Draft at Pizzeria Paradiso

A- Mostly clear deep gold body poured from tap to tulip. A white cap builds to just over a finger with good retention. Medium belt straps spotty lace down the glass.

S- Mostly Belgian yeast off the top with undercurrents of citrus and floral hops. Spices, herbs, light cracked grains, lemon zest and apricot hints.

T- For me the hops open up a little bit more at this stage with orange, flowery, grassy and herbal notes. The focus of the beer is still the Belgian aspects with spicy phenols, pepper, straw, pear and citrus zest. Malts are faint like the nose but some pale cereal feel.

MF- Crisp and light bodied with a frothy, slightly creamy texture. Carbonation on the high side suiting the flavor profile. Light bitterness from yeast and hops.

Pale Belgian yeast profile with obvious but not over the top floral and fruity hops. Seems like Belgian Pales have not and might never catch on with certain crowds but this is a good summer refresher. (980 characters)

Poured from a capped 750 mL bottle into a Brewer's Art goblet. Gentle hand. No identifiable date.

A: Hazy, light golden-orange body. 2 fingers of rocky, off-white head with excellent retention. Leaves impressive, jutting floes. Nice lacing.

S: Musty yeast. American hops with the floral component dialed up. Flourishes of fruit - apple, pear, lemon, white grape. Pepper. Hay. Earth. Brown & candi sugar.

T: American hops (cascade?) and a yeasty spice open. Tempered with a bready pale malt and some earthy funk. Light alcohol presence. Lingering hops in the aftertaste with citrus and light pine notes.

M: Moderate carbonation with a light to medium body. Smooth and slightly creamy, if not a touch too light on the palate.

O: Think Belgian pale ale meets American pale ale, plus some elements of a saison and whole flower hops. Nice balance with a slight tilt towards the hops. Very drinkable.

Minimal review, on tap:
Lightly hazy golden, nicely sustaining head.
Nose quite interesting bread and pine, lightly grassy floral (meadow).
Taste is a bit bland in comparison. Lighly fruity (pear), perhaps a hint of Belgian yeast esters, some noble hop bitterness.
Feel on the light side, buoyed but some carbonation. Given that, body relatively fuller. (355 characters)

I thought this to be a pretty decent beer. I noticed some banana notes in the aroma.
Looked nice with a tall head.
Smelled good too with spicey malts and hops.

When I drink a Belgian the first thing I want to smell, taste and feel a bit of is a good amount of alcohol delivered from a generous amount of malt, this beer is definitely lacking in this category. The nose is muddled and the taste is almost bland. Further proof that some people really miss the mark when going for "belgians." You can try it for the experience, bit I would jot seek this beer out. Had on tap in a glass. (423 characters)

Always a sucker for a beer with amazing carbonated action this built several inches of dense ivory colored foam. The body was bright yellow but a tad dingy.

Perfume, flower petals, roses, wheat, grains and a bit of honey touch the nose with a deliberate softness.

The flavor starts with honeysuckle and fresh peppercorns before it settles to a dry white wine, flower petals and light pear.

The feel is dry with a tangy sensation near the finish.

Nice, simple yet complex, but easy and light. Well done for the style. (520 characters)

On tap at the brewery. Served in a snifter.

Appearance - Hazy with a big white head. Pale orange body.

Smell - Grassy hops and a little grainy. Doughy and Belgian sweetness.

Taste - Much grassier. Some citrus, but otherwise grassy and herbal. Drops off quickly though. A little bitter after a grainy malt flavor.

Mouthfeel - Light and crisp. Medium carbonation.

Overall - Very drinkable and tasty. I'm impressed. (420 characters)

Check out that tightly woven head with bright white foam,Brussels lacing and about a half inch of thickness. It's a dull coppery color with moderate carbonation. That's an interesting melange of aroma with the Belgian yeast strain and a faint bit of piney hops. The flavor is strongly the Belgian yeast strain and then you get a bit of piney hops in the fade. The mouth is heavily carbonated,chalky and dry. (407 characters)

Poured a cloudy gold body that has large head and lace patches due to carbonation. Aroma is mostly citric hoppiness and a touch of funk and yeast; not much of a malty aroma although bread/yeast come through. I found the beer to be slightly chewey and bready, smooth, even a little boozy, sweet malts and possible sweet fruits in there but mostly the beer is dry and very hoppy (citric/orange is prevelant). It is a good beer but I found the hoppiness slightly overpowering the rest of the beer and not a perfect balance. (520 characters)

750ml bottle decanted into an oversized snifter. 5.9% ABV.
Appearance: Soft, soapy head over a brilliant copper body. Beautiful (4.25/5).
Aroma: The first impression is one of Pacific Northwestern hops. The second is the spice and earth and fresh vegetation that one would expect from a pushy Belgian hop strain. There’s a touch of kumquat and apple cider on the backend. Very inviting (4/5).
Taste: Very little stands out. A little citrus, a little apple, and a little caramel. The American hops wind up in the aftertaste, and then gently fade to black. It’s light and refreshing, but not mind-blowing (3/5).
Mouthfeel: Light body, medium/high carbonation (3.75/5).
Overall: In Brew Your Own magazine, Jamil Zainasheff suggests that when you are designing a Belgian Pale Ale you should not “use citrusy or catty American-type hops, as they seem to clash with, rather than, accentuate, the phenols and ester from fermentation.” I think that’s a little bit of what’s going on here. I definitely don’t hate it, and I recognize it’s not trying to be the truest example of the style, but there is a touch of “clash” that I couldn’t put my finger on until I read Zainasheff’s comments. Ultimately this beer is kind of like me… pretty to look at, but built to be slightly disagreeable (3.25/5). (1,314 characters)

Bottle from Dad. No bottle date but worried I let this sit around for too long. Oh well. Pours a light copper/dark gold color with big fast creamy frothy head. Lots of bubbles coming up from the bottom. Aroma of earthy yeast and hop, orange, pine, dirt, hay. Flavor is earthy yeast, straw, and maybe some stale hops. Probably let this sit a little long but not bad. Yeasty farmhouse funk. Easy drinking and plenty of carbonation. (429 characters)

750ml bomber poured into a snifter. The pour was pale golden and slightly cloudy. A 1-inch head emerged and retained, with pleny of thick lacing and an average amount of carbonation. The nose was grassy and hoppy.

I like this one. Very well-balanced with just the right amount of malt cut by the hoppy goodness at the forefront. It finished with notes of spice and yeast. Complex but not pretentious. I'll certainly have another. Well done, Perennial. (452 characters)

a delightful little beer here, a clever take on an underwhelming Americanized style. this pours like champagne, clear light yellow and very brightly carbonated. its got a semisweet nose, with touches of honey and clover meadow cascading my senses. Belgian yeast more like a witbier than a pale, and just the right amount of hops to be sassy without being bold or brash. the taste is exactly as I described the nose, with some almost wild yeast elements creeping in, and more of the honey flavor without the sugar on the finish, fully fermented by what appears to be a very active and powerful strain of Belgian yeast. the feel is a little out of place, carbonated like a brut and finishing dry, its unexpectedly light in that way, and almost rushes me through the flavor journey. its super light and drinkable, especially at under 6% abv, but I would have liked the feel to be just a bit more relaxed. still, its just right for summer drinking, and is a great introduction to perennial ales for me. I will absolutely look forward to drinking more of their stuff and visiting their brewery my next pass through the gateway city. (1,127 characters)

I had this at The Porch in Virginia Beach.

A cloudy yellow beer, with nicely foamy head, and not too much protein thickness. Scantily laces down the glass.

Smells like fresh greeen hops. Reminds me of the stuff I've grown and brewed with, very woody and grassy.

The taste is a bit rough at first, but its very balanced and starts going down incredibly quick after some acclimation. The maltiness has a toasty character, reminds me of the first time I had Fat tire. Amazing how light it is to get this flavor. That toastiness really works with the character of the hops to tease out the finer flavors in them, which I would have guess weren;t there based on the aroma. Belgian spices bring it all together for an interesting finish.

The body was balanced, and I mentioned, incredibly drinkable. I'm not a fan of the trend of >7% IPAs, and I'm happy this one is bucking that trend.

I would drink this again. (916 characters)

Smell: Belgian yeast commingled with earthy hops, peppery spice and orange peel

Taste: Opens rather yeasty and peppery, with a move toward and earthy and fruity hop flavor in the middle; the spices linger in the finish rounding out the flavor profile

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate to high carbonation

Overall: A really nice hybrid style beer - a bit of a Belgian pale, a bit of a Belgian IPA and a bit of a Wit (500 characters)

You get a rich, frothy head of two fingers, somewhat airy so it starts dimpling right off and retention is average to average plus, off-white in color, randomly assigns big splotches of lacing to the glass, not consistent around the sides. The liquid is a coppery orange, more red tint than yellow, loads of effervescence, a cloud of hyperactive tiny bubbles churning inside. The nose has a decided leafy, earthy quality to it, metallic and with notes of cracked black pepper and sourdough bread crusts, there is a softer side featuring banana, flowers and peach pits, not getting much citrus, earthiness builds and gets close to asphalt or tar at times. Medium-bodied and firm, the carbonation is lower than would be expected based on visual inspection and it is dry and slowly paced from mouth entry through finish. Produces that metal, mineral to earth side in spades, the herbaceousness is not green and biting, more like fallen leaves, twigs and bark. Increase in sour oranges, decrease in flowers and pepper. The banana, bubblegum persists, low level of apricot, apple, peach fruit. Baking soda, bread crusts and toasted dough, not sweetly yeasty. The dryness impedes length of flavors, accentuates its bitterness. Refreshing in its own way, not really a personally favored style. (1,286 characters)

From the label: "In the hop capital of Belgium, Hommel is the word for humulus, the plant genus where hops reside. Our Hommel Bier defies tradition by combining North American malts, Pacific Northwest hops, and a Belgian yeast strain. The result is a beer that combines earthy and spicy tones from the yeast with a slight orange note contributed by the hops. We think it's buzzworthy."
Slightly hazed, golden orange color, small white head. Foam faded but never disappeared, thinnest of lace lines. Initial smell is of earthy hops, some yeast and pepperiness. A bit of citrus notes as well. No alcohol burn is noticeable.
Taste has a good dose of hop bitterness. Leafy and earthy, touch of pepper or other spice. Belgian yeast in the aftertaste, with more citrus and grapefruit hoppiness. Dry finish. Slightly thin mouthfeel, average body. Complexity of flavor as expected from a belgian ale, but with a healthy kick of hops was quite enjoyable. (1,003 characters)

On tap into a really big pint glass @ Llewellyn's in Wildwood (proper glassware anyone?) Pours a coppery amber w/ a minimal head.

Aroma is floral with plenty of spicy and fruity esters from the Belgian yeast. Pretty standard Belgian pale ale smell.

Taste follows nose. Pale malt, Belgian yeast, w/ some floral and spicy undertones.

Mouthfeel is medium-bodied, smooth, drinkable.

Overall a pretty average Belgian pale. Good but unremarkable. (444 characters)

Mostly clear copper pour with thin wispy head resting on top. Retains well while leaving some rings of lacing on the glass.

Touches of well-placed juicy hops, citric fruit and toasted bread in the nose.

Immediately more expressive than I expect for the style, driven by some juicy hoppiness, orange peel and balanced bitterness. Nice backbone, bread crust, caramel and Belgian yeast. Finishes a little dry and hoppy.

Medium body, well carbonated, crisp and juicy on the tongue. I literally took two sips of this and wanted a full pour - extremely drinkable, flavorful and balanced. (620 characters)

Really happy to be able to try something from this brewery.

This is a nice Belgian Ale. Shouldn't it be a Belgian ipa though? It's a little sweet with the hop tones coming in the back as a decent accent. Carbonation is quite lively. After I pour the dregs in, the feel is quite smooth; silky almost.

This should be a Belgian ipa. I mean, hops are in the name. Ya know? Very glad I had the chance to try it. I'm looking forward to more from this brewery. (457 characters)

One finger of soft white head that slowly recedes.Nice thick film of foam. Good bubbling floating around a slightly hazey amber and copper colored hue. Good lacing too.

Spicey, faint citric hop aroma combines well with a yeasty dry fruit and toasted caramel malty aroma. The hop dominate the aroma, but overall is very balanced.

Mild toasty malts upfront. Cracker like crispness accentuated by the Belgian yeasts dryness and American, earthy and slight citric hop flavors. Such easy, carbonated, cleansing drinking. This beer is great and one I will buy again. (563 characters)

Pours translucent medium amber, nice full head on top. Nothing special but looks nice.

Smells great--lots of bright, bitter orange citrus, some flowers and spice, dry champagne like yeast.

Taste is pretty similar, pretty bitter without being a hop bomb, lots of orange and some grapefruit, some dry spicy yeast.

This is a really solid beer, tasty and fairly original and easy to session.

750ml bottle served in a tulip. Poured a pretty, clear gold with a couple of fingers of fine bubbled white head. Aroma was a little yeasty with a nice hit of clove. Crisp and dry, light bodied. More clove in the finish along with some citrus and a decent amount of hop bitterness. Fairly carbonated. Very easy drinking. The best beer from Perennial out of the three that I have tried so far. (391 characters)

SMELL: Earthy, leafy, soft resin, dragon fruit, yeast, faintly medicinal, peppery, floral, clementine pith

TASTE: Hop bitterness, leafy, tree bark, nutty yeast, orange peel, faint white peppercorn, kiwi, chalky, light melon rind, biscuity, mild warming alcohol, dry semi-bitter finish

Fresh and in your face, but without being aggressive. Depth and complexity won us over, and each sip made us think a little bit more. Hoppy Belgian Pale Ale with a generous and skilled hand adding Pacific NW hops. Best of both worlds? (592 characters)
