Decent place that has some good potential. I love the atmosphere - classic long oak bar, very nice dark pub feel inside, no TVs, kind of reminds me of a North Woods hunting lodge or ski chalet. The side rooms have a muted artsy feel that I like. One of my favorite bars in terms of atmosphere and one of the few bars that I can cozy up to by myself.

The selection is good, not extremely impressive, but solid, with lots of local and regional beers from Harriet, Fulton, Bells, Founders, Surly, Tyranena, Central Waters, etc., and several from other parts of the country like Stone, Alaskan, and a few Belgians. Nothing out of ordinary, mostly standard offerings, but a nice wide variety. The beers are served fresh and in clean glassware. No complaints there.

Their main weakness is that the service ranges from average to bad. On a normal day, they serve at a medium slow pace, even if business is sparse. I just always feel like I'm waiting longer than I need for everything. I also had one of my personal worst bar service experiences of my life at the Surly Five release party. Several bartenders were behind the bar moving about as slow as you can imagine while the place was packed and hopping. Patrons were annoyed, obviously, as it took forever to get a drink, but no one was being obnoxious or anything like that. Bartenders started being rude to customers and muttering nasty comments under their breath. You never EVER do this to your customers. The rudest, most obnoxious customer needs to be treated with respect and class, even if they are being kicked out.

The food is pretty good pub fare with reasonable prices. The fish and chips was delicious and the buttermilk fried chicken wings were good as well.

Overall, the place is pretty good and has the potential to become one of the premier beer establishments in the Twin Cities. (1,849 characters)

An excellent craft beer destination with interesting and varied gastropub food offerings.
Long bar with a multitude of tap handles. Very nice wood and brick interior with lots of beautiful stained glass panels. Outstanding variety of beers and ciders, with many world class (e.g., St. Bernardus ABT 12; Triple Karmeliet; La Trappe Quad) and limited beers on tap. A fairly up to date lists of taps is available on their website. Flights available. (449 characters)

Would definitely come back again. Tons on beer on tap and a hefty variety. Food menu is unique and compliments the drink selections. (132 characters)

We had the pleasure of visiting Republic while we were in town interviewing for residency positions at the University of Minnesota. This place happened to be across the street from our hotel, and after some quick research, we discovered it was recently labelled as one of the “Top 100 Beer Bars in America”!! We, of course, had to experience it.

Again, located immediately across the street from our accommodations, we were able to easily access it via a brief walk. Parking garages were close, and easily accessible as well, but were not free. You came through the front door into an open space, met first by the long bar on your right that stretches the length of the pub, and six to eight high-top tables lining the wall to your left. The bar, which seated 20-30 people, was loaded with 100+ taps, flanking either side of the bartender’s space, and included ciders and meads in addition to a vast, and well-planned, selection of craft beer. Wine and liquor were also available, and tended to be local offerings. The beer menu was organized by style, and contained many local beers in addition to classics from around the world. We were particularly excited to see their “Minnesota IPA” section of the menu, which helped shape our night, for certain. We ended up ordering four beers to sample, splitting them all. Two were off this local IPA list, while the others were Minnesotan stouts, from across their great state. It wasn’t until our first bathroom break that we discovered the true size of Republic. Walking to the end of the bar revealed an expansive seating area, including another ten to fifteen high top tables, and a larger traditional dining area split into another two longitudinal sections.

The whole establishment held onto a darker "English pub" vibe, and was decorated with glowing red candles and beautiful low-hanging stained glass lights. Specials for appetizers, beers, and the daily cheese were written on large chalk boards posted around the bar. Wrapping around the topside of the bar, amidst an ornately carved wooden ceiling and crown moulding, where inlaid stained glass windows that allowed the lazy afternoon sun to brighten the space with a bit of color. There were no televisions and, at least at 4 o'clock on this Saturday afternoon, it seemed like a quiet place to catch up with friends.

We arrived just before happy hour began. Happy hour was from 4-6pm and 10-12pm, seven days a week. We actually thought it was really cool that they did this twice a day, allowing you some late-night deals for some nightcaps or fourth meal. It boasted discounts on every beer, and special prices on several food items, so what’s not to love?! We ordered cauliflower-feta fritters, homemade chips and guacamole, the daily cheese board, and mock duck tacos. As 50% of our party ate vegetarian, the selection of meat-free items was highly appreciated. Everything was delicious and was brought to us seemingly within five to ten minutes of the order by a very friendly and beer-savvy staff. Dishes were well portioned, although we did need a few more slices of baguette to aid us in eliminating the cheese. We happily ate, and the bar area and restaurant rapidly started to fill around us as the night wore on. We decided to get a last-minute train to the Minnesota Wild hockey game, but otherwise would have stayed perched at our corner of the bar all night long. We even tried to get back from the game in time for another pint and some mock duck tacos to-go, but were sadly disappointed when we arrived past the kitchen’s closing.

Overall, Republic was a great place to go. The décor was unique and comfortable, and the restaurant was clean and well kept, all wrapped in an inviting, warming, and friendly atmosphere. Should we end up matching here in Minneapolis, this place will most surely become a standard. (3,880 characters)

One of the best beer selections anywhere - over 88 beers on tap and a dozen ciders. The food is bar food - burgers, appetizers, salads, sandwiches, sausages and so forth and it is decent. (187 characters)

Republic has a fair number of taps and passable food. But having 50+ taps is no guarantee that the selection is interesting, and that is one area I found disappointing. I can think of a few others nearby with fewer taps by half, but better lists.

More troubling to me is their absolute refusal to list serving sizes on the menu. I deserve to know what I am ordering, and Republic would rather force me to ask my not-entirely-certain server about each one than allow me to read the information on the menu. It is exactly equivalent to not printing the price on the menu. I would give less than 1 for service if that were possible. (630 characters)

Huge selection of taps with a handful of rotating/seasonal brews. Happy hour is great, the staff is friendly, and the atmosphere is the opposite of divey (a plus for me). (170 characters)
