A Sunday Sojourn to Murrays at Manly... this would be interesting....
I'll review again when fully open, but as to now...
I imagined a one-shop front restaurant style, however, I guess that would not be Murray, eh? Instead, it is a larger, and I mean wider venue, on the first floor, set back from the pavement with balcony views overlooking the beach. That'd be a 5/5 then for starters, on a sunny day.
Difficult to really either mark for vibe, or relate to how vibe would fit. It's not really a bar, and it's not wholly a restaurant... I doubt it will 'come alive' at night, but it is in a fantastic beach-side location, ideally set for weekend casual passing. I just sat and had a blissful time.
The beers? well, lucky for us, we were in a couple of days after the Winter Feast, and they had some remainder on tap, so we got to sample some superb dark beers. All served too cold, tho a tap upgrade is on it's way, allowing variable temps. Punch and Judy was a stand-out on the hand-pump. mrs heygeebee enjoyed the ICON 2IPA, a treat on tap. No growler fills or takeaway just yet - it's coming
The food was excellent. Small menu but good. Ok prices along Manly seafront, as well. Even served on warmed plates, well done. Another very clever idea, are the bar snacks that do go well with beer. They aren't too expensive, but a few of them will put a hole in your pocket because they are GOOD and you will want more. Clever. The bowl of nuts goes so well with ales it's unfunny. Could do with a kids menu, tho....
We arrived at 12 and were first in. No tables left by the time we baled around 3:30 or so. Full of people snacking and drinking - many many young families and strollers.
The staff who were on were indeed knowledgeable. And freindly and professional. Where does Murray find beer-people of that calibre? Must be industry insiders, rather than Manly locals. Hope they stay...
So - its half open at present... watch this space...

Murray's is a really nice brew pub venue right on the edge of Manly beach serving Murray's craft beer and restaurant dining food menu.
Having been to this venue twice I would say that there has been an obvious change in management or tact recently.
There is a new menu which, while fantastic, doesn't give you a whole lot of options compared to the previous menu.
Also, on the night we went there was only one person working the bar on a busy night, so getting a drink took up to 10 minutes.
Having said this, it's really REALLY difficult to say anything negative about Murray's, it's a beautiful venue with a great vibe and the beer is A+.
While I'm not a fan of every single beer they make, they have a really great portfolio of solid beers that will impress any craft brew fan or beer lover.
I can't recommend Murray's enough if you're looking to make the trip to Manly for a great meal & beer with a lovely view.
- Excellent setting
- Large portfolio of beer all of a high standard
- Really nice food
- Staff are friendly and attentive (when you have their attention)
- Bar staff have good knowledge of what they're serving (* except for Imperial IPA vs Double IPA)
- Wait and bar staff took a long time to serve us consistently, appeared to be understaffed particularly at the bar
Beer Geek Pros:
- Amazing selection of geeky styles, set of fun play cards to choose which beer you want to have
Beer Geek Cons:
- * When I asked for their second double IPA the bartender told me they only had one double IPA, they advertise a 2IPA and Imperial IPA, which are the same thing, no big deal :)
There is nothing like sitting on the deck and having a wonderful craft brew while the sun sets over the water.
Can't recommend it enough, make sure you get a look in, an absolute must for beer geeks.

Second visit to Murrays at Manly, the first being on opening night.
The venue is flash looking, but poorly signposted, so easy to walk on by and it seemed like that's what people in Manly were doing. Set away from the road, opposite Manly Beach. Beautiful view, but being set away from the road, means that people walking by looking for a place don't want to take the risk of walking all the way up to the place to see if that's what they are after. As a result, albeit in the middle of winter (though on a beautiful day), there were just 30 or so patrons over the course of 3 hours. Atmosphere is below par, just because of a big venue with few patrons to give it any sort of atmosphere. Hopefully this would change.
Beer quality is generally good. Currently no takeaways or growlers. However, i was informed that once renovations are complete, that this would change around September. Had Punch & Judy ale from the handpumo, which was quite good. Drank Pilsner too which didn't taste fresh. Finished with the newly released Best Extra Porter which was quite good once it opened up.
Service was good, had a bubbly young lady who was passionate and knowledgeable about what was on tap and in bottle and informed us about the proposed changes in the near future.
Currently the selection of beer is limited to their own stuff. This is apparently set to change, likewise the number of taps is supposed to increase. Good range of styles brewed for both low alcohol and strong ABV ales. Wine list didn't seem all that enticing.
Didn't have food so cannot comment.
Prices were $5 for 300 or so mls of Punch & Judy. $10 for the same size of the circa 8.0% ABV Best Extra Porter. Bottles were a bit more expensive, some hitting $12 for 330ml for the bigger beers.
Overall, i hope the business picks up, particularly after renovations are complete. Some good beer being served, just lacking the patrons to consume it and make the place seem enticing to stay there.
