Velvety brown in the Brugs chalice with a fine-grained foam. Aromas of roasted grain and cocoa. Slightly sweet with a hot alcohol candy nose.

Taste is seriously chocolatey with a strong dose of espresso. This is quite a mouthful. Winey mouthfeel along with plenty of carbonation. Rich and bordering on unctuous, but sharp at the same time. Major hop bitterness emerges later on.

The intense back-or-the-throat sensation gets to be a bit much. This is intriguing and worth a try, but I'll take the small glass. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Best Damn Beer Shop in San Diego.

650ml bottle, received some time over the summer in 2013, one that got lost in the back of the cellar. Poured into an El Segundo tumbler.

The beer pours a deep jet black color, hues of cola brown when hit by the light with a thick, but short caramel colored head that has moderate retention and leaves quite a few spots of soapy lace behind. The aroma is roasty, chocolatey and a little chalky, lots of burnt coffee and cocoa with strong toasted malt, quite bitter and a bit abrasive. The flavors are very burnt, lots of overly roasted coffee, burned chocolate and toasted grain, very bitter for the style, a touch of stone fruit provides some sweetness but does little to counteract the burnt qualities of this beer. It's not too smokey, but it does have some smokiness and ashiness to it as well. The mouthfeel is nice, carbonation is a bit livelier than anticipated, but its very smooth, silky and soft. Coats the mouth nicely and delivers an easy finish that is quite smooth and a bit creamy.

Verdict: Too burned, too roasty and too bitter. It's the first true let down from El Segundo I've experienced and I still look to them as one of the finer breweries in the LA area, but this one is just a miss. Almost nothing redeeming about this brew to speak of, aside from the mouthfeel, definitely one to skip with the plethora of fantastic stouts sitting next to it on the shelf.
