Inspired by the rustic Farmhouse-style Saisons of Southern Belgium, Regalia is brewed with barley, wheat and spelt and fermented with Brettanomyces. A sturdy malt character supports the complex array of flavors that the yeast provides, and will continue to develop over time.

Hazy golden in color with little penetration to light. A fingernail of off white with tiny tightly packed bubbles covers the rim and half of the top. The aroma is a combination of sour Brett and loads of sweet light malt. The taste is very much in line with the aroma with an acidic and slightly alcoholic finish. The mouth is dry and moderately carbonated.

Bought a bottle of Regalia at the Wine Harvest in Potomac Park, Potomac, MD on the recommendation of one of the clerks there. I've had one of Perennial's saisons before and was very impressed. Let's see how this one is. 750 mL bottle, dated 4/2014, into my Dogfish Head snifter.

Appearance (3.5/5): A brilliant burnt orange with a minimal white head that disappointingly dissipates quickly. Not much in the way of alcohol legs or lacing. The great color makes up for these other, more minor, shortcomings.

Smell (4/5): Yeast gives some grassy, lemongrass, herbal phenolic notes. Lots of tropical fruit and sweet citrus, namely orange and mango-like notes, making this one very unusual for a saison. .Juicy. Brett is also apparent in the nose and does a great job meshing with the other flavors, accenting them and at times accentuating them.

Taste (4.25/5): tart Brett notes in the front--lemon, grass, a general funk. Regalia comes back to its saison roots in the middle with a moderate bitterness, though the hop character leans strongly toward tropical fruit flavors–peach, mango, nectarine, sweet orange.. A very nice dry finish in which the yeast and phenolic, herbal flavors are the stars. Tartness of brett has faded by this point to the background. Complex and very interesting. I disagree with some of the other reviewers that this is a disjointed beer in terms of flavor profile. I quite enjoy the flow of flavors from tart to fruity hops and malt to dry, yeasty and phenolic. It works very well.

Mouthfeel (4.25/5): Vigorous (nearly too much) carbonation, medium-light body, very drinkable despite its high ABV. Excellent dryness in the finish that provides a nice counterpunch to juicy hops.

Overall: This is a very interesting interpretation of the saison style by Perennial. I particularly like how the Brett complements the herbal yeast and juicy/sweet hops and malt. Complexity from flavor to feel. Good stuff!

On tap at the brewery. Served in a snifter.

Appearance - Orange body. Head is brief. Eventually gone..

Smell - Fruity aroma. Citrus. Phenolic. Mild acidity.

Taste - Phenolic yeast flavors. Grainy biscuity malt. Doughy sweet malt. Acidity builds into the finish.

Mouthfeel - Medium body with low carbonation.

Overall - Weird phenolic flavors that I didn't expect from the description.

A: Light copper. Slightly cloudy. No lacing or head.

S: Slightly tart and funky.

T: Slight farmhouse funk to it that is a bit yeasty and earthy.

M: Prickly, with tiny carbonation bubbles that attack the tongue.

O: Good beer, but again not worth the high cost for a 750.

Murky opaque orange, brownish around the edges. Thin layer of foam on the surface, settling to a ring around the edges of the glass.

Dried fruit aroma, indistinct apricot and currants, estery yeast.

Taste is a little messy, vague tartness, large saison yeast presence and a lingering sweetness that stops just short of being cloying. Slightly fruity and earthy, malt sweetness again. Seems like a too high temp fermentation. Brett isn't really noticeable at all yet. Seems to have potential if aged long term, but not one I'd attempt.

Poured from the bottle a cloudy nectarine color with one finger of off-white head.

Aroma of tangerine, lemon, earthy yeast, and herbal notes.

The taste led with lemon, yeast, and herbal notes.

Medium bodied and dry with a lighter carbonation.

A delicious Farmhouse Ale from the folks at Perennial.

On tap at Dexter's for MCBW. Definitely a quality double saison. But when will I learn my lesson: I don't like saisons.

L - Pours an orange, somewhat amber body with a two finger eggshell head. Lacing and retention are great.

S - Abundant yeast with lemongrass and tropical fruits. Funky brett plays as part as well.

T - Funky yeast and tart brett notes dominate the taste. The flavor profile is unripe fruit. Very raw and in your face, not so much ripe. I like it.

F - Medium to light bodied with high carbonation. Has a wet finish.

O - The brett does wonders to the fruity/yeasty aspect of this beer. I'm a fan.

1/2 pint @ Chuck's, Seattle. Pours a hazy golden copper, minimal head.

Aroma is light grass, pear/apple, wheat malt.

Taste is spice, clove, floral Belgian yeast, earthy, citrus.

Mouthfeel is soft, a little prickly, crisp, light, medium body.

Overall a good earthy saison.

Is there Brett in here? Barely detectable. Got better as it warmed, still underwhelmed.

I was a little leery on this bottle since I knew Perennial had traveled along the more traditional Saison route. A nice burst of spice from the yeast that doesnt hang on the palate. Some citrus notes wipe them away a bit along with the brett notes, which again arent dominate. I wouldnt call this beer subtle, but everything pulls together really nicely

This beer pours with a certain ceremony. It's lemon or banana yellow with a pelasant haze. A creany head of white foam to op it that lasts and leaves lace. Nose is earthy and fruity. There is a whole lemon in this nose. It's not separate it's the juice, the bit of tartness and the bright zest but it's together in a way that is splendid. There is some sweet earth from yeast instead of a big bad funk and a lovely and floral that is like a touch of perfume on the air. The malt is on the nose with a bit of sweetness too and bit of bread.

Taste is elegant and refined yet friendly and drinkable. The funk brett is laid into the beer so well as to be a sweet earthiness. The lemon is profound but not too tart. It's juicy and lemony. The earth and the sweetness of the malt and the lemon peel create a musky scent as it warms. The malt keeps it on the sweeter side and there is a mild vinegar backnote. The mouthfeel is brilliant. Soft, smooth and creamy but plenty of tiny bubbles that lift it up on the palate. leaves with a lingering sweetness and a bit of funkiness and tartness combined.

This was an impeccable beer. A saison in the truest sense of the style. Without sacrificing the deep fruitiness to the brett character this one travels the palate like a wonderful but modest celebration. I loved it!

Poured into a Perennial snifter from a 750ml bottle.

Pours a nice hazy orangey golden yellow color with a nice white quarter inch head. HEad recedes pretty quickly to a frothy film and down to a ring around the glass.

Aroma starts with yeasty esters up first. Notes of sweetness particularly fruit juice notes of apple juice and pear. There is some slight tartness in the aroma and very very mild funk. Im surprised its not more funky since its brewed with Brett. Sweetness and malt dominates the nose with some slight notes of honey as well.

Flavor is quite faithful to the nose. Notes of fruit juice sweetness dominate. Pear especially. Notes of yeasty esters and sugary sweetness. Even some hints of clove. Somewhat similar to a Tripel in my mind. There are then some more earthy yeast notes that appear to be a bit funkier but are still dominated by the sweetness of the malts. More notes of ripe pear and sweet delicious apple are present. Nice crisp and carbonated with some mild heat from the 8% ABV.

Perennial is on top of their game. Their new brewers are stepping up quickly and deliciously. I wish this brew had more funk but regardless it is a delicious brew.

not super impressed with this one, although i think its drinking a bit young, especially in terms of the under developed brett character, and much like some other perennial beers, this will likey improve radically with a little age. a spelt based brett saison type, murky and muted dull dried leaf color, with an extremely short lived inch of off white head. the beer settles to look almost flat, and has a lot of cloudiness. it smells and tastes about the same, more saison than brett to this thing, and the spelt gives it just a bit more body and prominent grain flavor, but its in low enough proportion to not yet be spicy in the finish or intensely bitter and earthy. its just all balanced out pretty well. my onl real critique is lack of brett character, which i hope will develop in time. there is some saison yeast type esters going on, and a clean finish for such a grain heavy brew. it could really use more carbonation, which may come along with the brett maturity, it usually does. good beer, especially for 10 bucks, probably worth picking up another and laying it down awhile.
