Simply one of the finest beers one can have. The smiling monk on the label is truly what you'll be, only hopefully with more hair and the actual goblet in hand.

It is a heavy beer for sure. Pours out like the quadrupel it is, but has a bubbly, frothy white head that one should let dissipate before enjoying.

It is a deep mahogany color and has a tangy, sweet, almost BBQ smell with a strong after scent of the 10% alcohol that resides in the beer.

When drinking, it should be a little warm, and is a heavy, syrupy mouthfeel that is pretty well carbonated for a quad. The taste is a strong, sweetness (almost Cherry-Coke like) with a winey, port sort of after taste. As it warms up it really mellows out into a sweet beer with a malty after taste, and is an adventure in and of itself. A well carbonated beer that has a world class taste.

I bought a 12 oz bottle and drank it like a wine; poured it into Bordeaux glass and everything. I love doing that with "bigger beers." You stick your nose in there and really get a sense of the different aromas. This one in particular is incredible.

Each whiff provides a perfect blend of fruity and spicy notes including bananas, cherries, and plums. The “quad/alcohol” aroma is clearly present but not overpowering. It balances very well with the fruit and rich malt flavors.

The beer is a dark red-maroon like color. For those of us who love dark Belgians, the complexion is flawless. The Abt 12 has a nice big head, which usually settles relatively quickly. Depending on the style of beer, specifically with Belgians, I’ll usually wait for the head to settle; I want get all the good stuff, none of those foam bubbles for me.

The first taste is the amazing. Going back to that whole wine thing, I can’t help but savior every sip. I take my time with it. Not so much that these things aren’t cheap, but mostly because they’re so complex.

Pretty much what you smell is what you get; A lot of dark rich flavors including cherries, raisins, bready caramel notes, and that great unique Belgian yeast flavor, all blending together to make an absolutely incredible beer.

Out of a bottle purchased at the Hop Heads bar this beer was a cloudy, dark chestnut color with a towering head of foam. The retention was impressive and the lacing in fine bands with fishnets in between. The aroma was complex and appealing. I detected bready malt, caramel malt, Belgian yeast, dark fruits, some bananas and spices. The flavors were equally complex and yet complimentary. All the same notes from the nose were apparent in the taste with a perfect core of caramel and chocolate malt. Spicy and punchy without being hot, I thought it was an excellent example of balance and finesse. Dried fruits and plums became more pronounced as it warmed up and the hops presence was just enough to counterbalance the malts. The mouthfeel was creamy, the body medium/full and the carbonation perfect. An excellent beer in every way and one of the finest Belgians I’ve had.

A: slightly hazy reddish brown, plenty of carbonation leaves a thin tan head.

S: ripe fruit abounds, cherries, plums, bananas, spices notes. A sweet wonderful nose to this one.

T: smooth and fruity. The malts balance the sweetness of the fruity tastes nicely. Ends with a slight bitter and a slight reminder of the alcohol content. Still finishes nicely.

M: so velvety smooth with nice dancing bubbles that lead into a great warmer, of the soul and the tummy.

O: When the Quad style is mentioned this is a prime example of what it should be. The balance of this beer is World Class. So many things going on, yet seemingly so simple. This one will one will always have a special place in my heart and my refrigerator.

Served out of 22oz bottle and into stemless wine glass.
Appearance- dark brown, heavy carbonation, some lacing, large head that quickly disapates.
Smell- notes of dark fruit and caramel malt.
Taste- wonderful dark fruit balanced by caramel malt, Belgium yeast, heavy carbonation and some alcohol on the finish but not overpowering for the amount of ABV.
mouthfeel- pleasant, lots of carbonation.
Overall- the best Belgium strong/quad I have had up until this point. I will defiantly be gravitating back to this again and again.
