Poured from a capped 750 mL bottle into a Brewer's Art goblet. Moderate hand. No identifiable date.

A: Dark, wine-brown body with nice clarity. 1 finger of coarse, tan head. Below average retention. Scant lacing.

S: Rather sweet, raisin, dried cherry, grapes. Hint of musty funk. Lemon juice. Not quite what I was expecting, but I'm into it.

T: Sweet dried fruit hits immediately, followed by a noticeable amount of tartness and roasted, nutty malt. As the beer warms the sour element diminishes slightly and the malt is pushed more to the forefront. Semi-dry finish with lingering citric acid, chocolate, dark roast. Alcohol presence is consistent with 6.6% ABV.

M: Mouth-filling, high carbonation with a medium body. Unexpectedly effervescent, which I can't quite tell if I dig or not.

O: This one took me a bit by surprise. More in oud bruin or flanders red territory than a dunkel or dunkelweizen, but with a greater roasted malt presence and uncharacteristically high carbonation. This is presumably last year's release, so perhaps almost a year in the bottle has put a twist on this one. Regardless, nice depth of flavor. Good stuff and a bonus score bump for uniqueness.

750 ml acquired in travel through NY State on clearance. My first Perennial beer. Awesome story behind these guys. A brewery to be watched for sure.

Roasted, nuttiness, caramel malty sweetness. Not as strong of a traditional flavor of a Dunkel. It was a little thinner but easy to drink. The Walnuts worked very well. A tasty and inviting treat. Easy to drink. Not one dimensional but not too complex ether. Just enough to figure it out by the end of the bottle. I hope to get this one again!

A somewhat hazy, brown body with a very thick, rocky, light tan head. Sweet, berry-like aroma; blueberries and watermelon. A tart, sour flavor. Medium-light body with a rather coarse feel due to the carbonation; mildly astringent.

A nice look and aroma leads up to great expectations but a rather odd flavor and rather watery and rough mouthfeel greatly detract from the whole. Perhaps it's the black walnuts that contribute to the weird taste experience and the rather acidic and phenolic character. A hint of a hefeweizen styling and a bit of a nutty character barely pokes through the fruit and sour notes yet can't pull this brew together in the end. Interesting but not necessarily all that great...

Picked this up because it was on clearance at Riverside Liquors in Frederick. I figured it was interesting enough to be worth a try. Good looking beer but had a weird fizz when poured, almost like a soda instead of a beer. Fizzy head also dissipated quickly, had me a little worried. But the smell was excellent, very interesting, The taste was also interesting, and very good, but not awesome. But feels a little light, and again, kinda fizzy. Overall while not a bad beer by any stretch, being interesting is the best thing it has going for it. While I enjoyed it I will not be swinging back by to grab any more of these despite the good price.

A: cloudy dirty/muddy brown with minimal head and lacing; maybe a notch up as I am not sure it might hit style right
S: definitely get the banana witbier notes, but thereus a nuttiness that might disguise itself as earthy
T: banana, pepper, and other standard flavors. Then in the back, walnut quite distinctively counters the front tastes. The finish surprisingly brings some banana back in (along with its sweetness) but the walnut holds on as well
M: oily nuttiness that epitomizes the walnut essence of the beer to me, reminding me most specifically if the feel from the walnut skins after a few nuts have been consumed
O: rated on the fact I think it hits the style and the novelty of recipe. Have had this before and enjoyed it, this taste confirmed my like of the beer and the rating follows.

i have always wanted nut browns to be more nutty, to actually taste like nuts, and a dark lager is just a fabulous format to finally find a beer that tastes like real nuts. a hazy dark brown beer with a short inch of tan head without a lot of retention. the beer appears quite thick for a lager, and there is some yeast sediment present. it smells amazing, like fresh roasted walnuts, or fresh baked dark chocolate walnut cookies, as it has a nice dark german grain complex in there too, and a hint of bakers chocolate from the roast. the walnuts are by far the dominant flavor, adding an earthy and semisweet protein complex, that has notes of vanilla and tree bark, as well as a general sweetness akin to fresh maple sap before its boiled down into syrup. its perfect for spring, sturdy enough for cold weather no doubt, but jovial enough to remind us all that we have almost made it through winter. how to describe the flavor of a walnut? thats very tough if youve never had a walnut personally, but i think this beer showcases that unique flavor brilliantly, while still being a really cool beer underneath. the lager yeast is bready and adds to that cookie feel, while the finish is pretty clean for its vanilla sugar sweetness throughout. fuller medium body and a smooth texture. maybe a little undercarbonated, but i like the way this sits in my mouth and stomach, extremely satisfying. a memorable brew, perennial is on a roll!

Who says that "extreme" has to start with high-alcohol, exotic ingredient, or shock factor? Sometimes the beauty of an highly creative taste in beer is as easy as a classic and proven style and with a simple and common addition: Dunkel and walnut. Enough said.

As the dark German-style beer pours, it does so with a sturdy brown appearance. A glimpse of crimson in one light, then a garnet low light in the next, its brazen, bronzen hues carry a stately and masculine appearance. As a frothy head emerges, it carries with it ivory hues and endures the session with ease; all the while gracing the sidewalls with intricate lace.

Its aromas open with an understated simplicity but the scents build patiently and deliberately as it warms- starting with an off-caramel, toasted grain scent that reminded me of bran. But a toasted scent emerges, then chocolate, then nuttiness, then the high tar of walnut in its roasted regalness. Though an herbal tea and tobacco note comes forth, the stage is set...

Its malty-nutty taste is sweet and bready early- toast, bread crust and bread all make their way into the early maple flavor. Then there's the natural toasty, nutty and chocolaty flavors that round out the bolder side of the aisle. And then the taste kicks into hyper-drive as its walnut oils saturate a bit deeper with those dark, bitter and earthy richnesses.

Its body is considerably light and effortless, expecially when the bolder side of aroma and taste carries so much gravity. But the beer is quite moderate in its weight on the palate, offering solid complexity but drinking so, so smooth. Dangerously flirting with watering in the middle, the ale finishes minty, earthy, nutty, and dare I say- crisp?

And that's the beauty in these classic styles- they carry so much variety in taste even though the beer may be lighter in alcohol and body than we're used to- but that's its charm. That's its intrigue, and that's its curiosity. Perennial Ales takes full advantage of true German Dunkel flavor but with their own American-ized surprise.

The beer pours a hazy dark brown with a wispy off-white head that fades quickly and has some perimeter stickiness. The nose is walnut banana bread, but is more banana than walnut. The taste is bready sweetness upfront followed by a slightly bitter walnut skin and alcohol. The beer feels medium bodied with rich, nutty, malty sweetness, and a lingering bite that doesn't seem to sit heavy on the palate. This beer is quite drinkable and has a distinct and subtle walnut presence. I think this beer is definitely worth the bottle/growler price and I plan on getting more next week.

Poured from a bomber into a shaker pint, the beer is a deep, vibrant, amber-nut brown coloring with a tall, frothy, dense, bubbly, off-white head. Aromas of rich sweetness, roasted nut highlights, toffee, and earthy notes. Flavors of roast and tangy sweet forward, with toffee notes, roasted nutty highlights, cream highlights, and some chocolate notes. Pretty layered on the palate. Lighter bodied, but smooth, providing a crisp finish to a beer that is almost velvety and light in mouth. The aftertaste is more of the tangy sweet, with caramel and toffee blending together. Very flavorful and tasty beer.

(A)- Pours a deep burnt sienna brown color. Some tan froth.

(S)- A nice richness meets and underlying nutty profile. Some subtle vanilla-like sweetness.

(T)- Quite similar to the smell. A nice nuttiness meets an underlying subtle vanilla sweetness.

(M)- A good carbonation level meets a smooth yet mildly sweet nuttiness overall.

(O)- An interesting take on the style. The walnuts really kind of take over the overall profile of the beer and adds that extra layer to the dunkel. Just a shame that I would like to see the beer's base come through more which would help this remind me closer to a dunkel than it is; more brown ale-like to me.

A - Pours a dark red mahogany body with a fizzy khaki head.

S - Roasted malts, slight sweetness and I'm picking up some walnuts as well.

T - Dark fruits, walnuts, earthiness, vanilla, molasses and the ending has a tartness to it.

M - Light bodied, not a thick beer, medium carbonation. Has somewhat wet/dry finish.

O - Nice seasonal... Should have came out when the leaves are falling on the trees.

Appearance - Brown and murky. Thin collar after a small head settles.

Smell - Oh dear. Smells like paint and walnuts. A bit of acidity.

Taste - Very nutty. The paint aroma now comes off as a chemical mushroom flavor. It's kinda gross.

Mouthfeel - There's a very slight tartness that accompanies the weird off flavors. Medium body.

Overall - Bad. No one else thinks this is bad, but it's bad.

Pours a super-effervescent brown/chestnut with 3 fingers+ of tan head. Faint traces of lacing & head retention

S: Nuttty. brown bread & a faint whiff of sourness

T: Figs, brown bread & a bit of pear & walnut up front. Dryness, faint hints of sourness, tartness & a bit of choke cherry, plus pear & apricot & more brown bread as this warms. Finishes fruity, with figgy sweetness & a touch of brown bread & dryness & some walnut

MF: Medium bodied with lively carbonation

Seems a bit off for the style, drinkable enough, but flawed. I will have to keep an eye on freshness dates with this brewery from here on, this 6 month old beer has not held up me thinks... I liked Piney River's take on this better by quite a bit

A: The beer is clear and very dark red in color (black when viewed from afar) and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high off white head that died down, leaving a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light aromas of walnuts are present in the nose along with notes of brown and nutty malts and yeast.
T: Similar to the smell, the taste has flavors of sweet and nutty malts along with hints of yeast.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer doesn't taste like your average dunklweizen and seems a little reminiscent of a brown ale with its flavors of nutty malts. It is definitely very interesting.

The beer comes in a copper dark brown.

The aroma has roasted malt, but also a lot of fruit.

The flavor has the roasted malt of a dunkel, but more light with caramel and light brown sugar. I get more fruit in here than nuts. There's a pop of bright apple, which then complements the nuttiness really well.

The mouthfeel is light and carbonation. The sweet gentle malt is wonderful on the finish.

A wonderful dunkel. More on the light side with the fruit and nuttiness instead of the deep roast of the traditional German ones. Very drinkable.

From 06/01/13 notes. Had an 8 oz. pour of this on tap at Tørst in Brooklyn, NY.

a - Pours a reddish dark brown color with one inch of off white head and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of walnuts, sweet vanilla, cream, fruit, roasted malts, nuts, and earthy notes.

t - Tastes of walnuts, peanuts, roasted malts, dark fruits, chocolate, toasted malts, earthy notes, musty, and light sweet vanilla. Again, tson of nuts to it, as ot be expected.

m - Medium body and low carbonation. Smooth and creamy, and easy to drink. Nice mouthfeel.

o - Overall I thought this sounded interesting and thought it worked really well. As you'd expect, there is a ton of walnut in the nose and taste, mixing nicely with the roasted and toasted malts. Worth checking out, would have it again.

Good, refreshing and fairly light beer. Poured into an Aventinus Weizen glass. Murky brown color with a medium size light tan head. Ruby highlights when held to a light, decent head retention and some lacing.

Aroma is good, bready malts, brown sugar, hefe style yeast and a little banana. There is also a hint of floral hops.

Flavor is similar but not quite as prominent. The walnuts add an earth musty aspect to the flavor...the hefeweizen type aspects are less pronounced. Sweetness, malts and the walnuts are the most prominent flavors. Pretty tasty.

Mouthfeel is crisp and rich. A hint of bitterness and floral hops at the end but mostly a nice bready, sweet, fairly well carbonated brew.

Good one, very drinkable and flavorful without a high abv.

A looks like cola in color with enough clarity to almost see the other side under the large and loose beige head, one thick ring followed by lots of random patches

S smells like chocolate chip banana bread with walnuts and caramel, that's about all I get but that's more then enough to please

T earthy herbal notes and the walnuts more noticeable and the banana breads toned down, tastes pretty solid but the nose had a little something over it, some raisin as it warmed

M lighter side of medium, a little airy at first and it flattens out rather quickly, long nutty banana bread finish

O interesting version of a dunkel, no real complaints other then a a few extra bubbles in the mouth, nose was the highlight and reminded me of Grandmas baking in a good way

I'd drink this again but I feel it would be better suited for that evening when the leaves first start to fall off the trees

On Tap

Appearance: the color of a dark honey amber, like old crystallized honey. Very appealing

Smell: toasted walnuts, caramel and light molasses

Taste: it's beautifully smooth, sweet, and wonderfully balanced. It tastes of roasted walnuts (roasting brings out the sweetness and natural oils in walnuts, enhancing the flavors), sweet banana, light molasses or brown sugar and malty.

Mouth feel : smooth and tingles the tongue

Side notes: it's better than the banana walnut bread I made this morning. My first intro to dunkelweizen and it won't be my last.

Reviewing from notes after enjoying on tap at Bier Station as a leftover of a mini Perennial tap takeover. Served in a small Belgian tulip glass.

Appearance - Pours a translucent dark brown color with ruddy chestnut highlights where the light refracts through the liquid. Atop the body sits a beige two finger head that is frothy and fine, consisting predominantly of microbubbles that give it a sort of whipped appearance, but with less body. Retention is very good, with a half finger or so of thickness hanging around even after I begin to drink it down. healthy rings of lace affix to the side of the glass showing where the liquid levels were previously.

Smell - A subtle blend of malty sweetness, with some dark bread and toasted grain coming through as well as pleasant notes of light caramel. However, what sets this beer apart is the wonderful nuttiness that pokes through after the initial wafting of aromas, earthy and very complementary to the sweeter initial tones that present themselves.

Taste - Many of the same profiles are present in the taste, with the walnut being a little more dominant than previously noted. Flanking the earthiness comes a parade of sweet grain and toasted bread as well as characteristics of whole grain cereal, like Museli. The weizen yeast is also present here where I did not pick it up with the aroma, imparting faint esters of banana and clove. Not overpowering, but just a little bit strange--I'd rather get the full force of those delicious walnuts and wish it was a tad cleaner.

Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied with moderate carbonation and a semi-sweet finish with low bitterness.

Overall, a very tasty and inventive take on the German dunkelweizen. Certainly not traditional, but plenty good enough to be worth a go, even for German beer purists. I'd say Perennial's first foray into German styles is a pretty good success.

Poured from 750 mL champagne bottle to a tulip glass. Bottled 2/2013.

A: Murky copper, active carbonation, copper-toned and foamy head.

S: Malt, wheat, granny smith apple, bubblegum, coriander, walnuts.

T: Malt and apple backbone with wheat, walnuts, banana, and plum.

M: Medium-bodied with slightly hoppy finish and bite from the carbonation that leaves a nice warmth but doesn't linger in an unwelcome manner.

O: A very fresh and flavorful seasonal offering from a new brewery (to me). I'll definitely be picking up more of their offerings, if I can find them.

As a huge fan of both the dunkelweiss style and walnuts I was excited to find a bottle of this at Capone's in Norristown. It was worth every penny.

Appearance: Near black, unfiltered with the expected dunkelweiss head.

Smell: Aroma of roasted walnuts, caramel and expresso.

Taste: Black walnuts, caramel, subtle fuit sweetness and coffee.

As a lover of the dunkelweiss style, I routinely keep a keg of Franziskaner dunkel in my beer cooler and many bottles of Ayinger Ur-weisse in my fridge. This is the first American craft version of dunkelweiss which rivals the Bavarian originals and even surpasses them in quality. A must try if you can find it and like the style. If only BWD was more readily available.

on tap at bainbridge barrel house

Deep almost cola brown colored pour, thin white head and mild retention. Spotty lacing streaks the glass while drinking.

Toasted walnuts, caramel sweetness and toasted grains in the nose. Hints of sweetness and warmth with a continuing notion of chestnuts on an open fire.

Extremely nutty up front, toasted, roasted and broasted hints. Meaty walnuts, bread crust and caramel. Fuller backbone, decently sweet and slightly warm in the finish.

Fuller medium body, decent carbonation, creamy and smooth on the tongue. How do you effectively prevent boring people with a traditional style - evidently you walnut the crap out of it. I was into this but I could see some not enjoying it quite as much.

Dark, almost cola like brown with haze, moderate tan tinted head. Scent brings lots of caramel with some notes of roasted nuts and grain, some dark fruit also present. Scent is quite bold with sweet malt the star and an adequate amount of roast, some earthy and grassy hops - strengthens at the end of the sip. Medium bodied, light in carbonation. Another decent beer from Perennial.

Taken from my beer journal dated 6/13/12

Appearance: 750mL bottle poured into standard pint. Colour is a nice walnut-brown with a large two-finger head that fades to a puffy layer on top with minimal lacing. No visible carbonation but it certainly is audible!

Smell: Faint aromas of sweet malts, bready yeast, and walnuts.

Taste: Well-balanced flavours of sweet, nutty malts, spicy yeast, and a warming boozy finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-full body is thick, silky, and alive with plenty of carbonation. Finishes with a lingering stickiness.

Overall: A solid brew. In general, it is a pretty sweet beer but not in a cloying way. It is nicely balanced and interesting enough for me to want to finish the bottle.
