Finishing off my Firkin visit with a nice bit of Barry Rye, something I missed out on earlier in my beer-drinking career. It pours a dark midnight ruby topped by a half-finger of ashen khaki foam. The nose comprises blackberry, light cocoa, rich caramel, toasted rye bread, light booze, and a hint of dry wood. The taste brings in more of the same, focusing on lightly tart blackberries adrift in a sea of chocolatey rye. The body is a hefty medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a slightly syrupy feel. Overall, a pretty solid beer. 'Nuff said.

some have told me this is one of the best beers theyve ever had, and although our bottle was almost a year old, and probably has faded a bit, its hard to see it in that level. its a murky and dense brown color, maybe the faintest hint of berry purple to it, lots of yeast sediment, and a half an inch of dirty white head. the nose is promising though, lots of real fresh blackberry, sweet and tangy and ripe and juicy and dominant. rye malt seems subtle in the nose by comparison, and the alcohol is there too. the flavors seem a bit muddles together, not as layered and artfully built as i was expecting form perennial. bunches of rye and chocolate malt make up the base, but the spice from it never really comes through, neither does the roast, and im left with a rather plain malt flavor for what im supposed to be drinking here. the berries are way less forward than they are in the nose, barely there in the finish with their summer sweetness. almost jam-like rather than fresh picked, but their influence in the taste is slight. i expect this has faded since the bottle was fresh. i still like the beer, but it comes across a little messy, and i dont think is up to the standards perennial has set for themselves. i will say that the idea is perfect, and a little more rye and bubbles would make it that much better. i imagine it being rockstar on tap. will try again soon and update.
