Aroma: More malt than the average strong ale. Some spicy yeast. Some fruity esters which are mostly prunes and some black cherry. Not as sweet as most others per this style. Some mild brown malt flavor. alcohol is a bit floral and somewhat piney. A good bit of cinnamon. Definitely a good dose of hops.
Appearance: Dark brown. Cannot see through to the other side even when held up to a bright light. Moderate light brown head. Decent retention. Moderate lacing.
Taste: I must say I'm a bit disappointed. Light and watery. Not much fruitiness, a good amount of hot alcohol. Some prunes, black cherry and cinnamon. Hops are floral and pine. Some malt flavor.
Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Lightly astringent. Watery, not oily at all. Little carbonation. Very warming.
Overall: Too much hot alcohol in the aroma and taste. Flavor is ok, not overly sweet which is good, but not enough flavor, a bit bland. Very surprised, perhaps this bottle was tainted?
Notes: Fresh by 6/28/2016, drank on 2/2/2012

Appearance: Great ruby red body. Head had funky, huge bubbles...
Smell: Dark fruit, cinnamon, anise and clove, noticeable alcohol scent
Taste: Dates, figs, honey, a hint of caramel; bitterness at the finish is overshadowed with the alcohol presence. Complex yet balanced for the style
Mouthfeel: Thick and chewy, glass smooth with a rich malt sugar characteristic playing throughout
Overall: A very good beer, but good have been better with a decent, rich head (perhaps my 12 ounce bottle was old or my glass dirty, but I'd never seen such large, glass-thin carbonation bubbles - virtually no head at the finish and no lacing or rings on the glass). Otherwise, the taste elements were pretty much spot-on for a quad.

Poured from a 330ml bottle into a pint glass.
A- Pours a murky walnut colour with foamy beige head. Head dissipates quickly leaving good lacing.
S- Amazingly complex. Banana flambe, rum, cocoa, alcohol comes through but in balance with sweeter smells. Incredible.
T- Strong banana notes with amazing balance and a pleasantly bitter aftertaste.
M- Good carbonation glides nicely on palate. Not as heavy as I was expecting.
O- An incredible beer overall, as I was expecting from the beer that has almost an identical recipe to Westvleteren 12.
A little tidbit I just learned. St. Bernardus was once a contract brewer for westvleteren and the abt 12 is based heavily on the 12, is it possible that if westvleteren wasn't so hard to get it might rate right around St. Bernardus? Food for thought.
