Opening with massive aromas of fresh citrus and tropical fruits, Corrosion hits with a firm hop presence accentuated by an upfront acidity. Kettle-soured before finishing as an IPA, Corrosion is uniquely balanced between the world of sours and the world of hops.

"Unfiltered", eh? Hmm. It became a challenge to me as I like clarity in my AIPAs! Following my Crack! of the vent, I went with a slow, gentle C=Line Glug just to present a challenge to myself. It didn't quite work, but that was okay. It formed two-plus fingers of fizzy. foamy, rocky, bone-white head with limited retention that quickly fell to wisps. Color was a hazy Yellow-Gold (SRM = 4 - 5). Nose had a tart, lemony funkiness. Hmm. This was NOT IAW its current style. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was more tart than sour, very fruity ranging from tropical to citrusy. I was not getting much in the way of hop bitterness. Instead, the emphasis was on the tartness resulting from its "kettle-souring". Finish was tart and dry. Fair dinkum, but it was NOT an AIPA. They need to CANsider ChANging its style. YMMV.

Finger plus of bright white foam, full range of bubble sizes give sit visual depth but there’s hardly any retention, and the lacing is like a crashing wave, big then gone. The liquid appears more murky than hazy but the yellow coloration has a day-glo depth which captures the light, random beads form against the glass walls and spill upwards. The nose immediately slaps you with sour notes, vinous with white grapefruit, pulped lemon citrus notes, penetrating star fruit, pineapple, kumquat to pomegranate, lean with no extra flesh, peppercorns, sourdough crusts, corn husks, minerally, for as deep as it penetrates your nostrils not that long lived. Medium-bodied, the sourness gives it a steel beam feel and ensures that everything stays in its preordained place. The lemon, grapefruit pith starts drying out the palate quickly. Minerally earth and dried grass jump into the fray, the kind of bread crumbs you’d feed to pigeons. Desiccated pineapple, papaya, star fruit, nectarine flavors, more raw energy than juiciness. Then a big burst of quinine. Too much sour, not enough IPA.

pours a cloudy straw gold with a solid-y head

aroma is a tart beer with slight hops

flavor is nice, lots of tart to this but also tons of hop notes. a really nice full beer with a lot going on

an interesting take on a beer, trying to make a Sour IPA is interesting and definitely something i can get into. I LOVE sour candy/flavor and I LOVE bitter beer so it's a match made in heaven. enjoyable beer, I'll crush these 4 16oz cans and wish i could homebrew a better sour IPA

Poured from an undated 16 oz. can into Cape May pint glass. The can release was in mid-March so it's getting close to two months old. It pours a hazy, golden-orange with a thin, ecru-colored head that dissipated almost immediately leaving a thin sheen of creamy lacing. The nose is rather subdued with lemon peel, light tangerine, a touch of caramel malt, and subtle floral hops. The taste is quite unusual: it opens with sour lemon and lime but with a dose of fairly bitter hops. Unfortunately, Cape May hasn't listed the hop bill on the can or its website. Then, there is an unexpected cracker taste. It finishes with the sour citrus and bitter hops battling for supremacy. It features a surprisingly full, creamy mouth feel with pleasant carbonation, and the 6.5% ABV gives it substance without distracting. A second pour is not a problem. Overall, this brew is something between a Berliner Weiss and an IPA. I was a bit skeptical at first - particularly with the subdued nose - but it really works. It's tangy and flavorful and would make an excellent summer beach beer and would accompany a burger or grilled sausage nicely.

The cloudy golden orange colored beer pours out into a Duvel glass with a 1/2” white head that recedes to a ring and thin cover on the liquid without leaving lacing on the sides of the glass. Sipping creates scattered patches and legs of lacing. By mid-way through the beer there’s no foam left at all.

The aromas include some lemon, some tropical fruits and hints of some stone fruits along with a bit of earthiness.

The flavors are a bit different from what is expected from the nose. They do include some orange and lemon up front. There’s also the expected light tropical fruits (e.g., mango, papaya) and a bit of stone fruits (e.g., apricot, peach). In addition there’s some sweetness from the malt along with a hint of grapefruit and some earthy bitterness. But then there’s also some light tartness here that stays in the background and helps to balance both the sweetness and the bitterness so that all three seem to form a background triangle of co-equal flavors which support all the others.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied and crisp with the active moderate carbonation. The finish begins as the smooth malt sweetness begins to fade, followed by the fruity flavors. As they fade the tartness and slightly earthy bitterness remain behind to close out the ending in the back of the palate.

I’m enjoying this beer and finding quite drinkable and has an interesting flavor profile. The tartness remains in the background but is always there to help the bitterness balance the sweetness. I think I’ll be getting another of these when I see it again since I’d like another opportunity to explore the flavor/aroma profile. It’s interesting to see the effects of having an IPA flavor profile with that enhanced tartness incorporated. Since it’s difficult to rate an hybrid with a particular style in mind my scores reflect the expectation for one or the other. For example the head is not what one would expect in an IPA but it would be fine in a kettle soured beer. So take the numbers with a grain of salt.

Cape May Brewing Co. "Corrosion Sour IPA"
gravity poured cask @ the Yards Real Ale Invitational on 30 April 2017
"American wild ale dry hopped with Mosaic, El Dorado and Idaho 7"

Notes: Cloudy golden body looks like a glass of orange juice. Thin collar of bright white with spotty lacing. No residual head retention beyond the initial pour. The aroma is tropical fruity with powdered sugar. In the flavor there are notes of peach, apricot, red grapefruit, orange, blueberry, mango, papaya, pine and earth, pear, watermelon, and lemon - but they're mostly all very subdued and kind of muddled, they don't really stand out, and you have to look for them. The flavor is tart, but not too tart, with some chalkiness and a moderate bitterness that leads to a dry, chalky and acidic finish with some residual blueberry. Light-medium in body and delicately crisp. Surprisingly good. Nicely fruity, refreshing, and not too tart it's highly drinkable. My only picking point is that it's not really bitter, and at 5.75% ABV it can't really be labeled an IPA. I understand why they're doing that, because it's very hoppy, but it's a little misleading.

Update based on a fresh can: It has better lacing than the cask did, so I've bumped the score from 3.75 to 4; and the can is listed at 6.5% abv which is definitely in IPA range. Also, it's more bitter, or at least bitter enough for a sour IPA. This might be the first time I've liked the regular version over a cask but at the same time they've had time to refine it a bit. I'm loving it and also boosted the overall rating from a 4 to a 4.25 - worth trying to be sure!
