The name "Devil’s Heart of Gold" comes from what they call the "Devil’s Cut". When a bourbon ages in a barrel, a portion of the bourbon evaporates - this is called the "Angel’s share". Another portion of the bourbon gets absorbed into the new oak barrel - this is called the "Devil’s cut". Therefore, the Heart of Gold beer aging in the barrel starts to absorb back some of the Devil’s Cut and hence the name "Devil’s Heart of Gold". We took our Heart of Gold and aged it in a Knob Creek 9-year old barrel from our friends at The Wine and Cheese Place in October 2011. The beer rested in these barrels for 7 months. 204 bottles will be released exclusively at The Wine and Cheese Place.

Classic medium brown pour, no head. Getting dark wheat, pecan, bourbon, dark fruit, honey, and molasses with a kiss of vanillins in the nose. Big caramel with pecan pie flavorings without sickly sweetness, take everything from nose plus subtle biscuit and oxidation underneath. Unique and super well done! Complex and inviting. Feel is boozy with sweeter malt, medium bodied, wheat runs through the whole body with waves of warm bourbon massaging everything. This is an excellent wheatwine

This one pours a golden dark brown color, with a small head, and a bit of lacing.

This one smells like honey, vanilla, stone fruit, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, and bourbon.

This is really excellent, and one of the more underrated entries in the Perennial barrel program. There's some sweetness, but the barrel, and it's drying qualities, are the star here, with some light fruitiness, caramel and bourbon, and oak spice, along with vanilla. There's also a light honey-like sweetness, with toffee, brown sugar, and even some maple candy.

This is medium bodied, with some pleasant warming booze, and a nice drinkability.

Wheatwines don't always stand up to the best barleywines, but this one really does the trick.

2019 bottle

Tan head. Murky brown color.

Very nice and warming bourbon. Smooth. Caramel, toffee, vanilla, oak. Dark, dried fruits. Apples. Pears.

Full bodied. Warming and smooth. This is a fantastic beer. Love the barrel flavor.

originally had 2017 vintage in December of 2018, reviewed for 2021 vintage consumed 1/16/22. poured from a 750mL bottle into a snifter. pours a lighter, almost see through cardboard brown but settles in the glass a murky dark maroon with the faintest lining of bubbles around the edge of the glass. aromas of whiskey, stale and damp cardboard, dark cherries. taste follows. it’s almost got an old ale taste going on. whiskey barrel gets more prominent as it warms. full, slick mouthfeel. definitely a sipper. better as it warms and opens up. a really great cold weather companion. a very underrated addition in perennial’s impressive catalogue.

Sample at Mikkeller Beer Celebration Copenhagen 2018, Red Session. Aroma has lots of dried fruits, mostly raisins, quite sugary and boozy. Taste is sweet and sugary with dried fruit notes but also acidic and boozy. Quite intense.
