Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Rye Ale fermented on local blackberries. Another music-inspired beer, Barry Rye is the latest addition to the Perennial playlist. It’s very balanced, with notes of rye spiciness and blackberry juiciness – kind of like some of Barry’s soul hits from the 70s.

Minimal, almost non-existant foam, but very aggressive carbonation bubbles. Color is dark black with purple tint. Don't think grape soda color as it is just a hint of purple. Just a hint of rye and a bit of molasses in the aroma, but a bit more of the blackberry comes out. The aroma is actually subdued, but I don't like overly sweet in my fruit beers, so I don't view that as a big negative. The flavor is really more on thetart blackberry side. The aftertaste showcases the spiciness of the rye and makes an interesting interplay with the tartness of the blackberries. The mouthfeel is highly carbonated and slightly oily.I appreciate the daring of Perrenial's beers, but this is one of their efforts that doesn't have me clank ring for more.

On tap at the Green Lady, quick review from written notes.

Dark reddish brown with an attractive ruby glint in the light. Thick head of sticky tan foam on top with a creamy surface texture. Drippy ring of lace around the edges of the glass.

Roast malt aroma, fairly subtle.

More roast malt in the taste with a subtle undercurrent of tart blackberry that lingers in the finish and aftertaste. The fruit character is light and well integrated. Medium bodied and smooth with a light carb level. Easy to drink, its a fairly interesting beer.
