This beer was a legend before its time. No one really knows what the name means, but they know one thing for sure: A beer with this name on the label is very good. Its malty flavor is complimented with molasses and just enough hops. It’s an experience that cannot be described in words. So go buy some and see what we mean.

Pours a clear, dark brown color. One inch head of an off-white color. Great retention and good lacing. Smells of hops, sweet malt, slight nut, hint of caramel, and a hint of pine. Fits the style of an American Brown Ale. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of hops, sweet malt, slight nut, and a hint of rice/metallic. Overall, good appearance and aroma.

A - Poured out a clear, copper color with a one-finger, white head of foam. It left some thin rings of lace on the glass.

S - It smelled nutty with sweet caramel and some toffee notes.

T - It had a very grassy hop bitterness up front with a sweet bread taste. Good caramel flavor with some toasted malt.

M - It was crisp, sharp and very smooth. A light to medium bodied ale with a dry finish.

O - This is a nice brown ale. It seems to blur the lines between English and American. I'm looking forward to buying some of the other Bat Creek offerings the next time I'm in STL.

Bottle from the Wine and Cheese Shop via mail order.

Pours a clear deep brown color with a light tan head that leaves decent lacing.

Smells of robust caramel and toasted malts with hints of roast. Also present are very small amounts of toffee.

Tastes drier and less complex than it smells. Grainy toasted malts up front are joined quickly by hints of roasted malt flavors. Midway through, very light amounts of cocoa powder come into play, fading out into a moderately bitter ending. Mouthfeel is good, with solid carbonation.

Overall this was a decent beer that could be improved with a bit more complexity and smoothness in the flavor department. Not worth seeking, but not worth turning down either.

Brown with tinges of amber and perfectly clear. A slightly off white and fizzy head rises to about two inches, but doesn't last long and leaves little lacing.

Smell is lightly malty and somewhat nutty, with a tinge of sweetness.

The taste is a mix of chocolate malts and sweet brown sugar and molasses, mixed with plenty of nuts. It's quite sweet. There's a nice smooth milk chocolate background as well.

Body is very light and slightly slick, with very light carbonation. Could be thicker.

It's tasty and easy to drink, that's for sure. I think they might consider tweaking the recipe just a touch to make it more carbonated and give it a bit more body. Nonetheless this was a tasty treat and a chance to partake of a style I don't have very often.

I have high hopes for this brewery's future, and wish them nothing but success.
