330ml bottle into snifter. best before "A 10 04 16", consumed on november 14, 2014

a: an opaque, murky deep brown-chestnut-mahogany colour with three fingers of fluffy, frothy, bone-hued head

s: a strong spicy yeast presence and lots of sweet caramel malt. undertones of dates, plums, prunes, and freshly baked bread

t: bready, malty, spicy, and yeasty to begin with. flavours of the aforementioned fruits intermingle with the initial malty sweetness. has a moderate-in-strength drying quality that kicks in early and lingers for quite some time

m: medium mouthfeel, moderate prickly carbonation, sticky

o: an excellent beer. sweet and loaded with flavour, but has an ample amount of bitterness after each sip

330 ml bottle served medium chilled into a tulip glass. Produced a lovely frothy head which left a good film and lacing. Colour is a medium dark brown with some haze to it and active carbonation.

S - assertive notes of belgian yeast, allspice, raisin, cooked pears, black pepper, caramelization, a hint of brown sugar, cherries and a robust dark fruity character, it has a cigar like character and a really enticing complex dark current/raisin note. Shows nice floral characters as well, just a hint of ethanol. Aroma on this was outstanding and probably exceeded the taste.

T - start has rich fruits, plummy, raisin, dates, and rustic malty notes, bready, then progressively more spicy, as cinnamon, nutmeg? and a yeasty pepperiness come up. Light start with some of the florals and a sweetness of caramel and toffee, before the yeasty character comes in with a wave of complex spice notes leading to a tight, moderately bitter finish with some dry maltiness and pronounced pepper.

M - dominated by the malts, rich belgian malt body, gentle carbonation, initially it is quite effervescent but settles, robust and satisfying with a hint of sweetness, and also a crispness especially on the finish to make it a delightfully sessionable ale.

A very well rounded Dubbel, no shortage of yeasty spice and complexity here, a hefty flavour profile that has a strong malt and caramel profile but also plays well to the yeast. Delightful beer, well balanced and quite approachable, quite a peppery dubbel and one I will look forward to having again.
