Poured from 750 ml bottle dated 3/2014 into snifter.

A: Pours motor oil black with small one finger mocha colored head that settled quickly to a thin ring. Some minimal lacing.

S: Sweet dark chocolate, charred toast, rich espresso. Just the slightest hint of peppermint leaves lingering in the background.

T: Follows the nose fairly closely with the biggest notes of rich dark chocolate and espresso. A little mint aftertaste but barely noticeable. Reminds me a good quality chocolate fudge.

M: Full bodied and average carbonation. There is a little oily texture to the finish.

O: Very nice stout. I was worried that the mint would be overpowering, but it compliments the other flavors nicely.

Enjoyed out of a 750mL brown bottle with a bottling date of 3/2014 marked on the side of the label. Though a bit off-topic, I have to say that for as small an operation as Perennial is, they sure do a great job of using sturdy, well-affixed labels and a clearly printed bottling date on their beers. Though minor details compared to the taste and quality of the beer, it shows that they exercise great care with every step of the beer making and selling process. But I digress--served in an oversized 33oz snifter.

Appearance (4.25) - Pours a viscous-looking motor oil black that requires a fairly aggressive pour to yield a finger of mocha colored head, consisting of predominantly fine bubbles with just a few larger bubbles from the pour. The foam shrinks to a film covering the entire body after a minute or so, and leaves zero lacing on the sides of the glass. Even after I begin drinking it, while the legs are pronounced, they don't leave anything but just an isolated dot or two of lace residue on the sides of the glass.

Smell (3.75) - The aroma is dominated by rich bittersweet chocolate characteristics and cocoa nibs alongside the roasty notes of burnt toast and medium char. However, as you smell it more and more, you get the herbal, minty characteristics from the dried peppermint leaves. Unlike the mint that one might typically associate with mint-flavored candy or chewing gum, this mint has a far more organic feel to it, which I suppose is to be expected from the use of dried peppermint leaves instead of anything like extract.

Taste (4.0) - Picks up right where the aroma left off, with the primary flavors being comprised of the semisweet chocolate and flavors of roasted malt and bitter roasted notes. At first blush, you might not even realize that this is infused with mint if you weren't paying attention. Though that's likely a good thing, since you don't want the mint to overpower the flavor. Once again, the peppermint come through in more of an herbal, even earthy vein than the kind of artificial profile in mint candy. In fact, the mint imparts zero sweetness whatsoever, relying on the chocolate malt and cacao to counteract the bitterness from the roasted flavor profiles.

Mouthfeel (4.0) - Full-bodied and low carbonation, with a slightly lingering viscous feel on the tongue that allows the bitterness and herbal characteristics to linger.

Overall (4.0), a nicely done beer that forms a good balance between the rich, roasted stout characteristics and the more herbal peppermint in a way that doesn't taste artificial. I will say this--in spite of being done well, it's just one of those styles that you have to be in the right mood to enjoy. It's more of a dessert beer than anything else, in the sense that it's probably best as a nightcap as well as the fact that it doesn't really pair well with savory food.
