On tap at the Armsby Abbey

A: Creamy 1 finger head with pale orange and slightly hazy color

N: Nose is yeasty with spices, some Belgian malts, a touch of raisiny sugar and alcohol

T: Taste starts with sweet malts and candi sugar with alcohol that fades quickly, a slight raisin and fruity quality but maintains its light Belgian quality, some nice bitterness is very light, it also has a slight nutmeg and nutty quality

M: It has a very smooth mouth but thick at the same time, almost velvety

F: It finishes dry and a little salty almost, taste hands for about 30 seconds on the back of the tongue

Final Thoughts: Very rich and delicious but still pretty light for a strong Belgian. It is a good staple for tripels.

Pours a clouded gold with a white head. Nose is mild. At first the thing that came to mind was pencil shavings (like when you sharpen your pencil with that little 2nd grade sharpener). Very slight citric tone. Overall though, the nose is very quiet. The flavor. Slightly woody tone on the tail end. But overall, it is extremely well balanced. Smooth and even. On the first sip, the feel was like I opened my mouth, closed my eyes, and had someone pour silk into my mouth. Beautiful. Hence the 5. Very drinkable. One to go back to again and again.

Normally when I see a beer reviewed so much with such a high score, I approach with trepidation. This one did deliver though. And I am glad to have been able to grab a bottle when I was in the Bay area.

I had this once before and decided to revist since it was close to a year ago. I enjoyed this from a 750 chilled in a tulip

The color is golden apricot with translucent clarity and 2 finger fluffy cap w/ compact beading and visible carbonation with good retention and lacing. The smell is light with floral esters and mild hops which are more herbal with light clove scent augmenting with some honeydew fruit and mild malt notes which are slightly nutty in the nose.

The taste is dry with some mild yeast accompaniment and both spice and light fruit essence are noticeable in the taste with a mild creaminess from the malt and semi-high carbonation leaves a mild mineral taste w/ mild herbal hops which are experienced as the ale finishes with dryness on the palate and low alcohol impact on the taste in general. Overall I was very pleased with this as it develops increasing in temperature the spice character and hops seem to emerge with a a very flavorful quality and well rounded taste in general with strength matching the feel. This is what I consider a total package beer-wonderful and a high value as well, highly recommended

33cl slender brown bottle with a “consume before end of 2004” freshness date on the side of the label.

Appearance: Hazy pale amber, darker than a lot of tripels I have had and the lace is just ok as it leave only a ring.

Smell: Faint whiff of alcohol, fruit and solvent but mostly toned down. Touch of tropical fruit as well in the nose.

Taste & Mouthfeel: Nicely layered and infused carbonation, fluffy moderate body that goes creamy underneath the crispness. Solid dry malt character, phenols are present with waves of herbal flavour and the sweet and spicy alcohol delivers some fruitiness to the taste buds. Chalky yeast. Undertone of hops show a tired bitterness but all of the other flavours pick up the slack to keep things in balance.

Drinkability & Notes: Hmm … not exactly what I expected or even what I see a tripel as but there is no doubt this is a good beer. Nothing earth shattering, just good.

Pours with a resounding pop! Pours a slightly hazed apricot (clears later). Super head retention & very good lacing

S: Pineapple, passion fruit, & lemony hops once warm

T: Big-time, tropical fruittyness (apple peels & pineapple), some honey, & a bit of lemony hops up front. Lemony & grapefruitty hops, pus dates, apricot, & more pineapple & honey as this warms. Finishes fruitty, with a hint of vanilla & some more lemony hops

MF: Medium bodied with low carbonation, some creamyness, warming sensations, 2/3rds through the bottle

Drinks pretty easy for the complexity & abv. Not the best tripel out there, but pretty good

Appearance: Unfiltered golden sunshine like tone with a nice layer of frothy white head leaves spread out Belgian style lacing, it's purdy. Aroma: Awesome pineapple bubblegum notes rich sweetness I'm loving this brew complex spiciness there, wow. Flavor: Nice fruit esters swarm the tastebuds this is the shit my style of a tripel. Creamy tone to it with the bubblegum sweet tone this is a classic tripel down to the T, nice spiciness. Mouthfeel: Creamy mouthfeel spritzy carbonation good stuff I'm loving this shit good stuff in my opinion. Drinkability: Excellent smooth delicate and hella drinkable.

Served on draught into a St. Bernardus goblet in Poperinge, Belgium, whilst waiting for a belbus to pick me up to take me to the Westvleteren abbey. Reviewed from notes.

A: Pours a one finger head with nice cream lacing. Decent thickness. Hazy orange colour. Poor retention is understandable considering the 8% ABV.

Sm: Fruit esters: orange and citrus mainly. Hoppy but light strength.

T: Hoppy body with lingering estery notes through the finish. Relatively simple build for a tripel. Balanced but somewhat bland. Not a beer to be served at cold draught temperature; it's better suited as a summer afternoon beer to be sipped intermittently.

Mf: A bit chewy, but delightfully light. Nicely smooth and refreshing.

Dr: Nothing special, but fairly priced if you're in Belgium. Give it a go, but don't expect a great abbey beer.

Poured into my St. Bernardus goblet. A hazy golden yellow color with about two fingers of head. Not much lacing.

The aroma was floral and fruity, citrus notes, orange, lemon.

The taste was smooth and subtle, slight alcohol that fades quickly. Some bitterness to balance everything.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied with some good carbonation.

This is a very nice tripel that is very easy to drink at 8% ABV...

Appearance: perfectly opaque orangey color, with a fine, white head atop.

Aroma: full of soft spices, orange peel, lemon rind, spicy, citrusy, yeasty, full, magnificent.

Taste: excellent entry on the tongue & palate, beautiful, yeasty, rich and fruity.
Soft, yet earthy, hoppy, full-bodies, and delicious.
An excellent tripel, for the sugary aspect was much more subdued than other offerings which misinterpreted, perhaps, the portions of the sweetness in the style.

Seemed nothing more, or less, than perfect, without being mindblowing.
Very, very worthwhile brew.

Tight near-white head. Notable cloud of yeast suspended in the glass. The color orange-light amber. Lots of clumpy lace.

Pleasant background brown sugar and molasses. Warming aroma of raw alcohol.

Creamy and mildly sweet. The finish is more sour than sweet. The body is thinner than most Tripels and the carbonation is near the level of soda. The alcohol presence is not overwhelming, which I like. Overall, this is an easy Tripel to enjoy.

Poured from an 11.2 oz. bottle into a tulip. Best of date on the bottle is 14.06.13.

a - Pours a murky golden-brown color with two fingers of fluffy white head with nice retention and lacing and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of spices, Belgian yeast, bready malts, and citrus. Smells great.

t - Tastes of Belgian yeast, spices, lemon, honey, bananas, and bready malts. Very nice, and a slight step up from the nose.

m - Medium body and low carbonation. The body is super smooth and creamy, makes it very easy to drink.

d - A great tripel all around. At 8% I thought it was very easy to drink and I loved the taste and mouthfeel. Would certainly have again.

Poured into my DFH snifter, I can't find my St. B glass...grrr.

Beer is amber and hazy. Forms a HUGE head that falls away to one finder and leaves a lot of lacing on the glass. Carbonation is high and steady. Looks awesome.

Oh sweet Jesus, it smells like awesome. Write awesome on a piece of paper and then smell it, that's what this is. Its estery and sweet with a level of great yeastiness (that's a word according to google). Its perfect.

Creamy medium bodied beer with a dry finish. The forward is mildly sweet. The midpalate is moderately sweet and estery. The yeast character is lower than you'd expect. This beer is awesome. One of the best tripels I've ever had.

Pours clouded golden with a thick head that thins to a lasting cover, leaving broken rings of lacing.

The smell is of bubblegum and cotton candy with floral, herbal, slightly grassy spicing.

The taste is lemony, grassy, herbal with bready notes with plenty of sweet maltiness and sugar sweetness. Sweet with a spicy herbal dryness in the finish.

Meduim-bodied with an airy effervescence. Spicing lingers.

Well-balanced with subtle complexities, this sips very easily.

Pours lightly hazy/cloudy deep golden amber color with a 1-2 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big lemon, orange zest, peach, pineapple, apricot, pear, apple, light banana, honey, candi sugar, bread, pepper, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Incredible aromas with awesome complexity and balance of fruity/earthy yeast and moderate pale malt sweetness; with great strength. Incredible complexity of fruity/earthy yeast and moderate pale malt sweetness; with a great malt/yeast balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth, crisp, and slightly slick/bready mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an incredible tripel style! All around amazing complexity and balance of fruity/earthy yeast and moderate pale malt sweetness; and very smooth and crisp to sip on for the ABV. An extremely delicious offering.

.33L bottle (best by 8/2014 dated) served in a Piraat tulip glass.

A: The beer is a pale orange-amber color, hazy with a towering, creamy tan head, some of which lasts until the end, and leaves some lace on the glass.

S: The fruity/floral aroma reflects Belgian yeast, light malts and a touch of hops. Excellent for style.

T: probably the best tasting tripel I've ever had. The toasted malts are a bit more apparent than usual, banana and clove make up only a small portion of the complex flavor, and the sweet/bitter/tart mix is superb.

M: Crisp and very smooth; medium body; medium-high carbonation, slightly dry finish.

O: World class; my favorite tripel{?}.

The beer pours a cloudy gold color with a thick white head. The aroma is good. It has a creamy citrousy scent; very nice. I also has another smell that I can't put my finger on; probably yeast. The taste is decent. It is rich and full of pale malts, belgian yeast, and some mysterious flavor. I really don't know what it is. The mouthfeel is good. It is a full bodied beer with good carbonation. I think this is an excellent beer; a great Belgian.

A: Pours a cloudy golden yellow in color with some light visible carbonation and some visible sediment in suspension. The beer has a finger tall off-white head that reduces to a thin film covering the entire surface of the beer. Moderate lacing is observed.

S: This beer has the aroma of banana, light fruit (pear), and some lighter notes of spice (like clove). There is a light presence of alcohol.

T: This beer is fairly sweet with banana and some light fruit (pear). In addition, the taste is much spicier than the smell with clove being the predominant spice.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Smooth.

O: This beer is enjoyable but you can definitely detect the presence of the alcohol. I like the light fruit sweetness combined with the banana. Definitely more of a sipping beer than a session beer.

The beer pours a cloudy dark yellow color with a white head. The aroma is heavy on the oranges and lemons with some Belgian yeast notes. I also get a little bit of bready malt. The flavor is a mix of Belgian candy sugar with some orange and bready malt notes. There is also a little bit of alcohol present. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Picked up a bottle of this when I was up in Massachusetts. Review from notes.

A: Pours a rather hazy light yellow/golden color with a two finger white head on top. Very slow dissipation to a thin layer on top that left behind some sticky lacing.

S: A nice and complex nose, with some lemon, orange, and a bit of banana (but not as much as other Tripels I have had). There is some doughy malt as well as the typical Belgian yeast aroma and some light pepper and coriander.

T: Light citrus fruits hit immediately, lemon peel and orange peel and to a lesser extent lemon and orange fruit. Banana plays a bigger role than it did in the aroma. There is a bit if bubblegum and a doughy flavor as very present along with some light spice.

M: Medium bodied and rather smooth with a good level of carbonation, maybe a touch high.

O: A solid tripel, deserving of its status as one of the "classics" in the style. Been on a tripel kick in the last few months it seems and this one is up there, but not at the top.

Bottle into a matching St. Bernardus goblet. The brew appears a pale golden yellow color with a rich finger of white froth that slowly fades leaving a wall of lace sticking to the glass. Despite the most careful pour, a serious amount of yeast makes it's way into the glass making this look like one chunky brew. A swirl agitates about a finger back to the surface.

The aroma has some sweetness to it reminiscent of belgian candy sugar coupled with some pale fruit notes like apple and pear. There is a very mild yeasty spice almost like pepper also present before blending into a more familiar aspect of clove. A trace amount of herbal hops are also felt across the backend of the brew's nose.

The taste is a bit sweet and bready with notes of pear and apples with a complimenting fruity alcohol note contrasted by some herbal hops. Like some of the other St. Bernardus offerings, this one collectively almost comes off with a medicinal aspect to it. There are some earthy notes coming out of this mixing with yeast as the brew warms up.

This is a medium bodied brew with a moderate to lighter level of carbonation. Overall not bad, but not a tripel I would drop my pants and run to have again. Worth a try if you never had it before, but this one was a little underwelming for me. While it offered some nice complexity, it just was ok.

5/15/05- Purchased at Draeger's Market in San Mateo, CA

Presentation- 750ml bottle caged and corked. A best by date on the cap of the cage. Poured into my St. Bernardus chalice.

Appearance- Brown, almost amber pour. Huge fat dirty blonde chunky head and excellent lacing. Huge chunks just clinging to my glass upon finishing. Literally could stick my finger against the dried lace and could pick up the glass without it falling off my finger.

Smell- Nice and sweet as well as a very sugary smell. Seems cookie dough is about best way to describe it as most reviewers of this have said about the same thing.

Taste- Sweet and sugary, maybe some vanilla, butterscotch?, caramel, and citrus fruit shavings (lemon, orange, banana). Almost like drinking a sweet fruit cocktail with a caramel suprise on the side.

Mouthfeel- Average to low carbonation, nice coating feeling from the thick caramel flavor.

Drinkability- Probably the best or at least comparable to the best tripel I have had. I just hope the store gets some more of these in soon. Time to stock up and age a few.

Having passed over this year-round and easily attainable Tripel multiple times, I figured it was a nice time to grab open and share with my girlfriend over dinner. Corked and caged 750 ml bottle, poured into two tulip glasses, pair with braised Hawaiian jerk pork.

A: Golden rustic light copper body with an active stream of carbonation bubbles from the bottom of the glass. The retention cap is really nice but this beer lacks every bit of lacing. I wouldn't say it's detrimental but I've seen plenty of Tripels give a better appearance than this one.

S: Alcohol esters are immediate on the nose along with a base of doughy yeast and some milled grain. A nice amount of spice, lemon and orange come through. I was surprised I didn't get any notes of banana in the fruit aspect but it still took on a very traditional aroma.

T: Orange and lemon fruits bring a rush of flavor to the palate, followed quickly with the classic Belgian yeast notes I've come to love and expect to taste. Light white pepper spice hints are towards the end, along with banana and bubblegum into the linger.

M: Highly bubbly and active carbonation, fairly light-bodied with a general "spritzy" feeling to it. I'd like this a bit less carbonated with a solid medium body to it.

This is a very classic approach to the Belgian Tripel and is a very good, solid demonstration of it. For me, the high amounts of carbonation were a bit of a distraction but the flavor profile stood on it's own. Overall, one of the better Tripels I've had but not the best.

Pours with a dense meringue like three inch head. A cloudy deep gold color. Lightly sweet but dry at the same time. A bit of orange crosses my tongue. Smells Belgian in its complexity (imagine that), a fruitiness and a mustiness is here in the nose. A sharpness in the taste is present from the carbonation (this beer is well carbonated). There is some spiciness in the nose too. Very well put together triple, there is a certain softness/ roundness from the malt that ties this beer together very well. Definite alcohol notes if you look for it, but definitely not in your face. Displays the classic Belgian lacing as you work your way through your glass. One of the best, if not the best, examples of the Tripel style of beer.

Finally getting around to reviewing this beer. Thanks to Jeff for leaving it in my fridge.

Served in a Duvel oversized tulip.

The beer is a murky orange color. The fluffy white head is gargantuan, encompassing the upper half of the vessel, leaving copious lacing on stuck on the walls.

The aroma is oranges, yeast, bread, spice. Wow, this smells fantastic.

Complex, well balanced, fabulous. Coriander really comes through. Citrus and yeast blended to perfection. One of the best tripels I have ever had.

Pours a gold color with a white medium sized head that remains through the drink. Some sediment is also there. Little lacing develops just above the surface. The aroma is of yeast, citrus, and bread. The flavor is a great balance of malt, bitterness, yeast, citrus, and nuttiness.

The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, and some tingling develops in your throat during the swallow. The bread tones last long on the tongue. This is a meal in a glass. I'm going for another helping...
