Brown with ruby highlights in the light. Off white fluffy/bubbly head about a 1.5 finger. Not much lacing to speak of.

Lots of malt, dark fruit(raisins), and alcohol in the nose.

Lots of dark fruit and spice going on in the taste.

Lots of carb and med body but still goes down pretty smoothly regardless of the carbonation.

For some reason people like to say this is better than Westvleteren 12, and I don't understand that at all. Still a fabulous bier.

On-Tap into Goblet

Appears a deep, dark brown with a nice finger of off-white head. Smells of caramel and malt with slight hints of fig and nuts. Tastes just like it smells with a smooth malty finish that leaves a nice coating on your mouth. Despite the high alcohol content, the bite is masked by the richness of this Quad. A great beer overall. It's pretty expensive here in the States so I'm not sure if I'll pay to drink this again, but I certainly wouldn't oblige if one were offered to me.

Poured on-tap and served in a chalice, the beer is an opaque, rich, blood-brown coloring with a slight filmy sparsely coating the surface. Aromas are rich and complex, with notes of licorice, molasses, and slight pepper and spicing. The flavors are rich and deep, with a blend of plum, date, and raisin on a crisp, well carbonated body. The alcohol gives a nod here and there, highlighting the palate. Biscuit and bready flavors throughout balance the other characteristics, and the overall malt profile is complex and delicious. At any given time you can get notes of caramel, toffee, molasses, old world fruits, and even some buttery tones. The aftertaste is creamy sweet and rich, almost like cake batter. The finish, remarkably, is kept light by the carbonation, and leaves the palate fairly clean. Great beer.

Thanks to Beerdy for this beer! Thanks Brien!

poured into a tulip glass.

Appearance: murky brown bodied beer that has a red hue to it when held up to light. Easy 3 fingers of cream/khaki colored head. The head looks thick, creamy, and rich. Really thick lacing is left all over the glass with this slowely fading head.

Smell: I gotta say that you dont even need to smell the beer to get notes of belgian yeast, dark fruits and sweet malts! Wow! When you do put your nose into this beer you get a giant malt profile that smells really sweet.

Taste: Lots of dark fruits upfront and a nice malt profile to compliment. I get a lot of figs and mixed with the malt it almost reminds me of a fig newton. Some caramel, toffee, brown sugar and candied sugar. Mid palate you get a really decent spiciness that is mixed with a little boozey burn. The finish has just a little bit of bitterness and more dark fruits. Decent complexity from this beer.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer with moderate carbonation. It got decent drinkability for a beer of this style and one thats 10%. Its just a little bit thin, but not too bad.

Overall: Really solid Quad! I did not think that ABT 12 would stand up to the likes of Westy 12 and Rochefort 10, but it does. This beer is really close to both beers, but its just a little rough around the edges compared to the the other two beers; very minor differences I gotta say. In other words...ABT 12 is an easy to get Westy 12 without all the hype/rarity surrounding it. Just like Rochefort 10, but I like Rochefort 10 just a little bit better. If you like Quads don't pass this beer up!

Corked & caged 750ml from a great BA (thanks Sean) split with a mate into Sam Adams Perfect Pint glasses.

A: Hazed, turbid brown with hints of gold...sediment apparent, though the beer is opaque...off-white head leaves behind some good lacing.

S: Tons of malty sweetness, green apples, apple pie, brown sugar, malty breadyness, hints of spice and clove, currant, other dark fruit, alcohol.

T: Tons of caramel and toffee, hints of phenolic notes, apple crisp drizzled with molasses, earthy carob, spices, dark fruit & apples, alcohol burn.

MF: Medium mouthfeel, rich, slight dryness on finish.

O: Nice, rich, malty sweet beer, very enjoyable.

750mL bottled poured into a snifter
13.07.16 are the numbers on the cork

A: Pours a hazy dark mahogany with just under 2 fingers of very light khaki colored head, which takes a good amount of time to dissipate down to a thick film that remains throughout the drink.  Leaves a decent amount of lacing.

S: Clove and peppery spice, mild dark fruit aromas not as strong as I anticipated.  The whole aroma is fairly mild, but pleasant.

T: Big dark fruit and candied sugar sweetness.  Lots of clove and white and black peppery spice. More spice than many quads (in a good way).  There is also some caramel malt sweetness, and bread/biscuit flavors at one point.  As it warms more of the dark fruit flavors come out....plum and raisin.  There also is an alcohol presence which works nicely as a balancing agent, rather than being dominant or overwhelming.  This beer starts off strong and only gets better as it warms with more sweetness coming out to balance out the big spice presence.  Really an excellent tasting beer.

M/D:Pretty heavily carbonated but still able to remain relatively smooth, and gets smoother as it warms in the glass. Does a really nice job of keeping the ABV in check and warms the body quite nicely. Very good drinkability for the ABV and massive flavor profile.

O: Overall this is an excellent beer.  Great palate profile and surprising drinkability.  I do think Rochefort 10 is better, but this is great in its own right.  Plus it's widespread availability and reasonable price make it a worthy regular in my beer rotation, and definitely a must try for those who have not yet had the pleasure of drinking it.

Poured into a Dogfish pint glass. Back label says best before end 31 05 16 which means drink by May 31st, 2016.

A- Pours a deep, dark brown that's nearly opaque and has a full inch of head that retains very well. Not a whole lot of lacing.

S- Toasty malt in addition to rich Belgian yeast brings about notes of chocolate and banana.

T- A quick flash of wet cardboard that thankfully dies away after multiple sips to reveal the dark fruit characteristics. A bit of a metallic taste as well but not very boozy at all. I feel the alcohol in my gut and head before I feel it on my tongue. Definitely not a quaffer, but it's easy to drink considering the ABV. A little bit of a capsaicin burn comes around after a while which is a bit surprising but welcome. Notes of raisin, banana and pear.

M- A bit prickly but overall smooth. Medium-high carbonation.

O- Takes some time to get into but, once the glass starts to empty, the complexity and deliciousness is fully realized.

On tap @ Het Elfde Gebal, Amsterdam into a St Bernardus Trappist Glass.

A deep ebony appearance, but when held to the light of a candle it becomes translucent and the whole glass glows deep burnished maroon. A gentle carbonation runs through the liquid. The head, when first poured, is half a finger of ivory foam, which quickly settles down to a thin layer.

Aroma is not pronounced, soft and benign - hints of sweet dark fruit and fails to prepare you for your first taste. Complexity, initially hard to pin down what's going on. Its sweet, soft and warm, the alcohol is here but melded with deep malts and a tumble of fruit on the tongue; figs, cherry, lexia raisin, come licorice and spice perhaps. Its is leavened out with bitter chocolate and coffee, finished with lacing of Fruit Salad sweets. There's other elements I can't describe but it is certainly an experience and highly recommended.

Excellent Quad! Belgium's finest! I have had Trappist's and Abbey beers and this one does not let you down.

Pours a nice head, great aroma and an excellent taste. Carbonation presents a good mouth feel and the 10% is hidden VERY well.

Easily a top Belgium beer!

Bottom line: If your a beer snob....this is a must have!
