Poured into my St. B goblet a hazed honey color. What an impressive thick foamy head! nice retention and lacing too.

The scent is of raw honey, and an orchards worth of fruit dominating the scene. Clove and flowery spice are also noted in the forground.

The taste is more sweet than spice, but more bready and yeasty than both. Stong doughy flavor complimented by medicinal clove, flowers and light orchard fruit round out the lingering and delicious flavor.

The feel is creamy on this medium bodied and highly carbonated brew.

The drinkability is exceptional, especially for a (relatively) lower abv. tripel. I liked Karmelet a wee bit more, But i wouldn't hesitate to put this in the same 'world class'

Poured a 11.2 oz bottle into St. Bernardus chalice. We have a gusher!

A: hazy orange yellow appearance with some floaties. Thin white head, nice retention, heavy lacing

S: very yeasty and bready on the nose, like sourdough bread, lots of characteristic Belgian spiciness

T: the front of the palate is just like the nose with lots of bready flavors, this gives way to a fruity character... white grapes, some tartness. All of this is nicely balance

MF: high carb, somewhat sharp, medium body

D: this is another winner from St. bernardus. I prefer the ABT 12 over this, but it definitely is a nice representation of a tripel

Apearance - Pours a beautiful amber orange (apricot?) with at least a 2 finger white cloud like head that leaves strong lacing.

Nose- Clove, citrus, banana and yeast spicininess are all apparent, but there is also a fruitiness that hints at peaches.

Palate- A ton of spiciness up front (mostly pepper), then sweet, warming and bready. Fruitiness is present, but well masked by the aforementioned.

Mouthfeel- Sticky medium body with a high carbonation level

On tap at Burp Castle, NYC. Poured into a wine glass.

Appearance: Opaque yellow orange, with a huge head, gradually tailored by the bartender into a 1/2 inch, robust, pillowy head that took a good 10 minutes to settle into a millimeter ring. Leaves a broad web of lacing all over the glass.

Smell: Orange rind, Belgian yeast, and malt.

Taste: Big Belgian yeast character, warm and full citrus notes, a mild soapiness, with the faintest hit of alcohol warmth. Abundant and pleasant, but one flavor never overwhelming another. The balance is superb. There's a subtle dryness, a subtle sweetness, subtle and abundant esters popping up and melding into each other; everything in the taste is understated and beautiful.

Mouthfeel: Full-bodied, juicy and creamy, with a subdued but noticeable carbonation. Perfect vessel for the refined flavor of this beer.

Drinkability: Excellent. Refreshing and flavorful, with expertly masked alcohol.


'Subtle' is the word for this beer. It's just a great sipping tripel. It's refreshing, and it does an awful lot without ever going overboard. The boldest aspect of this beer is the orange rind up front, but the transition into its myriad other flavors is quick and mellow. One could easily argue for giving this beer a 5 for taste; I gave a 4.5 simply because I didn't think, for a tripel, there were enough distinct notes for a 5.

This is a beer to pour into an appropriate glass and savor for over an hour, which is exactly what I did when reviewing it. I don't have a single complaint.

750 mL corked & caged. Received for Christmas along with a St Bernardus glass (the 2nd of three such beers).

Poured a gorgeous sunny orange with a white foamy head. Aroma of wheat, orange and candy sugar. Flavor is similar - very lightly citrus, with a hint of bubblegum and clove along with wheat, yeast, and candy sugar. Creamy in the mouth but nice and dry in the finish, with a lingering kiss of sweetness. Very good, not overly complex.

A nice sipper and another enjoyable brew to share with family today.

The third of three beers with glasses my wife gave me still to come...

Damn impressed with this one!

The appearance is murky gold with a frothy foamy head. One thing I love about Belgians, or the ones I have run into, is that they give off great head. THis one leaves a thick lacing down the sides of the glass as well. Floaters everywhere, bottle conditioning is visible.

The smell is very faint, cloves and lemon grass with Belgian yeasts.

The taste is superb! Some type of clove and lemon grass in the taste. A very nice dryness with light Belgian yeasts. Very drinkable and very tasty. There are hints of other spices, just cannot pinpoint them out. Beautiful blend of dry spice and hints of lemon.

The mouthfeel is a bit over carbonated, but I could drink a few bottles of this! Drinkability is amazingly high, cannot get enough.

I was generally underwhelmed by this one, but its still a quality drink. It just doesn't live up to the hype that the Abt 12 Quad left me with.

As previous reviewers have noted, the color is significantly darker than other Tripels and the aroma more subdued. Head pours boisterously and full of large Belgian type bubbles. However, retention is brief and shorter than expected given the relative low ABV. Aroma throws up some Apricots, mild notes of yeast, some biscuit...just aromatically different in comparison to other Tripels. Taste is mostly dominated by the biscuit and reminds me more overall of a very bready and unhoppy amber ale. No notes of alcohol, dried fruit, or anything one has grown used to in Tripels.

I was a thrown a curveball and while this beer was more than just drinkable, it wasn't what I expected when I bought it.

11.2 oz bottle from Magnolia Foods in Lynchburg. $4 for a single.

Appearance: Opened at refrigerator temp and it was a minor gusher-- had my glass ready though, and didnt lose a drop. The gusher head was huge, but susided into normalcy leaving a smooth creamy white head for the remainder of the glass (excellent retention). Sheets of semi-sticky lace. The color is a just slightly hazy yellow-orange.

Smell: Very sweet, very fruity. Peaches, pears, and a few grapes thrown in. Banana too. Clove and yeast. Just a great smelling tripel.

Taste: I'm struck by how spicy and peppery this is. The bready yeast qualities are pretty dominant too. Much, much less fruity than the smell would suggest. Not at all bad, very good actually, but I wanted more from St B, particularly after smelling this thing. It finishes a little bitter, with some sharp ethanol flavor.

Mouthfeel: It feels like a trippel. Bubbly and sticky coating in the mouth. Could be bigger feeling.

Drinkability: Smellability is very high, but I really dont think I'll be going back for this again. Its a good beer, but not the best. Not cheap either. Maybe I was too harsh. I had high expectations I guess.

Pours hazy burnt orange with nice fluffy white head. Aroma of cloves, bananas and spice. First sip mirrors the aroma, great clean taste of fruits and spices, followed my a nice sugar sweetness. This is a great Tripel, will be even better on a warm summer day. Has a great smooth clean mouthfeel. This is an oustanding example of this style.

bought it at the local slga to my surprise would defiantly buy again if available reasonable price tag at $3.00 a bottle proper glass was not available so drank out of bottle head lasted long time in bottle drank it well chilled

11.2 oz. slender Belgian bottle with 30/01/09 on the back label; sampled November '08. Pours a gorgeous bright honey color with lots and lots of carbonation, capped with a bone-white fine-bubbled head that deposits loads of lacing on the glass. That's an easy five for appearance. The aroma takes a while to open up, but when it does there's a good dollop of orange, yeast and perhaps a touch of honey. Simple, but delicious. Similar on the palate - a little floral, a little fruity, with orange, spicy yeast, perhaps some honey, sweet and nutty malts, a faint breath of alcohol and a touch of spicy, mildly bitter hops. All of this on top of a lively, full and creamy, yet smooth body that has a lightly chalky yeast dryness. This is an amazing beer. So flavorful, yet delicate; complex and layered, but somehow simple. It's on the low end of the ABV scale for a tripel, but I like it that way because it is so damn drinkable that one small bottle is nowhere near enough to slake my thirst for this brew.

S: Banana, clove, and just the slightest spearmint. The sweet smell of cane sugar is mesmerizing. This, to me, is what a Tripel should smell like.

A: Deep straw to honey body with a very small head that gives way to a sparse cover and no lacing. The bottle has significant settling (not a concern).

T: Clove dominates with a sweet banana and plum flavor that is pleasant, not cloying. Alcohol is only barely detectable if held in the back of the mouth before swallowing. Delicious.

M: Medium to heavy body with low carbonation. Very smooth but somewhat bubbly (confusing considering what I see as low carbonation). Just a tiny bite on the tongue from initial carbonation.

D: While sweet, this brew remains very balanced and easy drinking. The 8.0 abv. may give some people pause, but I would not count myself among them.

O: Very solid beer, and worthy of the St. Bernardus name. This beer is a treat and an excellent benchmark to compare others against.

Now that I've slowly fallen in love with tripels I'm carefully starting to buy one each weekend.

A: Gigantic white head and a golden yellow color.

S: Cloves, peach, honey and candi sugar.

T: Malty, Clover honey, cloves and slightly fruity.

M: Medium carbonation and a medium body.

D: Like the other Bernardus beers this is a great one. Still not my favorite style but it's growing on me.

Poured a cloudy gold in goblet glass with great carbonation for a one-finger head that slowly dies and is a constant along with lace down the glass. A great orange/citric smell along with tartness and yeast and has hints of figs, berries and sweet malts. A medium-bodied beer that ranges from fluffy sweet and smooth to sharp and sour. Started crisp with a tart fruit taste, like sour orange, but passed smoothly and the sweet caramel malt picks it up and it goes down easy with a sweet backbite. Other flavors include berries and figs and hints of toffee. This is a great beer that I could have all day.

Pour a yellow body with an orange hue. Head is huge, as with most tripels, and frothy and looks to be bleached white. Nice looking black sediment sitting in the bottom. Aromas are subtle. Apricots, some malts, citrus, rum. Slightly sour, and some citrus flavours are present. Peaches, and sweet malts too. Good. Finish is smooth and creamy, alcohol not detectable. Would have liked stronger flavour and aromas. Still a good example.

From a bottle at Aufsturtz in Berlin, Germany into a St. Bernardus wine-glass style beer chalice.

The first bottle I got was a dud. No carbonation, no flavor. I sent it back, and they brought me a new one - no charge.

I had a lot of fun pouring this one. Like a good Duvel pour, a gentle and slow pour creates a thick, dense white head. The color is golden with a slight bit of green tint. The lights were dark, but I'm sure that would stand during the day.

Delicious smell! A bit of tart green apple, clove, and sugar cane notes without being one bit sweet. With the thick carbonation, this beer is easy to smell. And quite enjoyable, as well.

Taste is good - not quite up to par with the smell. Slightly sweeter than the nose would let on, but the flavors follow the smells, just in different proportions. Still wonderful to drink.

Mouthfeel is quite good - well balanced and enough tiny little bubbles to remind you this is a spectacular beer.

I had two over the course of 3 hours. I didn't feel the alcohol - but was staying well hydrated and had a nice dinner of Wiener Schnitzel with Roasted potatoes during the first glass. A repeat offender for me.

Bottle to glass. When I popped the top the suds immediately begin bubbling out (even though I was handling carefully). It was almostly completely foam in my glass (again, even after gentle pour). After settling down, it looked and smelled fine. Color of honey, but cloudy. Some juicy fruit and bubble yum on the nose. Taste had some cereal (cap'n crunch) flavors. Hops are there a bit but not much. Pretty tasty beer, would buy again.

33cl bottle, best before 08 Mar 10. Had this bottle for some time, my wife and I are staying at the brewery in two weeks time, so I've decided to open the one remaining St Bernardus I own before we travel. Very suprised to see I've never reviewed the tripel before.

Poured carefully into a Westmalle Chaice; no sediment in the pour, so a clear old gold body sits in my glass, on top a solid foam blanket of bubbles. Bubbles rise through the beer, it looks inviting. The head has the power, strenght and condition to stay complete throughout the tasting, very rare, even on the best tripels. The sediment was poured into a small wine tasting glass, it was taken after the review.

Dough aromas, with yeast, but this isn't any sort of bread in my hand. The sediment had a more vinegarous and potent smell.

A deep warm glow desends down your body as you sip the beer, this is good stuff. It feels a lot heavier than the 8%ABV it admits too, some real body in this master of tripels.

I am very lucky (various reasons) and have had many Belgian tripels, both on tap and bottled, this is without doubt one of the best.

I mentioned in the review I would be staying at the brewery, well the first beer I had from the fridge in the Brouwershuys was a Triple and it was poured for me by no less than Hans Depypere, the owner of the brewery. The fridge is free to use if you are staying at the lovely appointed and furnished B&B.

A- Vigorous pour into my St. Bernardus goblet. Good finger of head that seems to be dissipating quickly. Color is of murky dark yellow or light brown. A minute or two after the pour it settles to a light bubbly top that seem to have some staying power.

S- Very light scent on the nose. Ever so slight apricot smells with some yeasty notes. Thats all I got. Bare in mind I did drink a strong IPA before this. Addition: I decided to let this sit and warm up before I start drinking it and now the fruit smells are starting to come out much stronger then before. I am now getting some apple in addition to the apricot.

T- Nose is on the tongue. Apricot apple flavors with some light lemon notes.

M- Super bubbly! Tingle on the tongue is amazing. At 8% ABV, this goes down nice and easy.

D- Overall a nice beer. I don't drink many Tripel's and this one makes me want to change that and start drinking more!

Hazy dark golden pour into a La Fin du Monde tulip. Looks sort of like natural apple juice. Plenty of floaties in there too. White head subsides into a about a 1/8 inch collar on the top of the beer with some lacing.
Initial impressions of the aroma were focused on a not too pleasant blast of alcoholic solvents but after they subsided, I began to detect some more pleasant aromas of honey with only a bit of the alcoholic scents remaining.
Flavors are a mix of sweet malts with honeyed accents and a balancing but subtle bitterness from the hops. This is the sweetest, maltiest Tripel I've tried to date. The warmer it gets, the better and more complex it becomes.
Light mouthfeel with a nice amount of carbonation, a tiny bit of warmth from the alcohol on the back of the palate.
Impressively easy to drink, again the alcohol is barely perceptible.
My initial impression of this beer was that it is not as good as my two other benchmark tripels (La Fin du Monde and Westmalle). I still think that they are a bit better, but this gets better and better the farther I go down the glass. I will definitely be looking for this again.

A: Hazy gold with a large fluffy white head. Lots of carbonation. Got a little yeast suspended in the beer. Must have been jostled on the car ride.

S: A bready belgian yeast aroma. There are some floral notes and some sweet honey-like aromas. There is also an alcohol aroma.

T: A sweet malty flavor at first with a little bit of yeast funk. It is overcome by the alcohol flavor and warmth with some peppery, clove-like spice that linger with the alcohol into the finish.

M: Highly carbonated, provides a nice peppery spice feel to the beer.

D: A very good tripel....very tasty and well crafted.

Picked up a mixed St. Bernardus six pack (2 tripels, 2 dubbels, 1 quad and 1 wit)and this was the first I tried. Poured into a Chimay goblet.

Poured an orange copper, almost amber. The pour was viscous, with visible yeast floating around. The beer had a one finger head and nice lacing.

Sweet aroma, smelled of citrus fruits, traces of spices and yeast.

Very balanced taste and the alcohol was very masked for 8%. Beer had average carbonation and was very drinkable. This was the first St. Bernardus I have ever tried and I'm looking forward to tasting the rest.

A: Poured with a large, white frothy head that diminished to about 1/2-finger size. Body is a nice, dark-golden color that was cloudy, with heavy particles floating around. Good lacing on the sides of the glass.

S: Nice aroma, quite similar to the Watou Tripel, with lots of yeast, citrus, and some hints of alcohol.

T: Very nice flavor of breadiness, citrus, orange, and a light alcohol warmth in the finish. Average duration.

M: Medium-to-full bodied with a creamy texture, and average carbonation... not quite as fizzy as some of the other St. Bernardus beers.

D: A very, very good tripel... not the standout of its class, but definitely near the top, and very drinkable for its ABV.

This is one of the first times I drink the tripel beer of one of my favorite abbey breweries. Poured into my Westvleteren glass. The beer pours a hazy orange-yellow (almost amber) color, with a nice frothy head, leaving a somewhat messy lacing.

Smell: Fruity (peach, apricot, banana), spicy hops, yeast and some alcohol

Taste: Wow, this is a nice tripel. I taste orange, sour apple, soft sweet banana, malts, a clear spicy hops (coriander) and flowery hops. Maybe even some honey and caramel is present. This beer is well balanced, with perfect bitterness. The aftertaste is bitter-dry.

Mouthfeel: Nice and thick for the style. Medium carbonation

Overall: I have to say, that I don't really like triples. Until today....What a fantastic beer. I would like (and will) drink this one again and again!.

A: A highly lucent golden color with a frothy, bubbly white head that persists well and lays down some nice lace on the glass. The head isn't as rocky and massive as some of the other tripels I've sampled.

S: Rich, lush, and vibrant. Fruity and spicy in the nose, notes of bright golden apples, pears, white pepper, and clove. An extraordinarily complex and coherent aroma. Quite excellent.

T&M: Flavor is very nice. Bold fruit flavors of dry pear and apple start out, with dry pale maltiness coming in mid-palate. Alcoholic spiciness balances things out nicely late, giving way to a lightly drying finish. Well done. Medium to full body with a spritzy carbonation.

D: Very enjoyable tripel, an excellent brew. This one's quite fruity, whereas the Westmalle is a much spicier trappist tripel.
