Poured into a tulip from a 750ml bottle.

Pours an amazing thick viscous black liquid with a nice quarter inch tan head. The head is nice and dense but recedes pretty quickly down to a nice thick ring around the glass.

The aroma is delicious. Starts off with notes of coconut amazing coconut that is balanced by some oily/buttery notes of bakers chocolate and then amazing notes of bourbon. The bourbon notes are amazing.

The taste is also amazing. Sweet coconut notes mixed with chocolate, slight coffee roast and an amazing blend of bourbon barrels. The caramel and molasses sweetness from the barrels are amazing. Notes of heat and grain with slight vanilla as well. The coconut notes are extremely complimentary with the barrels. THe mouthfeel is a bit light but its still good.

This beer is lost to infection. I have heard of people loving it in February, and not so much lately.

A- Pitch black, little bit of lacing, coffee brown head. No legs on the lacing.

S- The qualities of a BA stout are there, but this one is soured. Bacteria has invaded this one and made it a shell of itself. I am still enjoying it a bit though.

T- Adjunct flavors are not there with the bacteria, but a nice ba stout is hiding there somewhere.

M- Kinda thin. Watery void.

O- This one has been lost; I want to try next year's version though when it comes out!!!

Served side by side out of snifters with Proprietors.

This beer is fantastic as the name states.. put up side by side with a Proprietors and i believe the taste trumps the Prop. Taste of coconut and chocolate with an amazing barrel flavor. I did not find the FV to be hot at all. The mix of the two barrels (blantons and knob creek) do something amazing with this beer. The mouth feel is not as good as prop but that was expected.

Overall i think this beer is better in the Taste category than prop. The barrel flavors are still stuck in my mind! This beer is going to age awesome!

Reviewing the Barrel Aged Fantastic Voyage from Perennial Artisan Ales out of St. Louis, Missouri. This bourbon barrel aged coconut milk stout is a blend of Knob Creek 9 year and Blanton's barrels, using the first (i.e., the uninfected) commercial batch of Fantastic Voyage as the base beer.

Score: 94

January 2014 vintage bottle served in a Mikkeller tulip taster and enjoyed on 05/10/14. Thank you Jim for the chance to sample this one.

Appearance: Pours an inky black color with a thin layer of tan head that settles to a ring around the glass. Good lacing and retention. 4.5/5

Smell: Coconut milk, chocolate and light vanilla. Primarily coconut, and amply so, but not quite the utter smack-you-across-the-face-with-coconut coconut bomb that the good bottles of Proprietor's Bourbon County Brand Stout were. Not super complex, but well integrated and appetizing. 4.5/5

Taste: Creamy coconut/coconut milk and milk chocolate, with a splash of whiskey flavor to the finish. Nice lasting flavors. The barrel is very subtle here, adding a nice complexity rather than taking the center stage. Not complex, but again, well done and tasty. Very similar to the nose, but with more barrel character apparent. 4.5/5

Mouthfeel: Medium-ish bodied. A bit over carbonated straight out of the bottle, but that breathes out with some patience and swirling. Creamy mouthfeel. Good balance. 4/5

Overall: Another delicious barrel aged stout release from Perennial, albeit without as much fanfare as the other. Fantastic Voyage (when not infected) is just good as Sump and 17. Seek this one out with confidence. It's pretty good and you will not be disappointed (unless you are expecting a Proprietor's clone).

Cost: $25 for a 750 ml bottle.

This is one of the best smelling beers Raul has ever come across. Like Nina Agdal fresh out of the steam room...breathe it in. Ahhh! Delicate aroma from the whiskey barrels, yet there is this gorgeous coconut presence that would even give Gilligan a boner.

Let's move on...

Flavor is real nice, yet it's a bit light while the mouthfeel is thinner than this player would like. I mean, if Nina put a few pounds on that rump...wowie.

Taste: Rich coconut begins the drink, followed by luscious chocolate. A whiskey punch asserts itself in the middle. After, you're left with sweet roast and caramel over the remnants of coconut that overpowered the beginning of the beer. After the latter three elements of the end fade out, you're left with a finish that is quite dry. This drinks a bit hot, but is saved by the fact that it's so damned delicious
