From the gift pack (four beers and a chalice). Something stamped on that says "FL 08 07 09" I guess that's the drink-by date. 11.2 fl oz. Served at cellar temp (~50 F) and glad I did.
Even with a restrained pour produces a billowy head with bubbles of all sizes. Great staying power (and that's an understatement). A nutty brown color, fairly opaque but not that dark hued, with frenzied bubbles around the edges.
Smells sweet and yeasty; I smell vanilla, figs, pudding. Just a hint of hops. Boy, this is what the brewery in heaven must smell like. Some elusive singular smell I can't pin down, but some sort of earthy after-the-rain-mountain-fresh thing is going on. There is a little tingle of alcohol, especially as it warms.
Taste is a gentle fig custard bread dessert. Not cloying, subtly spiced. Some more vanilla, and a hint of hops that turns into a hint of alcohol on the finish. Definitely fruitiness, although I can't pick a specific kind; tastes like a mix of trace amounts of many fruits with bubblegum/banana the strongest, so it's probably the yeast. There are definitely candi sugars in here, and they are delicious. Almost perfect, except for the alcohol peeking through.
The mouthfeel is deliciously creamy and luxurious but as drinkable as water. The bubbles gently massage the tongue.
This is just sublime. I would drink it in in a box, with stinky socks, and Mr. Fox ... not just drinkable because it's good, however. It's also refreshing and not an overpowering ABV, and you can either dwell on the tastes or just close your eyes and smile. One of the best I've had.
