On tap at El Segundo Brewing Company in El Segundo, CA.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to an oily film on top of the beer. A foamy latticework of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, and vanilla beans. Taste is much the same with a chocolate syrup flavor on the finish. There is a mild amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with some very nice vanilla and cocoa aromas and flavors.

At 7.8% alcohol and flavored with vanilla, this beer looks like a great candidate as a liquid dessert. But first, I must sample it to show if it's worthy of such. There's 22 ounces in the bottle, so on to the beer:

How about that ttwo- finger's thick head which retains very well? Like it, don't you? Below, you can try to shine a light through the body, but it won't be seen on the other side, as it is motor oil black. The aroma makes me think more of coffee adfter dinner than dessrt with its assertive roastiness. Slightly sweet as well, like milk sweet. I can't find the vanilla yet, but I'm hopeful that I will taste it.

Ok, now I can taste vanilla. Now it's starting to taste like dessert. it starts off with a pleasant bitter roast before a wave of vanilla beans hits you. A slight taste of alcohol is noticed, with a warm and bittering aspect. With its alcohol at a relatviely high mark, the beer is medium-full bodied with low carbonation, yet possess some degree of drinkability. Finishes with a sweet and stouty aftertaste.

I'd like to solve the puzzle; dessert served in a big glass.

Black with a brown head.

Certainly smells vanilla, then roasted malt.

Not a lot going on, very standard stout and not terribly rich. I hate to say the vanilla might be dialing this one back. Very simple with a base that's closer to chocolate than coffee. Nothing off putting, no astringency, little bitter, not staining. Could do with a punch up of something other than vanilla.

Light carbonation makes for thick and frothy.

Served in a tasting glass at Ale Arsenal.

A: Opaque black. Light head fades. Imposing.

S: Coffee. Roasted barley, with a hint of thinness (or metal?) a la Guinness. Only a whiff of vanilla, which might easily be mistaken for chocolate.

T/M: Better colder. It'd be a nice porter, but hardly a hardy stout. Deep roast. Lingering bittersweet endtaste is the only indication of the alleged vanilla, but it's nice. Very moreish. I keep wanting to drink more.

O: A good, sweetish stout. Some chocolate, roast, vanilla. A lot going on, and little is unpleasant. Would have again.
