Had this awesome Quad on tap at the new "Grill next door" in
Haverhill, Ma. next door to the Dalton family "One Stop" where
they've been known for years for carrying some of the best beer selections in the area. Having 36 beers on tap is like walking into
a candy store. St. Bernardus Abt 12 is on tap and sold in the store
but getting this on tap was more than a treat. This is silky, mysterious, dark
delicious brew that is hard to compare anything to as it is in a class all its own. At 10.50% you need to go easy on this but I could easily drink a growler of this beauty. Mixing a well balanced
carbonation with sweet dark spicey clove and slightly dry end to finish makes this one of my new favorites at the bar, thanks Matt Lonardo, co-owner for this find!

A - Pours an opaque ruby-brownish color with a thick two fingers of frothy off-white head. The retention on the head is very good and leaves behind lots of lace on the glass.

S - Aroma is a mix of some dark fruit sweetness and also some more sugar sweetness. Some malt and spices make up a backbone to the nose. Touch of yeast and some lighter fruits.

T - Starts off with some building dark fruit flavors and some deep caramel malts. Little bit of spice in the background. Through the middle some sweeter grape flavor comes through alongside some cherry flavor. The finish has a blend of dark fruit, some roasted malt, and a touch of apple/cherry flavor that lingers nicely.

M - Medium bodied with moderate lively carbonation. Feels really smooth and crisp, even with a lot of flavor hitting the palate. Finish is just a touch dry and very nice.

D - Very drinkable. Lots of flavors that stay really well balanced, and also don't make the beer feel too heavy. The 10.5 abv here really stays in the background and makes it almost a bit dangerous.

Best Before 7/11/11

St. Bernardus Abt 12 pours a deep murky crimson red. Glowing ruby highlights illuminate small floating particles when held to the light. A one finger airy beige head formed on the pour and slowly fell to a cap of creaminess leaving some spotty lacing on the way down. Has the look like the good, big Belgians. When you look you know it's going to be packed with flavor. Murky and dark like it's trying to hide it's secret before they spring out on you.

Aroma is big on the dark fruits including plums, prunes, raisins, and figs. I believe there's even some bing cherries in there, not many, but there are a few. Doughy malts are all over the background. A touch of sugary sweetness and slight earthy mustiness. Very nice.

Big tongue coating amount of doughy and bready malt hit right away. not as much of the dark fruit on the tongue as in the aroma. It's there but not as distinct and comes along more mid palate and finishes things off. Figs, prunes, and raisins are the fruit present on the tongue and mix very nicely with some candy like sweetness and a touch of milk chocolate. Earthy dusty yeastiness and a very welcomed alcohol spice add to the complexities.

The mouthfeel of this beer is outstanding. It actually seems light and airy up front but becomes medium-full with a superb velvety texture. Alcohol warmth on the swallow. Great mouthfeel.

This is an easy beer to put away. Far to easy for a beer this large but it is something I could probably only drink a couple glasses of in a sitting just because of the sheer size and complexities.

An exceptional quad from an exceptional brewery. Loaded with complexities and the only alcohol present comes in as another added layer of spiciness. Only gets better and better as it warms.
