This is the gold standard of witbiers. The taste is smooth and intense, balanced and pure perfection. Is it worth 3X the price of Blue Moon? Yes. WillI keep a stash for regular consumption? No, but then I am a dark beer fanatic and only drink witbier for refreshment. A must try to experience the potential of the style.

Aroma: Bread, sweet, citrus, spice, orange. Appearance: Pours pale, hazy straw while producing a 2” fively bubbled, persistent white mountain of foam that lasts though the finish leaving thick lace. Flavor: Balances light honey like sweetness with Granny Smith tartness with wheat, spice and citrus sandwiched in between. The spice is subtle and shows up more in the finish. Very faint banana. Mouthfeel: Very creamy, medium body and medium high carbonation. Overall Impression: One of the best wits out there.

Purchased from the LCBO in a 4 pack of 330 mL bottles. Served in a Hoegaarden glass.

A- A murky, non-translucent golden yellow. A very yeasty looking beer. Good strong wheaty head that leaves lots of lacing.

S- Like the appearance, very yeasty. Coriander and maybe a light hint of banana present.

T- Beautiful taste, one of the most smooth, yet complex of it's style. Coriander and yeast dominate the flavour, however, there is a light banana, floral and citrus taste present throughout the brew.

M- Very smooth. It starts off quite carbonated, however, the carbonation dissipated roughly halfway through the glass.

O- Incredible beer! Definitely my favourite of the style I have tried thus far (and this is probably my second favourite style next to, you guessed it, hefeweizen). Prior to drinking this beer, Blanche de Chambly was my favourite in this style, but this completely blew it out of the water. At its price, its more of a luxury beer rather than an everyday drink, but as a change of pace treat, you can't do much better. An amazing beer that is complex, but at the same time incredibly drinkable. Highly recommended!

My first review....I will do my best to follow the review protocol but please remember I am a newbie.

Appearance-Cloudy yellow color with lots of visible carbonation. A bit lighter in color compared to other wits.

Smell-Lemon with an under current of yeast.

Taste-Perfectly smooth and balanced. I find it to be more of a lemon taste vs. other wit's orange presence. There is barely a hint of hops which seems to be typical for most wits that I have tried. Love the taste of this one!

Mouthfeel-High level of carbonation which I enjoy. Lighter and smoother than the typical wit.

Drinkability-Easily the most drinkable beer I have ever had. I know this style is typically considered a summer beer but I could have one of these anytime or with any meal.

Comments- I am a big fan of witbiers and St. Bernardus has easily become my favorite. As a reference point, Allagash white ale used to be my wit of choice but I consider that to be a distant second now. This beer is pretty pricey, but I like it so much I find myself continuing to buy it despite the price premium.

Poured from 11.2 oz bottle into nonic pint.

Appearance: Opaque, pear juice color. 2" white head that settles to a filmy, tenacious finish. Very lacy clinging to the glass.

Smell: Fruity, more orange than lemon with a strong yeast presence.

Taste: Smooth and creamy applesauce with orange. No hop presence to be found. A perfect balance of sweet and sour.

Mouthfeel: Creamy with a small bite of carbonation. Really smooth.

Drinkability: Tart, but not sour. Sweet, but not syrupy. No lingering bitterness. I could easily guzzle down several of these before realizing it.

Comments: I'm trying to find something negative about this beer and can't (other than the price!) This has to be the pinnacle of witbiers. If this one doesn't get a perfect score, then perfection is not possible, since it can't be possible to improve this brew.

Appearance - A cottony-white head, honey/gold liquid. Slightly cloudy as expected.

Smell - Mild citrus, a bit of yeast, a bit of clove, some fruit.

Taste - Lemon, touch of coriander and orange, a bit of banana bread.

Mouthfeel - Smooth - carbonation is more evident if tasted soon after poured. Additional citrus finish.

Drinkability - Very easy to drink - it could be enjoyed at any occasion.

I'm finishing my 6th bottle and find myself planning to pick up another pack.

This is my favorite witbier - it is exactly the right balance of all flavors. Compared to other witbiers the flavor of St. Bernardus Wit is unique in that the flavors are much more complex and continue to bounce around the tongue before swallowing. There are many different delicious flavors that come and go and come back again while drinking this witbier. It is a very pleasant experience.

I've seen a few reviews by some who say it is flat when poured - my guess is it could have been a bad batch? The latest bottle I've poured happens to be the oldest, with a best by date of September '09 and it's August '09 now. Whatever the case may be I suppose i've been lucky for the last five bottles i've had because every one of them has been a real delight.

The flavor is negatively impacted if poured while below 40F. This beer is best enjoyed when the bottle is taken from the fridge and left on a countertop at room temperature for 15 minutes, and then poured into a room temperature glass. The coriander is more pronounced when poured too cool; the tartness is more pronounced when poured too warm.

There is no comparison between this witbier and a Hoegaarden - to me, Hoegaarden has two distinct flavors but the St. Bernardus Wit is a kaleidoscope. Highly recommended.

A - Poured a hazy straw yellow into a tulip glass. Head was about 1 finger but dissipated quickly.

S - Smells like your average witbier.... citrusy and wheaty. Very enticing, while at the same time reminding of lesser beers of its type.

T - Wow! Tart, lemon citrus, wheat, clove, and other spices come to mind. This is exactly what I want out of a beer. Simple, light, easy to drink, yet full of great flavor. This does not taste watered-down by any means. It's just a perfect balance. I imagine it goes well with most food.

M - Light, and refreshing, pleasant carbonation. Finishes smooth with nice carbonation, and just the subtlest hint of bitterness.

O - This is the best witbier I've had (I've had Hoegaarden, Alagash, Blance De Chamby, Hitachino.. etc), and this style is really one of the best, in my opinion. I think this beer is a bit underrated and deserves more attention on BA.

LOOK: Cloudy brew with a bright gold color. Bubbly, sparkling head formed and receded to just a fine covering. No real lace, a small amount of sediment. Looks the part and I included the yeast purposely.

SMELL: Yeasty and wheaty , but the yeast has so much character. Grape, raisin, musty basement and lemon are all very present in a strong aroma. This is perfect to style, and worthy of being Pierre Celis Signature Selection as the bottle proudly states.

TASTE: Juicy flavor of apple, tart grape, orange peel, bit of funk. Tart to the sour glands, but with a depth of dusty malt character. Funk, coriander, and malts adding a balancing sweetness. Very faint herbal and grassy hoppy bitterness. Has a vague, almost smoked flavor, closer to well done toast. Clove and peppercorn emerge later in the flavor profile.

FEEL: Medium to full bodied, with a sour tang. The finish is appetizingly dry and crisp. Champagne like carbonation. A perfect feel on a Belgian classic. It just does not get better than this feel.

OVERALL: Worthy of being named "Best Witbier in the World". Easily the best example of the style I have encountered. The complexity from the yeast alone was great, but the rest of the flavors were also great. Exactly what a Belgian White should be. Seek this out if you enjoy Wheats, Sours, or Belgian Ales. Absolutely phenomenal wit.

I got this beer hoping that it would stay true to Brouwerij St. Bernard's good name. It sure mutha fuckin did.

A - murky dulled yellow (almost looks like fitered vomit, but in a good way). Thin white head that lasted with it pretty much the whole way down.

S - definate fruit. lemon, orange. very nice aromatics. i wish they would turn it into a cologne.

T - initial taste was lemon, coriander. followed by orange, wheat.

MF - very smoothe. rolls back easy peasy. definately a great session beer (even though I hate the word "session" for some reason) so a great chug beer.

D - very drinkable hence it is a liquid. but seriously, it would go great with any light meal like fish, chicken, squirrel, whatever....

all in all, this is for sure a tastey burger. I would easily buy this again.

Arrived in a pint glass with about a 1 finger head. The appearance is classic witbier...I found the color to be a hazy yellow and almost a little orange, but that could have been the light in the restaurant.

The smell was distinct: lemon, orange and yeast

I have yet to find a beer that tastes or feels better. It is very smooth to drink, full-bodied, full-flavored, heavy and creamy, yet I also found it somewhat sweet. The aroma really came through on my palate.

I ordered it with pizza one night and really wanted to savor it, bit it is so smooth and refreshing that I finished long before the pizza and had to order a second. This is one of the best beers that I have had and order it or buy it when possible.

Tasted on 09/28/11. From notes:

A: Cloudy, golden yellow with a small white head that fades quickly, leaving a little lacing.

S: Lots of crisp wheat. Very spicy. A bit of citrus (lemon rind/zest). Some very slight herbal (hop?) notes.

T: A little bitter and grassy to start. Turns into a wave of fluffy, sweet wheat. Very floral as well. Finishes a little malty.

M: Light, but smooth and very flavorful. Very refreshing. Carbonation is spot-on.

O: Delicious, and by far the best witbier I've ever had!

This beauty poured into my mug with a fantastic foamy head. Lovely yeast floating down through the beer. tons of yeasty aromas, some bitter citrus, hay, floral scents. The flavors pop in the mouth. orange, yeasts, coriander, lemons, grassy notes. Thick delicious mouthfeel. wow. This is the best witbier Ive had to date, glad I have another to enjoy soon!

Small 33cl brown Euro bottle. Silver label with the same smiling St. Bernardus monk depicted.
Cloudy pale yellow body, with large fluffy white head. Rocky and bubbly, laced the glass and covered the beer in clumps to the bottom. Bottle swirl produced a darker biege yeasty sediment, good stuff.
Refreshing aromos of lots of spices, coriander, citrus, lemons, and ground orange peels. A striking and alerting aroma.
Taste is everybit as refreshing. Lots of citrus flavors, cloves, hot spicy coriander finish. Orange peel flavors and hot spicy flash at the finish then fade off to a super crisp dry finish. Very bubbly and light on the tongue. Highly carbonated and medium bodied. Easy going down and a very refreshing Belgian Wit. Look for this one and give it a try this summer, you won't be dissapointed.

Poured from a single 33cl bottle with freshness dating.

Appearance: a pale yellow liquid which is translucent, a small half inch head rapidly faded to lace around the glass.

Smell: Outstanding aroma here, lots of citrus and corriander notes. Fresh!

Taste: A well balanced citrus flavor along with a bready taste from the wheat. The spices round this one out to make each sip an outstandingly consistent witbier.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied with a good deal of carbonation.

Drinkability: an awesome beer that can be drank in session especially due to it's moderate ABV.

Overall: this is my favorite witbier, beating out Hoegaarden and Allagash White.

12 oz bottle, poured into a tulip at approximately 40 degrees F.

Appearance: Pours a very cloudy pale straw gold, and forms a two-finger white head that dies quickly to about half a finger, then lingers for a bit. Occasional decent-sized bubbles of carbonation can be seen rising from the bottom of the glass. While there is lacing at first, it eventually dies to small patches as the head evaporates to a broken ring.

Smell: Sour citrus mingles with an interesting sort of musty funk as the aroma wafts out of the glass. There are some faint hints of green grape and pear in the scent, a touch of spice, and something vaguely like mildewed bubblegum.

Taste: Tart citrus opens the flavor profile in a rush of orange and lemon, shot through with various spices - some clove and coriander, a touch of pepper. As it moves along the palate, notes of pear and banana appear, though beneath the citrus. The finish leaves behind the citrus flavors, with a sour and mildly funky edge to them, akin to if a sample of mold from bleu cheese were never introduced to any cheese, but made to grow on the oranges and lemons instead.

Mouthfeel: Light and drinkable, with significant sparkly, sharp carbonation.

Overall: That's a darned good witbier, verging into sour territory just a touch while retaining the complexities of phenols and esters one would want in a wit. If I could find this for under $5 a bottle, I'd make it a regular in my fridge. Even at that price, for the way this approaches the realm of a sour beer, it'll make repeat appearances.

Appearance: Golden orange cloudy hue with a pleasant off white creamy textured foamy head leaves behind thick evenly strung patches of lacing. Aroma: Sweet spicy notes flow through the air, swirling sharp malted wheat sweetness with peppery spice, coriander, cloves, and some juicy fruit tones not overly citrus but nice tones. Taste: Creamy uniform flavor with a bready sweentess, clove and spice finish with a touch of citrus and pear juice like tones, awesome. Mouthfeel: Light bodied very creamy texture, perfect carbonation levels. Drinkability: Amazingly good the best witbier I have tasted hands down, I fell in love could buy a case if the price was right.

Poured from a 750ml corked and caged bottle into a pint glass. No dating info on the bottle but they had just got this batch in at the liquor store so should be good. It was a nice hazy pale yellow with lots of carb streams. It had a 2+ finger white head that whittled down to a thick collar and constant thin foam cap. Really good sheeting that quickly slides back into the glass. A little sticking. Was shocked to discover that I hadn't reviewed this one yet. Not sure how that happened as this is one of my favorites and I have often.

The aroma was excellent with pepper and clove for the spice side balancing with the citrus aroma and wheat malt. Really good sniffer. The taste is also excellent. Starts with the clove and pepper bite that fades as the citrus and malt flavors take over for a nice, smooth finish. Mouthfeel was medium with lots of carbonation.

Overall, an exceptional wit and one of the best (maybe the best) wits out there. Most highly recommend. Home keg worthy! Available here in TX. Rotation - heavy player in the wit/hefe/... rotation. [H;Y]

Pours an unhazy pale gold with a modest head that dissipates quickly leaving a small cap of foam. Clearest wit yet.

Yeast and citrus aroma. Nothing notable to elevate it's status over other wits.

Malt, hops, and citrus flavors combine to make this another spectacular wit. Fresher and cleaner than any wit I've reviewed to date.

Mouthfeel is quite good. Refreshing and clean with modest carbonation.

Again a most drinkable wit. Just a notch above my previous favorite - Allagash.

This brew pours a cloudy pale yellowish-white color. The head is oh good size, and quickly recedes into a cap of lacing a centimeter thick. The aroma is very apparent. Lemons, oranges, corriander and more lemons invade the nose. Everything in the aroma is present in the taste with the addition of a refreshing tanginess. The mouthfeel is on the lighter side omedium bodied with lively carbonations and a smoothness that I don't recall finding in a witbier before. Overall, I consider this to be the best witbier on the market. If only it weren't so darn expensive.

An amazing brew from a great brewery. This is possibly their best brew in a style not generally regarded for great brews. Aroma is powerfully lemoney and yeasty, reminiscent of a lemon yogurt. Cloudy straw yellow with a fair birt of head that recedes to nothin a bit too quick for my liking. Fruity and light with a slightly tart finish. Mouthfeel is medium, but crisply carbonated and not at all heavy. Quite a bit more interesting than several of the Wits I've tried recently. Shame its so damned expensive.

Look - It had a nice cloudiness. It was a deep yellow color, with a solid 1 finger head that lasts.

Smell - There was lots of wheat on the noes. There was also some great lemon, citrus and orange peel.

Taste - There were bananas and clove. It has a great wheat backbone that you get from beginning to end. It has a really solid taste with a little sweetness, and some honey.

Feel - It was very light. It was also very smooth, and dissipates off the tongue. The light effervescence is very nice as well.

Drinkability - It was very drinkable. I liked this one a lot and St. Bernardus has never let me down. It is almost sessionable and would be willing to try to do just that.

Picked up this Wit in the 750ml corked bottle. I slowly poured this into a beer glass. Lots of head. Even with the slow pour, still wound up with 40% head. I set the bottle down and head was still comming out the bottle slowly in a 2 inch thick tower! Upon initial smell, it was very yeasty and sour with slight hints of lemon, orange and corriander. The flavor was outstanding. Wit and Hefewiesen are my favorite types of beer and this one is an award winner. It might have been my imagination but in tasting I got a hint of the minerals from the artisian water they use. The main taste is crisp lemony wit. I finished the bottle in no time. I now must try all the other offerings from St Bernardus!

This is a beautiful and almost perfect example of a Wit. Poured into my Tulip glass. Has a very sizeable 3 finger head that lingers for awhile. Smell is of citrus and light corriander possibly. Taste is where this beerso shines! Wonderful, light and perfect in every way. Slight citrus notes finish perfectly crisp and so drinkable. This is a session beer for sure. It just doesn't get much better for this style of beer! UNREAL!!!

Poured from a 330ml bottle into a Gulden Draak tulip glass.

A massive white, foaming head appears as you pour, and then thretens not to leave without some coaxing. Leaves a few mm of head for the rest of the drink and laces the glass.

The smell is summer for me, slightly earthy, but overriding freshness, like a field on a breezy summers day, with the wheat, some floweriness, and citrus tones coming through.

The taste starts of with these fresh tones, a wheaty, yeasty taste which is light and refreshing, then following that some mild spices and citrus flavours can be found, almost warming you up with the alcohol taste infused.

Overall an immense drink, I might go right now and order a whole crate of the stuff!
