Formerly Saison
If an IPA, a Wheat Beer and a Belgium Double had a baby; it would be called a Saison. This is a refreshing, medium to strong fruity & spicy ale with a distinctive yellow-orange color, highly carbonated, well hopped, and dry with a quenching acidity. Originally brewed at the end of the cool season to last through the warmer months before refrigeration was common. It had to be sturdy enough to last for months but not too strong to be quenching and refreshing in the summer. We brew ours with coriander and lots of Saaz hops.

On-tap at the brewery
Pours a yellow in color with a foamy, soapy bone white head. Great retention as it falls slowly and leaves some clingy lace on the inside of the glass.
The nose is of cereal grains and alcohol. Clean, cracked wheat. Light earthy hops. Saaz and hallertau, is my guess.
Grassy, earthy hops roll over the tongue with some sweet cereal malt through the middle. A little white pepper and coriander peek through here and there The finish is a blend of slightly sweet malt, bitter earthy hops, and booze.
Medium body with a bit of a boozy finish.
This is a pretty spot on example of the style but lacks the depth to make this elite.

Way more of a Berliner taste than the usual funky bitterness of a saison. Better than I thought it was going to be.

Pours a very cloudy, dark straw color that's nearly opaque with ripe banana colored edges. Two finger frothy white head that's reminiscent of a nitro pour. Very good retention, only slowly settling into a thick, lasting cap that coats the glass with sheets of soapy lacing on the way down. Good head retention but the color is a little darker/cloudier than I prefer.
Strong spice and yeast presence in the nose that reminds me more of a Belgian wit and German wheat beer hybrid. Lots of clove and pepper along with lots of bread/yeast, bubblegum, banana and subtle citrus. Slightly floral farmhouse presence with hay, grass and straw. Also some lighter notes of apple and pear that compliment the strong yeast notes.
Full body with flavor profile that's similar to the aroma. A little more rustic/earthy but tastes a lot like a german hefe or Belgian wit beer. Lots of zesty, peppery spice up front with clove, ginger, coriander and white pepper followed by earthy hops, bread, banana and crisp citrus. Strong yeast character mid palate with hints of sourdough bread, bubblegum, apple, pear and banana. There also lingering tart citrus sweetness in the finish with hints of orange and lemon pith. Slightly mineral along with grassy hop bitterness. Spice and earthy notes remind me of a saison but other than that it's more of a wheat beer flavor profile. Not so true to style but still packs a lot of flavor. Complex, thirst quenching and pretty easy to drink. Nice spring/summer beer.
