Purchased in the wonderful St. Bernardus holiday gift pack. Oddly I opted not to use the included glass to drink this out of.
APPEARANCE: Pours into a Westvleteren chalice a ruddy amber brown with a tight, bone-white head on top. It starts at over a finger's height and barely drops at all. A beautiful looking beer!
SMELL: Damn, these beers are so freaking complex. The abbey-style yeast takes the forefront, and its esters really work their magic. Dates, candi, and bubblegum join with biscuit and chocolate to form a killer combo. A decent hit of alcohol is detectable, but that seems to be appropriate and expected in this type of beer.
TASTE: Nicely sweet in the taste, but definitely dry enough to not be cloying. Cherry, chocolate, dates, and others join with a not-all-that-subtle hop bitterness to create a fantastic balance. The finish is dry, as previously noted, and leaves a hint of the bitterness. The result is an intense need to take another sip.
MOUTHFEEL: Quite light for a beer this assertive. But that's just how I like my Belgians. The carbonation is average but spritzy and fuzzy, which seems right.
DRINKABILITY: Well, I'm nearly finished already. This would be a killer combo with dinner, but it's sure working nicely on its own right now. I could surely put down a few of these in a night which is a dangerous thing to think about at 6.7%.
Damn, I expect this from the Abt12 but Pater 6 comes through just as much. This needs to be a repeat buy for me.

330 ml bottle poured into a small goblet.
Best by 12/7/23
The lively pour is dark caramel brown with a one finger head. The bubbly foam is khaki colored and leaves lace. Subtle dark fruit and bread aroma with some metallic notes. Well attenuated malty flavor, dark fruit and dark sugar with a woody tang. Medium bodied with a slightly effervescent feel, a bit chalky. Decent Dubbel but not one I find outstanding.

Bottle purchased and drank at The Sovereign in Washington, DC.
This one pours a dark-ish brown, with a small foamy head, and lots of lacing.
There’s caramel and dark fruit on the nose, with fruitcake, and clove.
This feels like a dialed down version of Abt 12, which makes sense. It’s more approachable but less complex and intense. There’s a nice fruitiness, with a distinct golden breadiness and lots of caramel. There’s a touch of clovey/herbal bitterness but it’s definitely mostly malt driven.
This is lighter bodied, but creamy, and super drinkable.
I honestly have not had much from this brewery outside of Abt 12, so this was really cool to try.

Nutty, dried fruits, vinous character. Smooth and subtle, dry, a lighter dubbel
In terms of flavor intensity and heft. Less effervescent than other examples of the style and also lower in alcohol. Appealing, quieter kind of beer - contemplative. Also a nice opener, one that might get lost amid bigger louder beers (Belgian or otherwise).

a: murky dark brown and deep purple color with a silky 1.5 finger tan head that seems to be fading pretty quick
s: fig, plums, and raisins upfront. crusty fruitcake and molasses. brown sugar, leather, and a slight nutty note. caramel, and a very faint earthy note. amazing aroma
t: dark caramel and molasses upfront. huge note of raisins and plums follow. figs and that fruitcake that i got in the aroma arrive next. theres a leathery note and then a pretty big hit of Belgian yeast. a slight alcohol tinge as well followed by fresh crusty bread and a little bit of hazelnut
m: full mouthfeel with strong carbonation, yet still somehow a bit light
o: very excellent beer. nice and complex, but not overbearing and still keeps the mouthfeel you'd expect from a Dubbel

Cloudy red-brown, big, rocky off-white head, excellent retention and lacing
Cola, dark fruit, caramel, some spice aroma
bananas foster, birch beer, quatre epices, really each sip reveals new flavors
Medium light bodied and higher (fitting) carbonation
This is an awesome beer
