On tap at the Promenade Beer & Wine Festival held in Downtown Long Beach in Long Beach, CA.

Pours a hazy gold with a foamy beige head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, and citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with citrus zest flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is tasty but has a slightly better hop aroma in my opinion.

Hazy gold body on the pour, the stark white head builds quickly to three fingers. However the retention is rather poor leaving behind some scattered thin lacing.

Floral aroma, quite bright with citrus zest hop oils and a powdery note that makes me think Orange Tang. Quite a toasty and white bread malt aroma that does well to stay out of the way.

Hops are bright and explode on the tongue before the malt has a chance to catch up, buttered biscuits with some unexpected, cake batter, vanilla or marshmallow fluff sweetness. Lemon verbena, oily pine and white grapefruit, super bright hop profile with a moderate to high bitterness. Aftertaste really bangs on the citrus pith with just a bit of black lemon tea.

Medium body but the carbonation sits too low despite the brightness of the hops, this really could pop more though it does compliment the vanilla and smooth sweetness of the malt. The citrus pith aftertaste accentuates the bitterness leaving a good drying quality.

This IPA almost seems oak aged, there is a really unique but subtle malt sweet flavors. Paired with the bright citrus and oily herbaceous hops it is very good. Bitterness will definitely be too much for some and while I prefer more carbonation the mouthfeel is very smooth.

Poured from the bottle into a Spiegelau IPA glass. Bottled May 22 / 2014.

Deep brass yellow, with a nice apricot orange body, with some slight cloudy character. Head is a creamy off white and three fingers tall with some retention. Settles with little lacing and a one finger somewhat thick puck.

Good hint of malt toast quality, and some citrus orange fruit hop character. Some mild floral sense but hop angle is a bit small and subtle. Still quite good.

Juiced body mouthfeel a little, with a solid bit of sugared sweetness. Fruit angle comes out a little candied with some mild hop bitterness on the finish. A good sense of zest and oils as well, with a decent palate coating. A good baked bread and citrus mix balance in the palate between malt and hop.

Overall just a pretty solid IPA.

22oz bottle dated 04/03/14 (fairly fresh) $7.99 at Healthy Spirits (Castro). Bright orange, foamy head. Aroma is hops with a hint of butter? Flavor is pretty bitter covering up a bit of citrus but unable to hide a buttery flavor that surely must be diacetyl right? I am no brewer so I don;t know but I do know what butter tastes like. Take away the butter flavor and this would be a nice hoppy IPA.
