an awesome ipa from perennial, one of the first in this style i have ever had or seen from them. something really different too. aged on top of louisville slugger baseball bats. i would think the bats would have to be raw, unvarnished. i can imagine lacquer would taste great in an ipa, but ive been wrong before. a nice slightly hazy bright orange glow to this one, with an inch of airy lacy white head from the tap. it smells fantastic, driven by citrus forward hops with plenty of oils and bitterness too. more pine than anticipated on the first sip though, the citrus really is more in the nostrils than on the tongue. more of a northwestern thing going on here, still oily and with some sweetness there, but pine seems to take over citrus. not sure if this has to do with baseball bats, which have to made out of some hardwood like hickory or something right? not pine. how much flavor could wood like that put in a fresh ipa like this? i think the answer is not all that much, there must be some woodiness to these hops though, and thats likely about it. plenty bitter on the back end, dry by the end too, and with excellent carbonation keeping the oily medium body feeling very much alive. really fun idea, gimmicky or not, and the quality and deliciousness of the final product cannot be debated. nice to see perennial tackle a style like this and have it be so good. well worth purchasing.
