25.4 oz bomber poured into chalice
born on: 08.03.18 printed on cap -- i think ... it was hard to read
drank on: 9/28/13
L: murky brown, cloudy --> slight bit of amber/orange when held up to light; minimal head, less than 1/3 inch of tan foam, pretty dark tan; no lacing or stick; for a Belgian, not much percolation
S: apple pie, dates & figs, pumpkin, cantaloupe; fruity but backed by some serious darker malt which does present a raisin and licorice note; sweet grain; cherries ... it gets very wine-like with a pronounced alcohol note -- not vodka but definitely wine
T: follows the aroma closely with a general dark fruity note -- prunes,d ates, grapes, pumpkin, muted/sour grapes (like wine). as it warms, it gets good and sweet. dark dried cherries ... it really opens up as it warms. ABV is perfectly hidden; while you can smell alcohol, all you can taste is beer.
F: full Belgian treatment -- i wish every brew in every style had this weight and carbonation, and sure, i'm stupid for saying that, but my gosh. perfection.
O: it's not the raisin/licorice bomb I'd come to believe it would be, which is fantastic for me -- i *hate* raisins and licorice. in fact, this brew is about as easy to handle as most dubbels, and it tastes a lot like Ommegang Abbey Ale. it's a bit darker than some other Belgians I've tried, but darkness comes in a nice sweet form (grapes, cherries more often than raisins/licorice)
ABV is no joke! as strong a 10% as I've come across ... a bomber of this is a full session.
