A – A caramel-orange body with a nice heaping pile of wheat bubbles that looks just glorious, even if it dissipates somewhat sooner than I might like and leaves little lacing—probably owing to the high ABV.
S – Very interesting smelling, really you don’t see it coming. I would have thought the smell was going to be much more intense. It is somewhat caramely and mild with not quite dark fruits, more like medium-fruits, it’s earthy and somewhat bready as well, and it has a beautiful clove and peppery spicy aspect to it; also, dare I say there are some hops involved here? It is very clean too, my first reaction was that there was a little bit of hay-funk going on in here but it really was just the blending of smells. It’s a plus really. Just smells unbelievably good.
T – This is up there with the best tasting beers that I have ever had the pleasure of imbibing. It’s funny, how you know with the very first sip whether or not what your are drinking is a truly great beer, it possesses a quality that instantaneously identifies itself—almost a magic element to it—and this has that. This beer just screams quality, is so incredibly complex, and compulsively drinkable. It has a toasted bready flavor to it, steely caramel, unsweetened figs, tobacco, clove, big pepper, slight hops, very mild raisins. And it only gets better as it warms.
M – The mouthfeel is surprisingly lighter than I would have expected, but it just just about perfect as well. If it was heavier it wouldn’t work as well. The steady carbonation gives it a creaminess that is just delightful.
O – This is one of the best beers that I have ever had and surely one of the best beers on the face of the earth. I would highly recommend this to just about anyone from a novice beer drinker like myself to a seasoned veteran. Bravo St. Bernardus, bravo.
