Enjoyed out of a 330 mL bottle marked with a 'best by' date on the label of 01/08/2016. Poured into a Boulevard Smokestack Series chalice.

Appearance - They sure know how to make a beautiful-looking beer at St. Bernardus. This one pours a hazy amber with a gradient of glowing starfruit yellow at the bottom of the glass that grows to a muted graham cracker brown just underneath the head. Above the shadowy golden sits a one finger head of stark white foam that covers the liquid like a blanket of wet snow. Retention is excellent, lingering for quite some time before fading to a moderate film with nice, silky lacing intermittently around the glass.

Smell - Pretty traditional tripel notes, with baking spice, some fruity phenols reminiscent of anjou pear and nectarine, but nothing aggressive. Gentle and delicate, so that spice notes of clove and yeast aren't overpowered. Some hints at the underlying estery heat as well, but nothing terribly boozy or unbalanced.

Taste - The excellent smell outpaces the taste a bit, but not by much. Here, the phenols are more overt with juicy notes of pear, nectarine and now white plum and even hints of plantain--the much less sweet cousin of banana. The clove is still lingering now with complementary notes of cardamom. Finish is slightly sweet and boozy, but just barely.

Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied and just a tad on the thick/full side. Moderate carbonation that provides enough contrapuntal bite to the more viscous body. Finish is sweet, but not lingering.

Overall, a classic tripel that is right near the top of my favorites in the style. In fact it's close enough that I'd probably have to do a side-by-side with the others that standout in my mind to really have a good idea on which was my favorite. Sometimes, it's refreshing to know that such an well-done beer can be picked up on the shelf of about any liquor store you could walk into at any point in time.

Poured from bottle dated 25.08.16, 11.2 oz into tulip. Deep gold as noted by most reviewers. I did get the spicy, mildly estery nose (some noted no or limited esters). Head white, fairly quick dispersal. Taste was, for me, true-to-form tripel with citrus-spice up front and yeasty in finish with very mild aclohol. Mouthfeel was pretty full-bodied with a more aggressive carbonation than it looked like it would give. Citrus lingers on tongue for awhile. Keeper, will buy more.
