A: Poured with a healthy 3 fingers of rich foamy head. Deep brown and smoggy appearance. Beautiful lacing. I'd say just by looking that this has nothing but good things in store...

S: Raisins, sweet dates, toasty malts and subtle alcohol notes hidden well behind caramel. Very pleasant aroma - not overpowering. Just smells delicious.

T: Bittersweet dates, burnt malty figs. There's a burnt toasty richness that bakes all the flavors together perfectly. Just when you think it is going to turn sour, the flavors pull back into that fresh toasty warmness. Quite delicious.

M: Nice and bubbly, but not overdone. It strikes a rare balance there.

O: Fantastically balanced ale that boasts bold rich flavors without the characteristic "heaviness" of a stout, and even treads bitter waters without leaving even a hint of a boozy aftertaste. Very impressive indeed.

Poured into my St. Bernardus Chalice.

A-- Beautiful dark caramel with with deep ruby highlights and rich molasses. Smooth, wavy, and consistent lacing with tiny bubbles sticking to the sides.

S-- First the alcohol comes strong with the raisin, then the malts hit in the middle, and an after smell of sweet fruit, bread, caramel, and honey.

T-- The alcohol is very well hidden in this delightful beauty, it barely seeps through between the fig, apricot, plum, apple, maple, malt, bread and yeast as the finishing touch. Complex and keeps me guessing until I take another sip.

M-- First the distinct carbonation hits like high quality champagne; the tiny bubbles tickle the tongue and kiss the palate. Then it settles into a smooth, rich and soft flowy creaminess , almost too much-but wait, no it's just right.

O-- Amazing beer, worthy of being within the world class selection. Tradition prevails with this kind of quality history.
If I were wealthier I would have this readily available in my

I had this well-known Belgian in a tulip.

Appearance- The foam is puffy, airy and reaches an impressive three fingers of an ecru hue.The body is an opaque molasses with some caramel highlights.

Smell- Wow, where to start the dissection of this complex beer. Okay, lets start with the currants and general dark fruitiness. There is also some sweet honey in play that butts up with some raisin.

It gets a little edgy with the bready malts and alcohol.

Taste- I appreciate that the sweetness is one of the first things to come across the palate. The honey and raisin then starts to get some bready malt and figs working with it.

The finish has some booziness and earthy yeast. What a great and spicy drink.

Mouth feel- The beer is a little rough from that booziness, but it is also creamy and a very solid medium body. It could be creamier, feels a little fizzy on the tongue.

Overall- There are great, complex flavors in this beer that get greater and greater with every sip. I also enjoyed how the nose was able to be just as complex as what I experienced on the palate.

A great beer that is a wonderful sipper. I was right to enjoy this on a cold, January night.

A: Pours a cloudy maple syrup body. Solid billowy 1" head, hot cocoa in color. There is sparse lacing left behind to the bottom of the glass.

S: Wow, this is one pungent brew. Immediately pick up sweet fig preserves, wrapped in rich dark brown sugar. Apple pie baking in the oven comes to mind too, but light on the cinammon. Plenty of the belgian yeast banana scent as well, strong. Malts are hard to pick up but get distinct butterscotch tone.

T: Taste doesn't disappoint. Immediately, as in the aroma, I get tons of sweet fig preserves. Some richer raisin or prune in their too, very fruity. Somehow doesn't become overly sweet, but it's on the edge. Bananas hit as well, but muted. Some dark cherry comes into play, a bit more tart then the other flavors.

M: Thick, velvety, chewy beer through and through. Maybe not surprising for a Belgian, but somewhat higher carbonation then expected.

O: I admit to not being a fan of Belgian styles, particularly Quads, but I really enjoyed this. Huge aroma and flavor profile, complexity without being overly sweet, very nice.
