BA 17 is the barrel-aged version of our imperial mint chocolate stout. It's a blend of select barrels of our imperial stout, which have been aging in Rittenhouse Rye Barrels for more than a year before being infused with cocoa nibs, dried peppermint, and Madagascar vanilla beans. Rich fudge and brownie batter flavors meld with layers of caramel and oak vanillin, all brightened by a measured wave of cooling mint. On the finish there's a subtle hint of maple and dried tobacco. BA 17 is a decadent dessert in its own right and also pairs wonderfully with ice cream.

Poured into a tulip glass from a 750ml bottle.
A vigorous pour yields a pretty viscous oily liquid that yields a very thin dark tan almost brown head. The head is nice and dense like an espressos foam. A nice swirl of the glass kicks up a thin head once again that recedes pretty quickly but is very attractive.
Aroma is quite impressive. I really didn't know what to expect with the addition of the barrel-aging. Starts off with the mint chocolate chip type of aroma. Nice fresh mint with some dark cocoa notes. Some sweetness from the nibs is perceived. The mint and the cocoa nibs play very well together. The aroma is pretty amazing. I can't get my nose out of this brew. Now comes the barrel aging notes. It is not overwhelming or overly sweet in the nose but the barrels add a nice molasses and caramel sweetness that sort of wraps itself around the cocoa and mint notes in the nose.
Flavor is pretty impressive as well. I have to say. Im from St. Louis so maybe I'm biassed but the Perennial crew is really killing it with these BA releases. First off all the mouthfeel on this thing is ridiculous. Silky and smooth and quite oily. It coats the mouth completely with great complex flavors and the barrel plus the high ABV adds a nice warming boozy heat to the beer overall. Now in terms of flavor the brew starts off with nice minty freshness that lasts all through the flavor profile of the brew. The mint notes are perceived immediately mixed in with the nice dark cocoa notes that add some slight bitterness and some sweetness. These two notes of mint and cocoa play very well with each other and neither is too overwhelming. Now, the whiskey notes add a dimension and flavor profile to the brew that I wasn't sure what to expect. Turns out the whiskey notes are not overwhelming like some other barrel-aged beers can be. The whiskey adds some nice vanilla sweetness and woody oak notes with some mild caramel sweetness to it that sort of envelops the notes of cocoa and mint and play together so well. The more the beer warms there is some slight roasty notes that can be perceived from the darker malts. There is also a nice heat from the brew. I can see how some might not like how the mint sort of freshens this brew the whole way through but I like how it keeps a balance between the cocoa and whiskey notes.

This one pours a fairly dark black, with a small head, and a little bit of lacing.
This smells a bit like Thin Mints, liquified and put into a barrel. There's lots of chocolate, a bit of oak, earthy and sweet mint, and a hint of rye whiskey on the nose.
This is quite intense, and ultimately not something I'm going to actively seek out, as I don't really love mint in beer much. But I can still appreciate that it's well made, and I definitely did still enjoy it. The barrel makes this a drinkable beer, and tamps down the heavy duty mint character from the base. The oak gives off a nice spicy character, and the rye adds a touch of spice. There seems to be much more chocolate- or at least the ratio of flavors seems to swing more towards chocolate than mint, which is A-OK with me.
This is pretty thick and rich, with a normal, lower level of carbonation for the style. It seems to coat both the glass and the mouth.
This is definitely a cool beer, but it's quite intense, and should be enjoyed in 3-4 oz pours.
