This brew was served from the tap at Roc Brewing Company in Rochester, NY. It arrived in a globe, glowing a pale, toasty orange. A one and a half finger head of creamy white bubbles crowned the liquid, showing nice retention. This left patterned lacing around the glass as it went. Haze was thick, but no sediment was noted. Carbonation appeared active. The aroma was bright with mango and pineapple that nicely complemented the robust citric and soapy hop blend. The malts were pale, with a light toast, while metallic yeast sat high against them, acting to cut some of the sweetness to the back. Our first impression was that the flavoring was full and very pleasant. As we sipped, that same aromatic blend burst onto the palate. Sweetness started things off, in the form of lighter toasty malts and bright citric hops. With warmth the hop profile morphed into a more floral, airy mix, but it held up nicely against the strong phenolic bite that came through the peak. This mixed with enhanced, juicy sweetness of fruity hops to the back, for a sweeter, but well balanced and robust finish. The aftertaste breathed of Belgian yeast and grain, light wheat, those same aromatic tropical fruits, and soapy hops. The body was medium, and the carbonation was medium. There was a soft coating left all around the mouth, with a finite astringent twang. Slurp, cream, froth, smack, and pop, were all great. The abv was appropriate, and the beer drank nicely.
Overall, what we enjoyed most about this beer was the balance of flavoring. The grain profile was strong throughout, and the juicy, fruity, citric hops struck a nice mix. Off the bat the hops were surprisingly subtle, allowing for the grain, spice, and other flavorings to really shine, but by the end they became more and more apparent and integral to the experience. Each sip left you wanting more, as this was a standout for the night.
