The CANQuest (TM) is starting to take its toll on me! I swore, after the marathon AIPA reviewing of the past couple of days, that I was going to take a hops break, and yet, here I am, getting pulled right back in.

From the CAN: "The favor of whole cone Cascade and Centennial Hops dominates this Ameri[CAN] India Pale Ale. This unfiltered amber ale has a penetrating herbal mouthfeel and pleasing floral nose backed by Pale, Vienna, and Crystal malts. The use of a Hop Back allows us to collect all the flavor and aroma of the hops without gathering any extra bitterness."

The Crack! opened a CAN so full of beer that I got a little spritz across my fingers. That is all of the inspiration that I need to CANduct an inverted Glug and so we were off and running. The pseudo-cascade morphed into two dense fingers of puffy, tawny head with good retention. Good thing they mentioned that it was unfiltered or I might have guessed otherwise ... NOT! What a cloudy affair this was, with loads of floaties in evidence. Color was a deep-amber, almost but not quite coppery. Nose smelled like freshly-squeezed grapefruit juice and my mouth began to water at the prospect. Mouthfeel was medium and the taste of the hops was nicely balanced by the malt, especially the Vienna, making it bitter, but not painfully so. I swear, I am a self-avowed hophead, but that steady diet of Cigar City CANs really did me in. Great lacing began to appear as I drank, reminding me that I must do dishes here in the near future. Finish was semi-dry, hoppy, yes, but with enough off-setting malt to keep it from being overwhelming. Watch me drink anything and everything BUT an AIPA for the next few days after this.

Excellent IPA - you can drink more than one. Poured 12 oz can into pint glass.

A - pours a great copper color; not clear, but not murky

S - good smell; not overpowering aroma

T - not an overpowering taste, but still the great IPA taste

M - nothing special, but did not take away from the taste

O - a great beer.

Canned on date of 01/15/14

Appearance - Pours a hazy, rusty orange with an off-white finger's worth of head. Fair retention leads to a broken layer of suds across the surface. Lacing is small and spotty with good stick.

Smell - Kinda earthy. Some caramel. Subdued hop aroma.

Taste - Follows the nose; Earth and caramel upfront and throughout, while a present but underwhelming floral and slight citrus character makes up the bulk of the hop profile. Hints of honey. Finish is light pith bitterness.

Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied, but drinks a bit heavier with a low to moderate carbonation. Goes down easy enough.

Overall - Hop heads beware, this beer will not appease you. Along the same lines as a Longhammer; good beginner's IPA, but once graduated it's best not to look back. It's drinkable in the least.
