Will pour a five+ finger white head that fades quickly to a thin layer, leaving some lace. Hazy pale amber color. Honey and fruit nose. Good carbonation and medium bodied. Flavor is light honey, yeast and pear. Nice triple. Higher ABV is hidden. $17.00 for a gift pak of four 330ml bottles from Tully's Beer & Wine Wells, Me.

A: Cloudy, goldenrod-amber color with a 1/8 inch layer of fine, small bubbled foam.

S: Crisp apple and a hint of dry grass

T: Light citrus (orange/apple), fresh spice...coriander?

M: Well carbonated, dancing on the tongue in the front-center of the palate.

D: Deceptively light in taste and small in bottle serving, this beer is soothing going down the throat. If it was free flowing, I couldprobably drink quite a bit before I realized I was getting blitzed. Even the burps from this beer are pretty tasty.

Strange one this. Not what I'd really call a Tripel, more like a strong Witbier. Lots of yeast from start to finish with a chalky creaminess to match. Very smooth with a slightly sweet but dry finish.

I get the feeling that this beer is as confused about its identity as I am! Still a great tasting beer but not what I was expecting from a tripel.

Update: This one has grown on me since my first tasting (over 3 years ago!) and has now become a regular staple in my household. The missus loves it and I now agree. I don't know if it has changed or I have (probably the latter?) I find myself drinking tripels quite a bit these days and I never refrigerate them. This one I just crack open and pour straight from the cellar into a tulip glass. A classic tripel and probably the best from St.Bernadus!

Pours a hazy golden with a medium white head. Smells strongly of pear and alcohol. Taste is light grain up front, a spicy yeast strain in the middle, and a hint of tartness in the finish. Very little appearance of alcohol which is nice, as it can be apparant in many tripels. Mouthfeel is mindbogglingly smooth, low carbonation. Very rich. Good drinkability. This isnt as good as some tripel's I have had, but it is a good beer that I would gladly drink again.

A - pours a darker, cloudy yellow with a massive head that eventually dissipates

S - very, very sweet. There is a lot of spices and some sweet fruits - green apples, a lot of pear, and some cherries

T - The taste follows the nose. Very sweet and fruity overall. This has a lot of sweet malt that is dominated by the sweet fruits. I got a lot of pear and spices. There is also some booziness that came through the more I drank it.

M - very smooth, albeit but a tad thin

D - This is a fantastic triple, I think the best one I have tried in recent memory (maybe of all time). Just another fantastic brew from St. Bernardus, I wouldn't expect anything less.

A: From an 11.2 oz bottle, pours an apricot/orange hue with a two finger white, head. Ample lacing left on glass as the head slowly disappears.

S: Hints of pear and pineapple with some candy sugar and an alcohol bite.

T: Sweet, with pineapple and yeasty bread finish. Candy sugar and a subtle, spicy citrus quality is also present. Mild bitterness, but also a slight alcohol burn at the finish. Alcohol is not pronounced, but not completely hidden either.

M: Supple and creamy. A delicate balance of carbonation and a slick mouthfeel. I was too pro-occupied with the intense and complex taste of this one to really be able to discern the mouthfeel.

D: This one is an excellent sipper, worthy of the price. (But it does hit the wallet kind of hard at $5 for an 11.2 oz. bottle) Out of all the tripels I've had, only a few have been below average. Out of all the tripels that originate from Belgium, this one is in the top five, so far, along with Westmalle, Tripel Karmeliet, Affligem and La Fin Du Monde (this ones from Canada, actually). Chimay and Golden Carolus are just behind these five. Each of these brews all offer subtle variances of the tripel style, so all are worthy to try.

A - color, nice head that stuck around for a while, great lacing

S - sweet and fruity

T - not as sweet as initially thought, tastes a little more yeasty with an aftertaste that warms the palate and throat after sipping

M - good carbonation and mouthful

D - strong drinkability

Really good beer, better than I have had in a while. I would drink this beer again and again. It goes down well and then has a great aftertaste. It stands up as one of the better tripels I have had. You really notice the balance in this tripel against most of the other tripels on the market.

Poured into a Duvel glass. Glass of cold water on the side to sip from periodically.

Appearance: As poured the beer is a burnished gold color with a light haze and a 1" fluffy, creamy off-white head that recedes slowly. The liquid is filled with lots of active carbonation. Soon there are rings of foam around the glass and a thin layer on the surface of the liquid. Sipping leaves sheets of foam and leggy patterns of scattered lacing.

Smell: The aroma is subtle and lightly fruity with some orchard fruits (pear, apple) and a background of lightly spicy white pepper.

Taste: As expected from the nose, the flowery, fruity flavors (pear and apple) are both sweet and tart at the same time. It is hard to taste any alcohol. There is however a slightly musty taste in here as well, probably from the yeast.

Mouthfeel: The mouth feel is medium bodied and creamy with ample fine carbonation. The finish is medium in length and ends in a pleasant bitterness, but has a slight almost musty character that's not part of what I think of as being part of a tripel.

Drinkability: This is reasonably drinkable and I'd not turn down a chance at another one. That being said, while I thought this was a nice tripel, I had expected more based on the reviews I read before purchasing it. I actually prefer the Watou triple from the same brewery.

Aroma is yeasty and fruity, pears and white grapes.
Taste is sweet and fruity again, pears and white grapes is what I'm getting.
Medium bodied, very lively carbonation in the mouth.
A very easy drinking Tripel.

11.2 Ounce brown bottle poured into a goblet

Appearance: Hazy slightly darker yellow color with a medium amount of head leaving some slight lacing

Smell: It has a granola/sweet oat with a slight fruity (banana) flavor

Taste: Fruity malty flavor with only a slight alcoholic taste in the background. Pretty sweet but not a normal strong sweetness, it is a nice fruity sweetness.

Poured into a St. Bernardus chalice a pale yellow with a one finger white head. Good retention and decent lacing. Smells strong of belgian yeast, with orange, apple, and white grapes. The taste is unmistakable belgian, again with apples and white grapes being the leaders of the fruity flavors. The mouthfeel is high in carbonation, which is just right for the style. When they wrote the book on begian Tripel, this is definatly a standard.

Serving type- 11.6 ounce bottle poured into a St. Bernardus chalice.

Pours a dirty blonde hefe type color. There is a small one finger white lace that disipates after a few minutes. There is a small amount of cling to the glass. I am getting smell notes of fruit and subtle yeast, nothing that overpowers. The taste is reminscent of the smell with a strong presence of fruity flavors followed with a yeasty after taste. Not bad, but a beer taste that reminds me a lot of wheat beers. A decent tasting beer that is rather smooth for its ABV. I am not a huge fan of this style but not a bad offering from this brewery.

330ml bottle drank from my st bernardus chalice. best by date of july 7, 2013 on the back label.

A- this starts off as a slow gusher. it pours out a hazy golden yellow colored body with a small quickly fading off white head. the head leaves behind small incomplete rings of lacing.

S- belgian yeast is the first thing that i notice. after that come light summer fruits. apples, pears, banana, and white grapes.

T- like the smell, belgian yeast comes to the front of the taste. it is followed by fruits like pear, apple, banana, and grapes. somewhat spicy as well. alcohol has a minor role in the overall taste.

M- light to medium bodied with a high level of carbonation. decent warming from the alcohol. exactly what ive come to expect from this brewery.

D- easy to finish, and probably my favorite of the 4 beers in the gift set. id check this out again and i think it might be something to share with non beer advocates if they appreciate wheat beers.

Pours a brilliant hazy golden yellow with an enormous fluffy white head that refused to go anywhere for the duration.

The aroma is unmistakably St. Bernardus with the signature fruity esters - bubble gum and banana - from the yeast. There is a light spiciness to the nose and some sugary apples and pears.

The taste is much the same but seems even sweeter and much fruiter with the pears and apples really coming to the front. The yeast backbone is hefty and imparts the banana sweetness that I got in the aroma. The finish has some peppery spices but less than some tripels I've had.

The mouthfeel is extremely creamy and close to full-bodied for the style. Lots of carbonation as well.

St. Bernardus makes some world class beers and this one is no exception. It's an insanely drinkable, uber-fruity, sweet tripel that holds it's own with some of the best out there. I love this stuff.

Poured into St. Bernardus goblet a cloudy deep golden color with two fingers of pillowy white head that retained well and laced nicely. Aroma is initially fruity lemon/orange and spicy with a yeastiness creeping in on the tail. Taste is fruity and spicy but less defined than the smell. Feel is light to medium bodied with a crisp carbonation. Good beer very enjoyable and an example of the style.

750ml bottle. Pours a golden amber with a fizzy white 1-2 finger head that dissipates to a 1/8" head that retains to the bottom of the glass. Nice lacing.

Aroma is yeast, fruit (banana), some spice/pepper.

Flavor is sweet, more banana, spice, yeast.

Mouthfeel is quite pleasant, just the right amount of carbonation. Finishes dry. Alcohol is incredibly well hidden.

I'm more of a fan of dark Belgian ales (LOVE their Abt 12), but I still enjoyed this Tripel from St. Bernardus.

Pours a nice golden color and has a good lasting head.
My first thought on the smell is that it smells like champagne, a nice fruity hint and after it warms a bit the Belgian yeasts and malts come through a bit more.
A great flavor! Has the tastes of the alcohol and the basic flavor of a tripel but it has such a refined taste.

I love this and will buy it again!

Poured into my St. B goblet a hazed honey color. What an impressive thick foamy head! nice retention and lacing too.

The scent is of raw honey, and an orchards worth of fruit dominating the scene. Clove and flowery spice are also noted in the forground.

The taste is more sweet than spice, but more bready and yeasty than both. Stong doughy flavor complimented by medicinal clove, flowers and light orchard fruit round out the lingering and delicious flavor.

The feel is creamy on this medium bodied and highly carbonated brew.

The drinkability is exceptional, especially for a (relatively) lower abv. tripel. I liked Karmelet a wee bit more, But i wouldn't hesitate to put this in the same 'world class'

Poured a 11.2 oz bottle into St. Bernardus chalice. We have a gusher!

A: hazy orange yellow appearance with some floaties. Thin white head, nice retention, heavy lacing

S: very yeasty and bready on the nose, like sourdough bread, lots of characteristic Belgian spiciness

T: the front of the palate is just like the nose with lots of bready flavors, this gives way to a fruity character... white grapes, some tartness. All of this is nicely balance

MF: high carb, somewhat sharp, medium body

D: this is another winner from St. bernardus. I prefer the ABT 12 over this, but it definitely is a nice representation of a tripel

Apearance - Pours a beautiful amber orange (apricot?) with at least a 2 finger white cloud like head that leaves strong lacing.

Nose- Clove, citrus, banana and yeast spicininess are all apparent, but there is also a fruitiness that hints at peaches.

Palate- A ton of spiciness up front (mostly pepper), then sweet, warming and bready. Fruitiness is present, but well masked by the aforementioned.

Mouthfeel- Sticky medium body with a high carbonation level

On tap at Burp Castle, NYC. Poured into a wine glass.

Appearance: Opaque yellow orange, with a huge head, gradually tailored by the bartender into a 1/2 inch, robust, pillowy head that took a good 10 minutes to settle into a millimeter ring. Leaves a broad web of lacing all over the glass.

Smell: Orange rind, Belgian yeast, and malt.

Taste: Big Belgian yeast character, warm and full citrus notes, a mild soapiness, with the faintest hit of alcohol warmth. Abundant and pleasant, but one flavor never overwhelming another. The balance is superb. There's a subtle dryness, a subtle sweetness, subtle and abundant esters popping up and melding into each other; everything in the taste is understated and beautiful.

Mouthfeel: Full-bodied, juicy and creamy, with a subdued but noticeable carbonation. Perfect vessel for the refined flavor of this beer.

Drinkability: Excellent. Refreshing and flavorful, with expertly masked alcohol.


'Subtle' is the word for this beer. It's just a great sipping tripel. It's refreshing, and it does an awful lot without ever going overboard. The boldest aspect of this beer is the orange rind up front, but the transition into its myriad other flavors is quick and mellow. One could easily argue for giving this beer a 5 for taste; I gave a 4.5 simply because I didn't think, for a tripel, there were enough distinct notes for a 5.

This is a beer to pour into an appropriate glass and savor for over an hour, which is exactly what I did when reviewing it. I don't have a single complaint.

750 mL corked & caged. Received for Christmas along with a St Bernardus glass (the 2nd of three such beers).

Poured a gorgeous sunny orange with a white foamy head. Aroma of wheat, orange and candy sugar. Flavor is similar - very lightly citrus, with a hint of bubblegum and clove along with wheat, yeast, and candy sugar. Creamy in the mouth but nice and dry in the finish, with a lingering kiss of sweetness. Very good, not overly complex.

A nice sipper and another enjoyable brew to share with family today.

The third of three beers with glasses my wife gave me still to come...

Damn impressed with this one!

The appearance is murky gold with a frothy foamy head. One thing I love about Belgians, or the ones I have run into, is that they give off great head. THis one leaves a thick lacing down the sides of the glass as well. Floaters everywhere, bottle conditioning is visible.

The smell is very faint, cloves and lemon grass with Belgian yeasts.

The taste is superb! Some type of clove and lemon grass in the taste. A very nice dryness with light Belgian yeasts. Very drinkable and very tasty. There are hints of other spices, just cannot pinpoint them out. Beautiful blend of dry spice and hints of lemon.

The mouthfeel is a bit over carbonated, but I could drink a few bottles of this! Drinkability is amazingly high, cannot get enough.

I was generally underwhelmed by this one, but its still a quality drink. It just doesn't live up to the hype that the Abt 12 Quad left me with.

As previous reviewers have noted, the color is significantly darker than other Tripels and the aroma more subdued. Head pours boisterously and full of large Belgian type bubbles. However, retention is brief and shorter than expected given the relative low ABV. Aroma throws up some Apricots, mild notes of yeast, some biscuit...just aromatically different in comparison to other Tripels. Taste is mostly dominated by the biscuit and reminds me more overall of a very bready and unhoppy amber ale. No notes of alcohol, dried fruit, or anything one has grown used to in Tripels.

I was a thrown a curveball and while this beer was more than just drinkable, it wasn't what I expected when I bought it.

11.2 oz bottle from Magnolia Foods in Lynchburg. $4 for a single.

Appearance: Opened at refrigerator temp and it was a minor gusher-- had my glass ready though, and didnt lose a drop. The gusher head was huge, but susided into normalcy leaving a smooth creamy white head for the remainder of the glass (excellent retention). Sheets of semi-sticky lace. The color is a just slightly hazy yellow-orange.

Smell: Very sweet, very fruity. Peaches, pears, and a few grapes thrown in. Banana too. Clove and yeast. Just a great smelling tripel.

Taste: I'm struck by how spicy and peppery this is. The bready yeast qualities are pretty dominant too. Much, much less fruity than the smell would suggest. Not at all bad, very good actually, but I wanted more from St B, particularly after smelling this thing. It finishes a little bitter, with some sharp ethanol flavor.

Mouthfeel: It feels like a trippel. Bubbly and sticky coating in the mouth. Could be bigger feeling.

Drinkability: Smellability is very high, but I really dont think I'll be going back for this again. Its a good beer, but not the best. Not cheap either. Maybe I was too harsh. I had high expectations I guess.
