From 10/09/13 notes. Had an 8 oz. pour of this on tap at Pony Bar HK in NYC. The bartender did a good job and warned me that this one was sour ahead of time, which I did not think it was supposed to be, but I decided to get it anyway. Not sure if this is infected or intential, but this is basically a sour stout, FYI.

a - Pours a deep brown color with one inch of light tan head and low carbonation evident.

s - Smells of roasted malts, some chocolate, coconut, sour dark fruits, toasted malts, currants, and sour red wine. Much like Plan B, smells like a mix of stout and sour dark fruits.

t - Taste of sour dark fruits, roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, toasted malts, and burnt malts.

m - Medium body and low carbonation. Pretty easy to drink, a slightly sour twinge to it.

o - Overall I had this right after Plan B by Perennial and it was very, very similar; this one basically just had more sour notes, especially in the taste. Basically the same level of enjoyment, would recommend trying one but passing on both for now. Bit disappointing.

Thanks to GRG1313 for sharing this one at his tasting.

Bottled 4/2013.

Pours an opaque super dark brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, and slightly sour fruit aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa and slightly sour dark fruit flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is definitely showing some infection issues but is still fairly drinkable in my opinion.

My bottle was one of the many 4/2013 bottles that was infected. I was really looking forward to this one and the infection basically turned this in to a bland sour stout.

The nose indicated the infection as a tart/sour presence dominated and completely detracted from any other aromas in the beer.

The palate was very tart with some roast, chocolate and dark fruit notes but no coconut at all.

Let’s be clear, this voyage was not so fantastic.  After loving a lot of what Perennial does, this missed the mark.  My thought is an infected bottle, due to the sourness, over carbonation, and lack of smooth sweet flavor others have described.  This was like spoiled milk, with roasted grains and excessive carbonation.  Here’s to hoping it was a fluke and not how this was intended.  For 17 bucks, I was quite disappointed.
