St.Bernardus Tokyo Sounds familiar? You are quite right, because in 2012 we launched a one-off brew on the occasion of the opening of the first St.Bernardus-themed café in the Japanese capital. Eight years later, you can sample our St.Bernardus Tokyo again, albeit with a new recipe!

The young Belgian illustrator Jonas Devacht created the artwork for the can, which consists of an impression of Japanese nightlife in the iconic streets of Kanda district, where you can find ‘Brasserie St.Bernardus’.

St.Bernardus Tokyo is an unfiltered ale, which has been brewed with a large amount of wheat, holding the middle between a white beer and a saison. St.Bernardus Tokyo is an unfiltered, golden ale, topped off with an impressive white collar.

St Bernardus Watou Tokyo, 6% abv, poured at around 5 degrees celcius in a long tulip glass. NIce white creamy head, about 2-3 fingers, dissolving in medium pace. Cloudy yellow colour, delicate carbonation.
Smell Honey, flowers a little bit of chlore,
Taste, roses, jasmine, honey, and some musk. Almost like drinking a lovely perfume.
What an amazing beer to get such flavours out of the normal beer ingredients without infusion.
Is it without infusion?
Hardly can believe. I guess this beer is infused, how ever very well made.
Second can of this beer? Mwhoah, the overperfumed taste starts to be annoying. Drink and enjoy one. Not a beer to party on the whole night.

Btw, please not, there seems to be a 5% St Bernardus white out there that has the orange-banana taste and a more amber appearance.
I got astray at first as well.

L2080 date code on the bottom - guessing this was packaged towards the end of March 2020? Poured from a 12oz can into my Hoegaarden tumbler. Same color and IBU as their regular WIt, but with a bit more gravity and presumably a different yeast (as this is described as a white beer/saison).

Cloudy jasmine/naples yellow body topped by a fat fluffy finger of ivory suds. Soft dense lacing; excellent retention.

Tangerine, lemon, and a hint of funk (washed rind cheese; gym socks) in the nose. Yeast driven, but with wheat clearly present. A touch of phenols/white peppercorn emerges as the ale warms.

Lightly sweet/crackery cereal character (hints of communion wafer, vanilla, and plantain) followed by some citrus, almost-lactic tartness, and a subtle barnyard element. Finishes fairly clean and moderately dry. Gentle bitterness throughout. Spiciness and complexity grows as the ale warms.

Creamy, soft, yet light bodied and refreshing. ABV well concealed. Very "drinkable."

Superbly balanced, this successful blend of related styles would pair well with izakaya fare, but is satisfying on its own as well.

I had this on draft 6/26/23 @ the Hopleaf.

Mostly opaque orange appearance.

Nice off-white head; strong, frothy lacing remained.

Banana, orange peel & faint clove notes in the nose.

Creamy medium mouthfeel.

Cream, banana & mild orange peel flavors up front; mild clove notes on the finish.

Creamy & tasty.

Pours a slightly hazy amber with lacing and foam along the St. Bernardus globe. Refreshing light body with creamy carbonation. Aromatic with the Belgian yeasty pear scent and a touch of clove. Taste is slightly lemony but minus the usual Witbier spice. This is a very interesting style of beer that I hope others witll explore. It has a lot of Belgian character without the flavorings. After some sipping it does taste more like a Tripel with that spicy and estery flavor, but lighter. From the 11.2 oz can.
