Poured into a chalice. Pours dark brown with a finger length tan head that slowly dissipates. Toffee, raisin, date, fig, and some alcohol are present in the aroma. It's very pleasing. The flavors of bread, toffee, yeast, and dark fruits explode in the mouth on the first sip. The alcohol taste is there, but it's not overpowering. However, the alcohol taste becomes more apparent the warmer it gets. The mouthfeel is full and the carbonation is abundant. Overall, this is a most excellent example of a quad that is relatively easy to find. I recommend this one.

11.2oz bottle poured into a goblet. Best by 9/27/16.

A: Bottle was a bit of a gusher. One finger pillowy off-white head w/some sediment floating on top. Body is a gorgeous deep ruby red. There was quite a bit of sediment despite the fact that I left a solid 1/4” at the bottom of the bottle. Head was fully lasting and lacing excellent.

S: Bready yeast and dark fruits. Mostly plum, currant and raisin with a little grape and a hint of cherry. Some nice toasted caramel malt.

T: Huge flavor and complexity. Wonderful balance. Starts sweet with earthy yeast and fruit. Lovely breadiness and clove. Some of the caramel malt comes through. Tons of figs, raisins, plums, and the like. Finishes more acidic than the start with a little fusel alcohol.

M: Fizzy carbonation. Medium body. Finishes chalky with a moderate dose of warming alcohol burn. Drinkability is surprisingly high for such a big complex beer.

O: One of the finest quads in existence. Easy to drink but that’s not really the point with a beer like this. Love it.

Poured to Duvel tulip the beer arrives a rich deep dark brown color with a nice 3 finger white billowing head with supreme retention and lacing. Looks phenomenal. As poured the aroma fills the room with a nice variety of dark fruits, roasted malts, molasses, and bread. No hint of higher abv. The flavor builds on the pleasant nose and is a delight. very thick and creamy and rich from the get go but incredibly approachable. The sweetness of the malt is most prominent at first but mellows quickly as a light bitterness enters. The dark fruit gives way to hints of raisins, molasses, figs, and liquorice and is very nice. Finishes creamy and smooth with a lingering sweetness. Full bodied and well carbonated. Overall, this is a treat. I can't wait to purchase more to age and enjoy later. Highly recommended.

It flows out of the bottle into my favorite pub glass and I'm picking up all the dried fruit aromas. Figs, raisins, prunes... plus some molasses.

The head that forms is fluffy and tinted ivory. The pinhead sized bubbles dance in the glass and give it a creamy appearance. It's thick and substantial.

The taste is somewhat sweet and very satisfying. A little heavy, but in a good way. You definitely know it's got a kick of high gravity. It's reminiscent of a fine barleywine.

Definitely going on my rotation, but it's a little pricey... you get what you pay for, though.

Appearance: Abt 12 pours a cloudy dark-red raisin colour, complete with a big, fluffy, white head that shrinks quickly and audibly down to a thin cap.

Smell: I smell lots of bread, along with the usual quadrupel dark fruits - in this case the raisins are very distinct - and there's a healthy dose of booze here too.

Taste: Abt 12 tastes quite sweet. I think I got liquorice at the start. The brown sugar is eminent, and the figs are there too. I don't taste the raisins, but at the back I do get a general sense of the slight bitters of dark dried fruits, and the sweet excesses of Grandma's naughty Christmas cake.

Mouthfeel: The beer feels very big and full, and the carbonation is healthy too, drawing from me belches and smiles aplenty as I look forward to bringing the glass back to my appreciating mouth.

Overall: This was the beer that introduced me to quadrupels. I think I have it ranked ever so slightly behind the Rochefort Trappistes 10 and comfortably behind the Westvleteren 12, but that's because those beers are phenomenal. The Trappist quads set a ridiculous standard, and Abt 12 is a brilliant beer.
