.
Smells of cocoa, coffee, toasted grains, floral hops, charcoal, caramel and burnt wood. The smell is toasty and hoppy at the same time, with an aroma of coffee and roasted malts dominating the nose.
Tastes of cocoa, chocolate, coffee, light vanilla, toasted grains, floral hops, herbs, charcoal, caramel, syrup, burnt wood, light citrus hops and a light smoky alcohol like a bourbon; this tastes like a smoked porter and was quite complex and flavorful.
Mouthfeel is creamy, smooth and slick, with a medium roasted body, very mild carbonation that slides across the tongue with easy and feels very light as it flows down.
This was a very easy drinking cask ale that was complex, tasty and very, very smooth. A really good beer that I enjoyed and would recommend trying as it was like a hoppy smoked porter that went perfect with sausage and cheese.
