shared a 750ml bottle with demcorhip on his way through town. Poured into a snifter.

Pours an almost opaque dark brown with purple highlights and a yeasty haze. Decanted slowly a massive head erupts and settles slowly, leaves lots of wet lacing. Aroma is full of fruity yeast aroma: some plum, apple, pear and raisins. Spicy with peppery hops and mellowed out by a big bready malt presence.

Taste is complex and mellow at the same time. Massive chewy bready malt up front followed quickly by some spices: clove and coriander. Tons of fruit follows that up. It's so well balanced though, and very comforting. Creamy mouthfeel, but not overly thick, which in this case is a blessing. Zippy carbonation dances all the flavour across the tongue, and dries the palate just perfectly. For me, the alcohol is dangerously hidden for a beer this strong, and I was nearly chugging it down it was so drinkable. For me, this is the easiest-drinking Quad I've had the chance of trying, well crafted and extremely balanced, but perhaps at the cost of a bit of complexity. Nonetheless an amazing beer.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Hazy copper body. Khaki head. Medium collar.

Smell - Oxidized. Cardboard, not sherry. Fruity malt. A bit of yeast.

Taste - Caramel. Some dark fruits. Oxidation kicks in shortly thereafter. Cardboard that doesn't improve it.

Mouthfeel - Medium body. Cardboard. Slick body.

Overall - Just too old. Not even as good as the regular St. Bernardus.
