750ml bottle, 2014 release, poured into a Goose Island Bourbon County Stout snifter.

The beer pours a jet black color, thick, inky with a big caramel head, nearly 3 fingers with an aggressive pour that nice nice retention with spotted lace. The aroma has tons of chocolate, chili pepper, cinnamon, stone fruits and rich grain. It's as advertised, plenty of the adjuncts, balanced quite well, though simple in its own right. The flavors echo the nose, loads of chocolate, plenty of chili pepper, a touch of heat, but delightful roasty and earthy flavors, cinnamon is there, fruit, toasted coffee bean, toeing the line between earthy, sweet, and rich. The mouthfeel is so nice, coating, soft, smooth, lively carbonation that isn't abrasive, full bodied with a lightly dry finish.

Verdict: A very nice stout from Perennial, definitely puts the select ingredients in the spotlight. Nice balance and interplay, simple in that there isn't a lot going on beyond those adjuncts, but impressive in how complex they can feel and how nicely they go together.

On draft.

Only spicy chile on the nose. Strong taste of vanilla and even more cinnamon with some restrained chile spice at the end... Probably the best beer I've had including Chile (it's often overdone).

4 oz pour in a wine glass at Birch & Barley

L: Black with a red hue. Absolutely no head and I attributed it to timing but I was told by a friend that when I poured from his bottle he had zero head as well.

S: Sweet smell with vanilla and cinnamon. The smell was absolutely fantastic.

T: Boozy with sweet cocoa taste blended nicely with vanilla and cinnamon. Nice little pepper burn on the backend.

F: Was a little disspointed, as I was hoping for some more heavy feel. In my opinion it is what was keeping this beer from being on the same level as Hunahpu and Bomb.

O: I think my overall impression of disspointment is not a result of the beer but not living up the hype. Also, the competition is pretty stiff in the pepper stout category. I would love to give this another try and do a head to head with Bomb, Dark Lord, and Hunahpu.
