It's widely known that this is good so I'll keep my review brief.
Appearance is actually kind of gross. The head is a bunch of giant bubbles like a sink full of dish soap, which quickly pop and leave a sickly bit of swirling foam on the top. The beer itself is a cloudy dark brown. As a beer fan I know this is still probably going to be good, but I had a few moments of doubt as I was pouring it. A pretty large amount of chunky sediment on the bottom as well. I know it won't affect the taste, but it really does look kind of nasty overall.
Smell is where things turn around. Incredibly rich, bread/pastry aromas, toffee/caramel, with a hint of "dark fruits". Slightly present is a touch of alcohol heat. Amazingly sweet, almost candy-like aroma. I was a little grossed out on pouring this, but once I sniffed it I was hooked.
Taste is more of the same. Hearty bread and biscuit tastes, maple syrup, caramel, some fruit. It almost tastes like a cake donut in liquid form. There's a moderate burn which feels totally appropriate and balanced given the sweet, desert-like quality. I would give this a 5 but technically it was not quite as good as Rochefort 10, so I have to mark it down slightly. But really, this is an amazingly delicious treat.
Mouth feel is creamy, almost like a shake. Just enough carbonation to give a bit of bite on the entry. Again, super rich without being too thick, and dare I say it, decadent.
Overall this one is a classic for a reason. If you haven't tried it before, you're doing yourself a disservice. I waited years to buy it due to the price. It was worth every penny!
