Like its other St. Bernardusian beer brethren, the slim 11.2-ounce bottle features the smiling monk on the label. What's he so happy about, I wonder? It must be the beer?
Yielding its crown with a hearty hiss, the vessel rapidly begins foam-building operations that threaten to breach the bottleneck before I can even get the brew into my Delirium tulip glass. Just in the nick of time to avert a foamover, I get it into the glass and marvel at its murkily-glowing coppery-amber-reddish color and the self-replenishing cap of spongy white foam atop. A blizzard of fine bubbles rages through the glass, holding the fluffy head firm at a finger-and-a-half's thickness, allowing fine filmy lacing to coat the glass in ragged tatters.
Pater Six's aroma of super-ripe orchard fruits and sugary, spicy caramel candy is really pretty inviting, and my first sip confirms the notion of candied fruits drizzled in semisweet caramel and sprinkled with crushed white pepper. A twangy twist of Granny Smith apple tanginess crispens and freshens the profile, and a dash of mellow, lightly grassy, fruit peel-type bitterness cleans up the finish.
This is an extremely easy drinker whose well-constructed medium body is lightened to exceptional fluffiness and quaffability by the torrent of internal carbonation.
